The Gemini mobile app on Android can control many devices connected to Google Home, and it can start some routines by voice or text. What works depends on your Google Account, device setup, and the specific controls and routine actions supported.
What Gemini can control
Google’s Gemini help lists these broad categories for smart-home control:
- Lights and power: lights, outlets, and switches. Depending on the device, commands can turn them on or off, dim lights, or set brightness and color.
- Climate: air conditioners, thermostats, heaters, and fans. Available controls can include changing thermostat settings.
- Window coverings: curtains, blinds, and shutters, including opening or closing them.
- Media: TVs and speakers, with controls such as power, volume, and playback.
- Other devices: examples include washers, coffee makers, and vacuums; supported commands can include starting or stopping a device.
Google says its Home app can control “over 50,000 smart home devices,” but that is an ecosystem-wide figure, not a guarantee that a particular model supports every command. A third-party bulb, for example, might respond to on/off commands without supporting dimming or color changes. Check the device’s Google Home listing, manual, or manufacturer for the exact action you need. Connect Gemini to Google Home
The documented mobile-app connection is for Android and requires the personal Google Account you use with Google Home. Keep Activity must be turned on, and Google says work and school accounts are not currently supported for this connection.

- On your Android phone or tablet, sign in to the Gemini app with the Google Account used in Google Home.
- Make sure Keep Activity is turned on for that account.
- Ask Gemini to control a device—for example, “Turn on living room lights.” If Gemini does not select Google Home, include “@Google Home” in your prompt.
- Follow the connection prompt and authorize access to the homes and devices available to that account.
Google says the connection also covers devices added or shared later. To disconnect it, go to the Gemini app’s Connected Apps settings. The documented integration is not available in Gemini on the web, Google Messages, or Live chats. Google’s connection instructions and account requirements
Try a specific command
Google gives examples such as “Set the AC to a good temperature for sleeping,” “Turn off the bedroom TV and lights,” and “Help me clean up the kitchen” to start a vacuum. These are examples of natural-language requests, not assurances that every device or installation supports those actions. If a request fails, try naming the device or room more specifically and verify that the intended control is available in Google Home.

Start some routines with Gemini
On Android phones and tablets, you can ask Gemini by voice or text to start some routines. Google does not support every routine starter or action. In particular, an action that needs a follow-up exchange—such as Gemini asking what time to set an alarm for—does not work as a routine action. Gemini tells you when an action is unsupported. How Google Home automations differ
A routine you ask Gemini to start is not the same thing as authoring a household automation in Google Home. Google Home automations are built from three parts:

- Starters: events that begin the automation.
- Optional conditions: restrictions that are checked when it starts.
- Actions: what the automation does.
Google Home’s automation tools—including its editors, Ask Home, and Help me create—support selected behaviors and devices, and availability can differ between tools. Not every device supports every starter, condition, or action; support may also vary by region and language. Google notes that some newly listed actions are not yet supported by Ask Home or Help me create. Check the specific automation tool and device before relying on a particular setup. What Gemini cannot do—and when not to rely on it
Gemini cannot unlock a door, perform security-device actions that require a PIN, or add or delete devices in your home. For some unsupported requests, it may open Google Home or provide a link instead.

Google cautions that home controls and automations are for convenience, not safety- or security-critical purposes. They depend on services and connections—including the internet, Wi-Fi, Google, and third-party manufacturers—and may fail to run. - Confirm the device has power and is connected to the same Wi-Fi network and Google Home household.
- Check that its firmware is current and that you selected the correct Google Account.
- Make sure it appears in Google Home; syncing may be needed for changes to show up.
- Verify that the device exposes the specific action you requested, not just basic on/off control.
Google Home setup and troubleshooting guidance
Gemini for Home is a separate rollout
Gemini for Home is Google’s newer home voice-assistant experience, not the same feature as connecting the Gemini mobile app to Google Home. Google says adding a Google Home Speaker (2026) makes a user eligible to opt in; early access has started rolling out to speakers and displays in select countries and languages. Once switched, compatible devices in that home use Gemini for Home instead of Google Assistant, and Google says the home cannot switch back. Some camera and automation features depend on Google Home Premium. These rollout details are not prerequisites for the Android Gemini app connection described above.
