Not in the usual sense of telepathy. Brain-computer interfaces can turn some speech-related brain activity into words or device commands, and researchers have demonstrated a limited, computer-mediated signal passing between two people. Neither result shows that an implant can read arbitrary thoughts or enable unrestricted mind-to-mind conversation.

Can brain implants really make people telepathic?

Only as a loose analogy for a few narrow, engineered capabilities. In assistive brain-computer interfaces (BCIs), sensors record neural activity and a computer decodes a task-specific signal. In a brain-to-brain experiment, a computer relayed encoded information and stimulation helped a receiver perceive a simple cue. These systems depend on equipment and defined tasks; they do not reveal memories, images, private intentions or a person’s full stream of thought.

The word “telepathy” also has a specific use in Neuralink’s public messaging: the company uses it as a name for an assistive digital-control capability. That label is not evidence of ordinary person-to-person communication.

What have the different systems actually demonstrated?

System Signal being used What the recipient gets Evidence setting
Speech-decoding BCI Attempted speech Predicted words and synthesized speech Implanted research system used by one participant with ALS, reported by NIH in 2024
Inner-speech decoding Words imagined internally Decoded speech output; not arbitrary thought content Research development described by NIH in September 2025
Brain-to-brain proof of concept Motor imagery encoded as bits A consciously perceived light flash induced by stimulation Noninvasive, computer-mediated human experiment published in 2014

Attempted speech: a computer gives words back to the user

In the UC Davis system described by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in 2024, a 45-year-old man with ALS and severely impaired speech tried to speak while implanted electrodes recorded activity in a speech-related cortical area. Four arrays, each containing 64 microelectrodes, supplied signals to an external computer. The system predicted words, displayed them and converted them to synthetic voice.

Dental Overdenture Inferior Model, 6 Nail Dental Implant Model Removable Demo Model for Researching Medical Dentist Teaching Studying
  • Educational Model: Dental Typodont implant transparent model with removable mandibular base implant, which can show the implant more intuitively.
  • Real Materials: The dental implant material is acrylic resin, the transparent base, and the implant screws are also solid materials, which can show the mandibular overdenture more realistically.
  • Educational Tool: The dental implant restoration model is an excellent educational tool for dental students, dentists, and implant training education.
  • Durable Structure: The entire model is made of real dental implant material, which makes the model durable and reusable, and an excellent choice for demonstration.
  • Multiple Applications: It is suitable for dentists to show visual effects more intuitively in communication, and is used to demonstrate dental implant placement techniques. It is a perfect gift for dentists.

NIH reported that the system produced about 97.5% of words correctly after 16 hours of use by this participant. That figure belongs to this person, system and reported setup; it is not a general accuracy rate for speech BCIs.

Inner speech: decoding words imagined in the head

NIH’s September 2025 account describes research decoding inner speech—words a person forms silently in their head—from motor-cortex signals. This is a step beyond systems that generally rely on attempted physical speech, and it could matter for people whose paralysis makes attempted movement difficult. But decoding words imagined internally is not the same as interpreting every kind of thought. Caltech’s 2024 account also described an implanted BMI finding speech signals in a second participant; it does not establish broad thought-reading ability.

Brain-to-brain: a deliberately encoded cue travels through technology

In a 2014 proof-of-concept experiment, one participant used motor imagery measured with noninvasive EEG to encode binary values. The information was relayed through a computer-mediated, internet-linked setup. At the receiving end, neuronavigated, robotized transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) induced a conscious perception of light flashes. The paper called this direct communication between human minds, but the demonstrated exchange was a constrained signal transfer through technical equipment—not spontaneous conversation or transmission of rich thoughts. The paper characterized the information rates as modest.

What does Neuralink mean by “Telepathy”?

In its April 2024 PRIME Study progress update, Neuralink said its first intended indication was restoring “digital autonomy” for people with quadriplegia and called that capability “Telepathy.” The company described an investigational implant and a first-in-human clinical study; it reported the participant using the system for activities including online chess and a video game. Those examples concern controlling external digital devices, not communicating thoughts to another person.

How should you judge a claim about “mind-reading” technology?

Ask what neural signal the system uses, what output it produces and who took part in the study. A claim about attempted speech, inner speech, cursor control or a stimulation-induced flash describes a specific task—not unrestricted access to someone’s mind. Also distinguish an individual research result, a laboratory proof of concept and an investigational clinical study; none by itself establishes general availability.

Ultrassist Transparent Dental Implant Model for Patient Education
  • Crowns are made of high-quality resin material. The implants and abutments are made of metal and not cheap plastic. High quality materials ensure that the display model is sturdy and sturdy.
  • Crowns, roots, implants and abutments can be separated, which makes it easier to demonstrate the tooth structure individually to patients. Magnets embedded in the crown and the top of the root ensure ease of detachment. The magnets also make the crown and the root attach firmly in place with virtually no risk of falling off.
  • The 4 times dental implant model comes with a separate bridge to better educate patients about implant and bridge restorative options. The 4X Model visually helps patients better understand dental restoration procedures.
  • The cross-section base of the gingival bone is convenient for doctors to show the tooth structure to the patient. It also shows the integral relationship between the implant and the root. The bottom of the transparent dental implant model features an anti-slip base that provides friction on table top surfaces. This prevents the model from slipping or sliding.
  • The dental implant model is an excellent tool to introduce and explain dental implant(s) to patients or students. The excellent visual explanation makes it easier for everyone to understand.

The reports described here do not establish consumer availability, long-term durability or a comparative safety ranking across these systems. They show promising but bounded research and assistive applications, not a way for people to converse telepathically.
