A 2026 study of Australian Facebook ads found that messages using familiar communication styles often earned more clicks than neutral versions—even when both linked to the same official information. That is evidence about getting people to click, not proof that the messages changed minds, corrected misinformation, or improved understanding.
What the study tested
In a paper published September 24, 2026, JooYoung Lee and co-authors asked whether reliable information might attract more attention when presented in styles familiar to audiences encountered in anti-vaccination and far-right online communities. The team observed Australian Facebook groups and pages, collected 8,986 posts, and used months of online observation to develop three fictional audience personas. The authors describe these as context-specific research tools, not universal stereotypes. Read the peer-reviewed paper.
The researchers then ran paired Facebook-ad comparisons from May 1 to September 30, 2023. Within each pair, the ads linked to the same Australian government or government-affiliated fact sheet. Sponsor, image, target, campaign objective, attribution setting, and budget were held constant; the wording style changed. Of 15 designed pairs, Facebook cancelled two. One additional run repeated an Aaron supplements comparison, leaving 12 unique pairs in the primary analysis. Most campaigns used a lifetime budget of AUD 100 and ran for one week.
This design focused on presentation: it compared different ways of introducing the same underlying information, rather than different evidence or fact sheets.

Three audience personas shaped the writing styles
The personas and their associated styles were drawn from patterns the researchers observed in those communities. They were not claims that every person in a group thinks or communicates alike.

Some styles observed in misinformation posts included inflammatory or misleading elements. The experiment did not use false claims: it applied selected style elements to messages pointing readers toward official information.

Styled ads generally received more clicks
The main outcome was click-through rate (CTR): the share of ad viewers who clicked. The University of Technology Sydney’s October 6, 2026, summary reported a higher CTR for familiar-style wording in 11 of the 12 comparisons. The journal paper reports that styled versions had higher observed CTRs in all comparisons, but the Aaron-targeted supplements comparison was not statistically significant after Bonferroni correction, a method used to adjust for multiple comparisons. - School-education ads were clicked 6% of the time with familiar language, compared with 1.1% with neutral wording.
- Vaccination ads were clicked 0.98% of the time with familiar language, compared with 0.65% with neutral wording.
These are results from specific ad experiments, not forecasts or benchmark rates for future campaigns. As the authors put it, “Our results demonstrate that styled messages led to higher engagement among targeted Facebook audiences than the neutral-toned variants.” In this paper, “engagement” means ad clicks.
What clicks do—and do not—show
A click indicates that someone took an action to open the linked information. It does not establish that the person read the fact sheet, understood it, trusted it, remembered it, changed an attitude, or revised a belief. The experiment did not measure whether misinformation became less convincing or less widespread.

That distinction matters because the study answers a narrow but useful communications question: can wording make a reliable-information ad more likely to attract a click? It does not answer the larger question of whether this approach persuades people or improves decisions.
Limits on applying the result elsewhere
- One country and platform: The work used Australian Facebook groups and ads. It does not establish that the effect transfers to other countries, platforms, audiences, or current ad-delivery systems.
- Ad delivery shaped exposure: Facebook’s optimization influenced which people saw the ads, so the audience reached was not simply a fixed sample exposed identically to each message.
- Several wording features changed together: The researchers cannot identify which particular feature—such as emotional openness or an authoritative tone—drove a difference.
- One comparison was not statistically significant after correction: The supplements-ad result is a reason not to treat the pattern as uniform or guaranteed.
How communicators can use the idea responsibly
The practical lesson is to understand the questions and concerns an audience actually raises, then test different presentations of the same accurate evidence. For example, a vaccination message can acknowledge parents’ questions and direct them to reliable information without adopting a false claim or manufacturing alarm. The University of Technology Sydney’s summary frames the challenge as “how do you get reliable information in front of someone who isn’t looking for it?”

Style-matching is not a license to impersonate community members, exploit anxiety, or amplify fear. The authors emphasize addressing concerns transparently and accurately. Their proposed next step is to measure whether readers understand the information and feel better able to make decisions—outcomes this ad study did not test.
