Claude Code can read and edit Obsidian notes if it has access to the folder containing your vault. Obsidian notes are Markdown text files, and Obsidian documents that other text editors can edit them. You can launch Claude Code from the vault folder or grant it access to that folder; edits are subject to Claude Code’s permission settings.
How Claude Code works with an Obsidian vault
An Obsidian vault is a folder on your computer. Its notes are Markdown-formatted plain-text files, which means Claude Code can work with them through ordinary filesystem access rather than requiring a special Obsidian integration. Obsidian explains its file format and external-editing behavior in its data storage documentation.
Claude Code does not automatically get access to every folder on your device. The vault must be within its working directory or explicitly granted as an additional directory. Anthropic documents both working-directory behavior and the --add-dir option in its CLI reference.
How to give Claude Code access to your vault
- Find the vault folder. In Obsidian, use the vault you want Claude Code to work on. Obsidian also supports opening an existing folder as a vault; see Create a vault.
- Open a terminal in that folder. Start Claude Code there so the vault is its working directory. Alternatively, start it elsewhere and grant access to the vault using the documented
--add-diroption. - Give it a narrow task. Name the specific notes or folders to work on, describe the intended change, and state what must remain unchanged. For example: “Summarize the meeting notes in this folder into one new note. Preserve existing files, YAML frontmatter, filenames, and wikilinks.”
- Review proposed edits and permission requests. Claude Code’s available actions depend on its permissions and settings. Consult Anthropic’s Identity and Access Management documentation and the installed version’s current permissions interface. Broad permission settings are not required simply to grant access to a vault.
What Claude Code can change—and what Obsidian will show
With suitable permissions, Claude Code can read and modify the Markdown files it can access. It may also create notes or change existing text. If your instructions do not specify what to preserve, an edit could affect details important to your vault, such as frontmatter, wikilinks, filenames, or references to attachments. Restrict the requested scope and inspect the resulting changes.

Obsidian documents that it refreshes its view after external changes to vault files, so ordinary Markdown edits made by another tool should appear in Obsidian. A vault can also contain configuration files and attachments, not just notes. Limit the task to the content you intend to change; Obsidian’s storage guidance describes vault data and its sync documentation explains that synchronization arrangements matter.
If another sync service or tool is also changing the same files, overlapping edits can create conflicts or inconsistent results. The precise behavior depends on the sync setup, so avoid simultaneous edits unless you understand how that workflow handles them. Direct file access or the Obsidian CLI?

For routine note work, filesystem access is generally enough because the notes are files. Choose the CLI only when the operation you need is specifically available through its commands.

No—not necessarily. Claude Code runs locally, but Anthropic says prompts and model outputs are sent over the network to interact with the model. A note read into the model’s context or included in a prompt may therefore be transmitted for processing. Retention and training treatment can vary with the plan, settings, and current terms, so check the details that apply to your account before using sensitive notes. A cautious first run
- Try the workflow on a copy of a few notes or a small test folder before expanding it to the full vault.
- Ask for changes only in the folders or files needed for the task.
- Review edits for broken wikilinks, altered frontmatter, unintended filename changes, and missing attachment references.
- Keep an independent backup of important notes before allowing automated edits.
