Often, yes: if your new phone has a physical SIM slot, is unlocked, and is compatible with your carrier, you can usually move the SIM and restart the phone. Check your carrier’s device-change instructions first, because some carriers require activation or other steps. An eSIM uses a digital transfer or activation process instead of a removable card.
Before moving a physical SIM, check these three things
- Unlock status: A phone locked to another carrier may not accept your current carrier’s SIM. AT&T lists an unlocked phone as one requirement for bringing an outside device to its network. AT&T’s bring-your-own-device guidance
- Carrier and model compatibility: Confirm that the exact phone model is supported on your carrier’s network. AT&T also lists compatibility and a device not reported lost or stolen among its requirements for an outside device. AT&T’s eligibility requirements
- SIM type and carrier steps: The phone must have a slot that accepts your SIM, and your carrier may require a device change or activation procedure. Tello says customers can usually move service with the SIM after checking compatibility and unlock status. Tello’s SIM-swap guidance
How to move a physical SIM
- Check the phone’s compatibility and unlock status, then confirm with your carrier whether it requires a device-change or activation step.
- Power off the new phone. T-Mobile instructs customers to insert an active SIM while the device is off. T-Mobile’s activation instructions
- Open the SIM tray with the ejector tool that came with the phone, or another suitable method. A tool is optional if you already have a way to open the tray; do not force the tray.
- Place the SIM in the tray in the orientation shown for the phone, insert the tray, and turn the phone on.
- Wait for it to connect. If it does not connect right away, Tello recommends restarting the phone. Tello’s troubleshooting advice
If the new phone uses eSIM
An eSIM is built into the phone, so there is no card to move. Transfer or activate it using a process supported by your carrier and device. Depending on the carrier and phone, setup may involve an account app, Wi-Fi, device identifiers, or a QR code.
- T-Mobile: Its activation flow may request an IMEI and ICCID for physical SIM activation, or an EID for eSIM. T-Mobile’s SIM and eSIM steps
- AT&T: The carrier directs customers to its account process for eSIM transfers. AT&T’s eSIM transfer guidance
- Samsung phones: Samsung describes eSIM transfer during setup and activation using a QR code supplied by the carrier. Availability depends on carrier support. Samsung’s eSIM guidance
Will swapping the SIM change your plan or give you 5G?
Moving your SIM does not itself change your carrier or plan. Verizon says a SIM transfer does not change billing; changing carriers requires a SIM or eSIM for the new network. Verizon’s SIM transfer guidance
A SIM card alone also does not guarantee 5G or every network feature. Check both the phone and SIM against your carrier’s compatibility guidance before expecting a particular network service. Verizon’s compatibility guidance

If the phone has no service after the transfer
There is no single fix that applies to every carrier. Check that the phone is compatible and unlocked, the SIM type fits the device, and the carrier does not require activation or a device-change step. If those checks do not resolve the problem, follow your carrier’s device-specific support flow. Tello, T-Mobile, and AT&T publish carrier-specific guidance.
