In a 2025 preclinical study, researchers at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and startup Theranautilus used magnetically guided bioceramic nanoparticles to seal dentinal tubules in extracted human teeth and reported a behavioral recovery result in a small mouse experiment. Those findings are promising, but they do not establish a proven human treatment, long-term benefit, or a permanent cure.
Why the researchers targeted dentinal tubules
Tooth sensitivity can occur when dentinal tubules—tiny channels in the tooth—are exposed, allowing external stimuli to affect nerves inside the tooth. CalBots are designed to enter those channels and form plugs that block them. The goal is to address a physical route for sensitivity rather than simply reduce the sensation at the surface.
The study was conducted by researchers at IISc with Theranautilus. IISc says the work is progressing toward clinical use, but that describes a future direction, not an established treatment available to patients.
How CalBots are meant to work
CalBots are magnetic bioceramic nanoparticles. An external magnetic field guides their movement and helps them assemble into short chains, which the researchers say can travel more than 300 µm into dentin. The study authors reported an average particle diameter of 387 ± 55 nm.

In the experimental suspension, calcium oxide and water support formation of a calcium-silicate-hydrate gel in ambient carbon dioxide. The material then solidifies into a matrix inside the tubules. The study authors reported a solidification period of 2–20 hours.
What the 2025 study tested
Extracted human teeth
The researchers treated extracted human teeth with magnetic actuation for 20 minutes and reported deep tubule occlusion. These were teeth removed for clinical reasons, not living patients receiving treatment, so this part of the study shows material behavior in tooth samples rather than symptom relief in people.

Mice
The study also included a controlled mouse experiment. The treatment group contained six mice, and the paper describes full behavioral recovery from dental hypersensitivity in that group. IISc quoted first author and CeNSE postdoctoral researcher Shanmukh Peddi as saying, “We saw 100% behavioural recovery. That was a big moment for us.” The figure refers only to the treated mice in this experiment; it is not a human success rate.
Why “permanent fix” is not yet established
The reported findings do not show whether CalBots relieve sensitivity in people or how long any effect would last. The sources reviewed report no human clinical efficacy trial, long-term patient follow-up, regulatory authorization, or consumer availability for CalBots. Sealing tubules in extracted teeth and observing a mouse response are not enough to establish a permanent human cure.

How CalBots compare with existing options
The primary paper names sensitive-tooth toothpaste and adhesive resins as existing treatments, describing current approaches as surface-limited and short-term. It does not report a head-to-head human comparison showing that CalBots work better than either option.
