In a 2025 experiment, YouTuber Gameboy Hub reportedly got key-like outputs accepted by Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows ME, but that did not prove those strings represented legitimate licenses. For Windows XP and newer, the generated keys were unreliable or unusable as Microsoft’s activation checks became more demanding.
What the experiment tested—and what it did not
BetaNews reported on May 2, 2025, that Gameboy Hub tried asking ChatGPT to generate or find product keys for Windows releases from Windows 95 through Windows 7. The creator also tried prompt workarounds and the paid version after the free, logged-out ChatGPT generally refused direct requests. Windows 10 and Windows 11 were discussed as possible upgrades, not reported as successfully activated in the experiment. BetaNews’s report does not publish a success rate or sample size.
There are several distinct outcomes in a test like this: whether ChatGPT responds, whether its output resembles a key, whether Windows Setup accepts the string, and whether Microsoft’s activation system confirms a valid entitlement. Passing an old setup check establishes only that the string passed that check; it does not establish that the user owns a license or that Microsoft recognizes the key as valid and unused.

Why an accepted key is not the same as a license
ChatGPT generates text; it is not connected to Microsoft’s licensing backend. It cannot check whether a product key is unused, blocked, tied to a device, limited to an edition, or assigned to an organization. A generated string might resemble a key or pass a limited local format check, but neither result grants an entitlement.
Older Windows releases could rely more heavily on local checks. Later versions use more involved activation processes, which can include online validation, edition and channel checks, hardware identifiers, firmware-embedded OEM keys, Microsoft accounts, and digital entitlements. The installer’s response and Microsoft’s confirmation of a legitimate license are therefore different things.

Can ChatGPT bypass Windows activation?
The experiment does not show that ChatGPT can bypass current Windows licensing. It illustrates how an old, comparatively weak check might accept a key-shaped string when its original activation infrastructure is no longer operating. It does not establish that the output is a valid license, that modern Windows will activate, or that the user has permission to use the software.
BetaNews said the creator did not show the working keys and did not condone piracy. Using leaked keys, key generators, modified licensing files, or activation bypasses can violate license terms and expose a system to security, reliability, and support problems.

Legitimate ways to use Windows for testing
- Use an official Windows evaluation image where one is available and its terms fit your testing needs.
- Install Windows on a device covered by an existing digital license, or use a valid retail, OEM, or volume license for the relevant edition and use.
- Where Microsoft permits it, install Windows without activating it while you evaluate the system, then obtain an appropriate license if you continue using it.
