Generative AI can help criminals trick people into giving up bank credentials, one-time codes, or access—but the evidence reviewed does not show AI independently breaking into a bank’s core systems. The main risk is account takeover using familiar fraud methods, made more convincing or easier to scale with AI. The FBI has specifically warned that criminals use AI-generated audio to impersonate people and seek access to bank accounts.
How AI can help criminals take over an account
Generative AI can produce polished, tailored messages and imitate voices or images. That can make established scams more persuasive and faster to run; it does not make the underlying deception a new kind of technical “hack.” The FBI says AI can help criminals create convincing emails, voice or video messages for fraud, while the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) has warned about AI-generated audio used to obtain bank-account access.
Phishing and social engineering
A criminal may pose as a bank employee and claim there is suspicious activity, then try to persuade a customer to click a link, enter login details on a lookalike site, or disclose a one-time passcode. AI-generated text can help tailor and polish such messages or produce them at scale. The FBI’s December 3, 2024 IC3 public service announcement and May 8, 2024 FBI San Francisco warning describe AI as an aid to fraud and deception, not a substitute for the steps needed to gain account access.
Fake bank websites and stolen credentials
In an advisory dated November 25, 2025, the FBI described criminals impersonating financial-institution staff or websites. A typical pattern is an unexpected call, text, or email about account trouble, followed by a link to a fake site designed to capture a login and possibly an MFA code. Criminals may also use lookalike paid-search ads to direct people to fraudulent sites. With credentials in hand, they may attempt a password reset and unauthorized access or transfers.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
AI is not necessary for this approach. IC3’s account-takeover guidance also lists phishing, social engineering, credentials exposed in data breaches, malware, and attempts to guess weak passwords when MFA is absent.
Voice and video impersonation
The FBI has explicitly warned that criminals may use AI-generated audio clips to impersonate people in attempts to access bank accounts. The Federal Reserve has also described voice synthesis that can imitate a bank client’s phrasing, tone, and inflection to request a transaction. These warnings establish a plausible impersonation risk; they do not show how often consumer voice checks are defeated, or that every bank uses voice as its sole identity check.

A familiar-sounding voice or convincing video is not proof of identity, especially if the person asks for a password, one-time code, or urgent transfer. The FTC notes that voice-cloning detection and watermarking have limitations: watermarks can be altered or removed, detection systems vary, and methods evolve. Its April 2024 analysis concludes that “there’s still no silver bullet to prevent the harms posed by voice cloning.” Treat visual or audio oddities as possible clues, not reliable authentication tests.
Synthetic identity is different from account takeover
AI can also feature in broader identity fraud. The U.S. Treasury describes synthetic identities—fabricated identities assembled from personal information—that may be used to open accounts or lines of credit. That is different from taking over an existing customer’s bank account; one should not be confused with the other. See Treasury’s 2024 report on AI-specific cybersecurity risks in financial services.

What AI can—and cannot—do, based on the available evidence
The government sources cited here describe AI making fraud more believable, faster, more scalable, or more automated. They document consumer-facing routes such as impersonation, credential theft, malware, and weak authentication. They do not establish that generative AI independently breaks bank encryption or directly compromises a bank’s core infrastructure. That is a limit of what these sources demonstrate, not a guarantee that banks cannot suffer technical attacks.
The FBI reported more than 5,100 account-takeover complaints and losses exceeding $262 million since January 2025 in its November 25, 2025 advisory. That is a time-bounded U.S. account-takeover total, not a count of AI-driven incidents or losses specifically attributed to AI.

How to reduce the risk of account takeover
- Enable MFA where your bank offers it. Use the strongest method available in the bank’s security settings. Check directly with your bank if you want to use a hardware security key; compatibility is bank-specific.
- Verify unexpected bank contacts independently. Do not follow links in an unsolicited message or use a phone number supplied by a caller. End the interaction and contact the bank using the number on your card or statement, or one from its official website that you accessed yourself.
- Never disclose a one-time code to an unsolicited caller or message. A request for a code, password, or urgent transfer is a reason to stop and verify through an independent channel.
- Use a unique, strong password for online banking, and secure the email account that can be used to reset it.
- Limit public exposure of voice and personal information where practical. This may reduce material available for impersonation, but privacy settings alone cannot prevent cloning or fraud.
What to do if you suspect fraud
- Contact your bank immediately using a trusted number. Report the suspected account access or unauthorized transfer and ask the bank to take action on the transfer.
- Change credentials that may have been exposed. Start with the banking password and any reused password; secure the email account used for password resets as well.
- Report the incident to IC3. Its account-takeover guidance says promptly requesting a transfer recall may reduce or eliminate losses.
