Yes. You can connect a PC directly to a modem with an Ethernet cable if both devices have compatible Ethernet ports and the modem and internet service are ready to provide a connection. It is also a useful way to check whether a separate Wi-Fi router is causing a connection problem. For everyday use, though, a direct connection may not provide the Wi-Fi, multi-device networking, or filtering features of a router.
How to connect your PC directly to a modem
- Check the equipment. Confirm that the modem is powered, has an Ethernet or LAN port, and is online according to its indicators or manual. Check that your PC has an Ethernet port; if it does not, you will need a compatible Ethernet adapter.
- Connect the cable. Plug one end of an Ethernet cable into the modem’s Ethernet port and the other into the PC’s Ethernet port or adapter.
- Wait for network settings. In most setups, leave the PC configured to obtain network settings automatically. Follow your ISP’s or device maker’s instructions instead if they specify different settings.
- Check for internet access. If the PC does not connect, check the modem’s status and whether the ISP requires activation or equipment registration.
A direct connection is not guaranteed to work with every modem and ISP. The device may need to be activated or provisioned, and its instructions may specify how a computer should connect.
What a successful direct connection can tell you
Microsoft recommends connecting a PC to the modem with Ethernet as a troubleshooting check for Wi-Fi problems. If the PC gets online directly but not through the router, the result points to the router or its Wi-Fi connection as the likely source of the problem. Check the router’s cabling, settings, and firmware.
If the direct test also fails, that result alone does not establish whether the problem is the modem, the ISP service, activation, or the cable. Check the service status and equipment instructions, then contact your ISP if needed. See Microsoft’s Windows Wi-Fi troubleshooting steps.

Modem, gateway, and router: what changes?
“Modem” is sometimes used casually for equipment that also includes a router. A standalone modem and a modem/router gateway are not interchangeable in their features or connection options. Do not assume your device has Wi-Fi, several usable Ethernet ports, or router functions; check its label, model documentation, and ISP requirements.
| Setup | What it can provide | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| PC connected directly to a modem | A wired connection for the connected PC, if the modem and ISP support it. Wi-Fi and router functions are not assured. | Checking whether a separate router or Wi-Fi connection is involved, or connecting one PC when the equipment and service allow it. |
| Modem/router gateway | Modem and router functions in one device; available ports and features depend on the model. | When the gateway supports the ISP service and offers the connections and network features you need. |
| Standalone modem plus separate router | The modem provides the internet connection to the router, which supplies routing and may provide Wi-Fi and wired connections. | When you need router functions or network access for multiple devices and have compatible equipment. |
NETGEAR’s network-design guidance distinguishes a single modem connection from a modem-and-router setup for a network. Some of its cable gateways can also be set to modem-only mode, but that guidance is model-specific; it should not be assumed to apply to other devices. See NETGEAR’s internet connection designs and its instructions for setting certain NETGEAR cable gateways to modem-only mode.

Security when the PC bypasses a router
A separate router often provides hardware firewall and routing functions. Microsoft describes a router that brings internet service into a home or office as “usually a hardware firewall”; the PC may also have a software firewall. Connecting directly to a standalone modem can bypass the separate router, so do not assume its filtering or local-network features remain in the connection path. The exact exposure depends on the modem, ISP, IP configuration, and PC firewall.
- Keep the PC’s firewall enabled and avoid enabling unsolicited inbound access unless you understand why it is needed.
- On Windows, use the Public network profile for a less-trusted network when appropriate; Microsoft says it applies stricter controls than the Private profile.
- Be cautious with file sharing and other services that accept connections from other devices.
Microsoft explains how hardware and software firewalls work and describes Windows Firewall and Public and Private network profiles. Its wireless network setup guidance also covers the modem, router, and Windows firewall context.

If the direct connection does not work
- Check power and online status: use the modem’s indicators and manual to confirm it is operating and connected to service.
- Check the physical connection: make sure both ends of the cable are seated and that you are using an Ethernet or LAN port, not a different connector.
- Check activation: if the modem is new or was recently moved, ask the ISP whether it needs activation or equipment registration. NETGEAR’s instructions for listed cable modem/router models, for example, include ISP activation steps and may require account or device information: NETGEAR cable modem/router setup.
- Compare with the router connection: if the PC connects directly but not through the router, investigate the router and its connections. If neither connection works, check for an ISP service issue or consult the modem’s model-specific instructions.
A failed direct test is only one troubleshooting result; it does not diagnose every possible cause. Your ISP or the device manual can confirm requirements specific to your service and equipment.
