Lightroom edits RAW files from supported cameras, on desktop and mobile. What decides whether your files open is your exact camera model and the version of Lightroom you run. Adobe publishes a model-by-model list, so you can check before you import.
What Lightroom does with a RAW file
Adobe says RAW files “contain unprocessed data from a digital camera’s sensor.” Lightroom turns that data into a full-color photo, and you control the result in the Develop tools. Adobe’s supported formats page for Lightroom Classic and Lightroom says Lightroom reads RAW data from most cameras. It does not say every camera.
Adobe also describes DNG as an openly documented archival RAW format. Lightroom Classic can convert proprietary RAW files to DNG.
Are my original files safe?
In Lightroom Classic, yes. Adobe’s Lightroom Classic FAQ states: “Lightroom Classic offers a nondestructive editing environment, which means your original photographs are never changed.” Edits are stored as instructions (metadata) and applied when you view or export the photo.

How to check that your camera is supported
- Open Adobe’s Cameras supported by Camera Raw list. Adobe last updated it on September 29, 2026.
- Find your camera’s make and exact model. Models in the same family can differ.
- Note the raw filename extension listed for it and compare it with your files.
- Read the minimum version for your product. The list gives separate minimums for Lightroom and Lightroom Classic.
- Compare that with your installed version and update if yours is older.
The minimum version differs from camera to camera, so there is no single version number that covers everything. Newer cameras generally need newer software.
Compatibility checks by platform
| What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Camera make and exact model | Support is listed per model. |
| RAW file extension | The list pairs each model with its extension. |
| Lightroom product | Lightroom, Lightroom Classic and mobile can have different minimum versions. |
| Installed version versus minimum | An older app will not read a newer camera’s files. |
| Desktop or mobile OS and import route | This matters most on Android. |
RAW editing in Lightroom mobile
Adobe’s mobile supported file formats page (last updated September 2, 2026) says proprietary camera RAW formats are supported for most cameras. They are processed into full-color photos in Develop. Device, OS, app version and camera model can still affect whether a file imports.

If RAW files will not import on Android
Adobe documents a specific cause in Unable to import CR3 and other raw files in Lightroom Android. Since Lightroom mobile 5.3.1, an Android OS compliance requirement means the app imports only RAW files that Android recognizes as images. Adobe lists two workarounds:
- Share the file to Lightroom with “Add to Lr”.
- Connect the camera in PTP mode.
