OpenAI says a skill created in the Codex app can be used in the app, CLI, and IDE extension, and that teams can check skills into a repository. Those are different reuse routes: one lets a person use a skill across Codex surfaces; the other lets a team share and maintain skill files with a project. Neither means that project conversations or files are automatically shared with the skill.
Can I use the same Codex skill in multiple projects?
A Codex skill contains reusable workflow instructions and any supporting resources it needs. OpenAI says a skill created in the Codex app can be used in the app, CLI, and IDE extension. This supports reusing the workflow in those Codex surfaces; it is not a claim that every OpenAI product or account automatically synchronizes skills. See OpenAI’s Codex app announcement.
For work tied to a codebase or team, a skill can also live in a repository. OpenAI says teams can check skills into a repository so the team can use them. When a project checks out that repository, the skill files can travel with the project’s normal version-controlled files. Treat changes to the workflow as changes to shared project material: review them, and document any dependencies or setup the skill expects. That review practice is a recommendation, not a product guarantee.

The routes are not interchangeable. App-managed availability, repository checkout, and API environment configuration have different discovery and setup mechanisms. For API workflows, follow the OpenAI API skills guide rather than assuming an app-created skill will appear in an API session automatically.

What should a shareable skill contain?
OpenAI’s developer guide describes a skill as a directory with a required SKILL.md and optional supporting directories such as references/, scripts/, and assets/. Include the files the workflow actually needs; committing only the instruction file can leave teammates without referenced resources or scripts.
For maintainability, explain the skill’s expected inputs, steps, intended output, facts the model must not infer, when to ask or stop, and which supporting files to consult. These details help another person understand when and how to apply the workflow. OpenAI’s skill-building guidance covers the directory structure and authoring practices.

A skill does not necessarily run on every task just because a team can access it. OpenAI describes Codex as able to use a skill when a user explicitly asks for it or when it selects a relevant skill for the task. Make the intended use clear rather than treating repository presence as automatic execution.
Do Codex skills sync between the app, CLI, and IDE?
OpenAI’s Codex announcement says an app-created skill can be used in the app, CLI, and IDE extension. That is the supported cross-surface claim. It should not be expanded into a promise of live synchronization across ChatGPT, every account, or all API environments.

For movement between separate products, OpenAI Academy describes downloading and installing compatible skills and says skills do not yet sync across products. In other words, a portable skill format can make transfer possible, but portability is not automatic synchronization. Availability can also depend on the product surface and workspace controls; check the current settings or ask a workspace administrator when a skill is missing.
Can I use a ChatGPT skill in Codex?
Potentially, if the skill is compatible with the destination product and you transfer or install it there. OpenAI Academy describes skills as based on the Agent Skills open standard and explains cross-product use through download and installation, not automatic syncing. This does not establish that every ChatGPT skill works in Codex unchanged; confirm compatibility and follow the installation method for the product you are using.

ChatGPT workspace skills may also be governed by administrator permissions. The ChatGPT skills Help Center article describes workspace administration, but access rules can vary by product and workspace configuration.

No. A skill is a reusable workflow; a project is a place for context such as files and conversations. Sharing or reusing the workflow does not, by itself, copy a project’s files, chats, or other context. OpenAI Academy explains the distinction in its skills resource and its overview of using skills. If teammates need the project context, share that context through the project’s own controls or repository rather than assuming the skill carries it.
