Yes—if “home test” means collecting a sample at home and sending it to a qualified laboratory. The evidence does not establish that consumer-operated strips or gadgets can reliably detect PFAS. Reliable testing depends on the laboratory’s method, the PFAS included in its panel, and how the sample is collected. For independent testing, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends a state-certified drinking-water laboratory.

What a reliable PFAS water test actually involves

Home sampling and home analysis are different things. You may collect a drinking-water sample at home, but EPA identifies laboratory analysis—not an at-home strip or gadget—as the supported approach for measuring PFAS. EPA says laboratories using Methods 533 and 537.1 can effectively measure 29 PFAS in drinking water. Those methods use laboratory instrumentation, including liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry. EPA’s drinking-water laboratory methods page describes the methods and their scope.

EPA identifies Method 533 (2019) and Method 537.1, version 2.0 (2020), as approved for monitoring under the Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Rule 5 (UCMR 5) and the PFAS National Primary Drinking Water Regulation. Method 537.1 superseded Method 537 for most applications, although EPA says Method 537 remains valid. A laboratory’s claim that it uses a “modified” method deserves follow-up: EPA says it is not aware of a standardized description or studies validating modified methods across multiple laboratories. Do not assume a modified method is equivalent to an EPA-approved one without checking its scope and validation.

The 29-PFAS figure is the combined coverage EPA attributes to Methods 533 and 537.1; it does not mean every lab tests all 29, or that the result covers every PFAS. Confirm the lab’s specific analyte list. A result applies to the compounds measured in the sample collected, not to unmeasured PFAS or every tap at every time.

How to choose a laboratory test

EPA encourages people seeking independent drinking-water testing to contact a state-certified laboratory. Certification programs and lab availability vary by state. Ask the state program which labs are certified for the relevant drinking-water analysis, and confirm details with the lab before ordering. EPA provides state certification-program and certified-laboratory contacts.

  • Certification: Is the lab currently state-certified for the relevant drinking-water PFAS analysis?
  • Method: Does it use EPA Method 533 or 537.1? If it uses a modified method, what was changed and how was that method validated?
  • Analytes: Which PFAS will the report include? Do not rely on a general “PFAS test” label alone.
  • Reporting limits: What are the reporting limits, and how will nondetects be shown? A nondetect means the compound was not reported above the stated limit; it does not establish absolute absence.
  • Sampling instructions: What container, collection procedure, and shipping conditions does the lab require? Follow its directions; collection errors can undermine an otherwise capable analysis.
  • Service details: Confirm that the lab serves your location, its turnaround time, and whether you collect and ship the sample or arrange collection through the lab.

Where to start: public water or a private well

If your home uses public water

Ask your water utility whether it has PFAS results, and request the sampling date and locations, analytes measured, and reporting limits. System results provide useful context, but they are not automatically a measurement of your specific household tap at the present time.

You can also consult EPA’s UCMR 5 data finder. EPA says the final UCMR 5 dataset was released in August 2026. Check the dataset’s sampling and reporting context before applying a result to your home.

If your home uses a private well

Contact your state environmental or health agency for testing advice or a list of state-certified labs using EPA-developed methods. EPA also says private-well owners may contact a state program or pay a certified lab directly. The agency does not regulate private wells in the same way it regulates public water systems. Its guidance on independent testing and state contacts is available through the certified-laboratory contact page.

What results can—and cannot—tell you

A laboratory report tells you what it found, or did not report above its limit, for the listed analytes in the particular sample. Read the result alongside the collection date and location, method, analyte list, and reporting limits. A limited panel should not be described as a test for every PFAS, and a result from a utility’s system sampling should not be presented as a direct test of every household tap.

EPA’s 2024 final drinking-water rule set maximum contaminant levels of 4.0 parts per trillion (ppt) each for PFOA and PFOS, and 10 ppt each for PFHxS, PFNA, and HFPO-DA (GenX). On May 18, 2026, EPA proposed changes that would retain regulation of PFOA and PFOS, offer water systems an option to request two additional years—to 2031—to comply, and rescind regulation of PFHxS, PFNA, HFPO-DA, and the specified mixture hazard index. Those changes are proposals, not finalized revisions; consult EPA’s PFAS drinking-water regulatory actions page for current status.

A drinking-water standard is not a personalized medical assessment. EPA says risk depends on contaminant level, exposure amount and duration, and individual factors. If a result raises health concerns, discuss it with a clinician and your state or local health department.

A filter treats water; it does not test it

Filtering is a separate decision from measuring PFAS. EPA recommends looking for independent certification for PFAS reduction, including NSF/ANSI 53 or NSF/ANSI 58. As of April 2024, EPA said current certifications focused on PFOA and PFOS and did not indicate that a filter would reduce PFAS to EPA drinking-water standard levels. Certification does not detect PFAS or confirm a test result. If you use a filter, follow the manufacturer’s replacement instructions. EPA explains these limitations in its PFAS drinking-water treatment guidance.
