Yes. GitHub Pages can host a website by publishing HTML, CSS and JavaScript files from a GitHub repository, with an optional build process. It works well for static sites such as portfolios, project pages and documentation, but it is not a general-purpose server for applications that need server-side code or a database.
What GitHub Pages hosts
GitHub Pages is GitHub’s static-site hosting service: it takes website files from a repository, optionally builds them, then publishes the result. See GitHub’s overview of Pages.
You can publish a personal or organization site, or a site for a particular project. A personal or organization site uses a repository named <owner>.github.io. A project site is associated with its project repository and appears under a path on the owner’s github.io domain. You can also use a custom domain you own.
When GitHub Pages is a good fit
- A portfolio, résumé, informational site or project landing page made from static files.
- Documentation or a blog that can be generated into static pages.
- A site you want to maintain alongside its source code in a GitHub repository.
Your site needs an entry file such as index.html, index.md or README.md in the selected publishing source or deployment artifact. GitHub can publish from a branch or through a GitHub Actions workflow. When publishing from a source branch, Jekyll is used by default unless you disable that behavior or use a custom Actions workflow. Details are in GitHub’s site-creation guide.

What it cannot do
Pages serves static content; it does not run server-side languages such as PHP, Ruby or Python. A site that needs server-executed application logic, a database-backed feature, or server-side processing needs a hosting service designed for those requirements. Browser-side JavaScript is compatible with static hosting, but it does not turn Pages into a server for private application logic.
Is GitHub Pages free, and can the repository be private?
GitHub Free requires the repository used for Pages to be public. GitHub’s documented paid plans can publish from private repositories, but the published website remains publicly available on the internet. A private source repository therefore does not make the site private to visitors. Check GitHub’s current publishing requirements for plan details.

Limits and acceptable use
GitHub’s Pages limits documentation lists a maximum published-site size of 1 GB, a 10-minute deployment timeout, and soft limits of 100 GB of bandwidth per month and 10 builds per hour for the standard Pages build route. The build-rate limit does not apply when a custom GitHub Actions workflow builds and publishes the site. These are the figures in the current documentation; GitHub may revise them. See GitHub Pages limits.
Pages is not intended or allowed as free hosting for an online business, an e-commerce site, a website primarily facilitating commercial transactions, or commercial software as a service. GitHub also says Pages should not be used for sensitive transactions such as collecting passwords or credit-card numbers. Review GitHub’s acceptable-use limits before choosing it for a business or transaction flow.

Can you use your own domain and HTTPS?
Yes. Pages supports apex domains such as example.com and subdomains such as www.example.com or blog.example.com. You configure the domain for the Pages site in GitHub and set the corresponding DNS records with your domain provider. A custom domain is supported, but the domain itself must be owned by you. GitHub explains the options in its custom-domain overview.
- Verify ownership of the domain in GitHub to reduce the risk of someone else claiming it.
- Add the custom domain to the Pages site in GitHub before configuring DNS with your domain provider.
- Set the DNS records GitHub specifies for the chosen apex domain or subdomain. GitHub recommends pairing an apex domain with
wwwand warns against wildcard DNS records for Pages. - After DNS points to the site and the certificate is ready, enable HTTPS enforcement in the Pages settings.
Leaving DNS pointed at Pages after disabling the site can expose the domain to takeover. Remove or update those DNS records if you stop using the Pages site. See GitHub’s domain-management guidance, domain verification steps, and custom-domain troubleshooting.

How to decide
- Choose GitHub Pages if the finished site is static, fits the published-size and usage limits, and meets GitHub’s acceptable-use rules.
- Choose another hosting service if the site needs server-side execution, private access for visitors, or business and transaction features that Pages does not permit.
