Some may detect the first, weaker seismic waves and react seconds before stronger shaking arrives—but that is a response to an earthquake already underway, not a forecast. Reports of unusual behavior hours or days beforehand remain inconsistent and do not provide a dependable warning.
What the shark and elephant reports actually show
Sharks and fish at Point Defiance
An October 2026 report says Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium footage showed fish and sharks dashing as a magnitude 4.2 earthquake rumbled through Tacoma. The account describes movement during the earthquake; it does not establish that the animals reacted before it began or that sharks reliably behave this way. IFLScience’s report does not identify what the animals sensed.
Elephants at San Diego Zoo Safari Park
During a magnitude 5.2 earthquake in 2025, elephants at San Diego Zoo Safari Park reportedly formed a defensive circle around calves. The Associated Press account describes a protective response while the area was shaking, not evidence that the elephants foresaw the quake.
Why an animal may react before people feel strong shaking
An earthquake begins when a rupture starts underground. It sends out different kinds of seismic waves. The faster P-wave arrives before the larger, more damaging S-waves and surface waves. Animals with sensitive senses may detect the first wave before people notice the stronger motion. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) explains that such a reaction can occur seconds before stronger shaking reaches an observer; it is not advance prediction, because the earthquake has already started. - Your Safety Net: The Earthquake Detector not only minimizes confusion during seismic events but also provides invaluable peace of mind. By offering timely alerts, it strongly contributes to the safety of you and your loved ones, making it an essential part of any disaster preparedness plan.
A reported dolphin case illustrates the timing. In 2015, the National Aquarium said dolphins showed high-energy behavior as the P-wave arrived. Hydrophones registered the P-wave almost 22 seconds before the S and surface waves. Researchers thought the dolphins likely felt vibrations rather than heard them. This is one reported event, not proof of a general animal forecasting ability. National Aquarium’s account
Why reports of behavior days beforehand are hard to interpret
USGS says unusual animal behavior has been reported from weeks to seconds before earthquakes, but consistent, reliable behavior and a confirmed mechanism remain elusive. Animals can change their behavior for many reasons, so a striking incident after an earthquake does not show that the same behavior would have warned of it in advance.

- [ADVANCED P-WAVE SENSING] Detects fast-moving primary P-waves seconds before destructive S-waves arrive, giving your family critical time to shelter. Features long-range seismic coverage over 1,200 km (1,200,000 m) for early disaster warning.
- [ADJUSTABLE SENSITIVITY] Customize detection levels to eliminate false alarms caused by wind, door slamming, or passing heavy trucks. Ensures reliable alert triggering only when real seismic activity occurs.
- [HIGH-DECIBEL LOUD ALARM] Emits a powerful, high-decibel siren to immediately wake sleeping occupants and alert large spaces, including homes, offices, schools, factories, and commercial buildings.
- [BATTERY POWERED & READY] Powered by an included standard 9V battery with zero wiring required. Simple mounting design allows instant setup near structural walls for maximum vibration sensing efficiency.
- [ESSENTIAL DISASTER KIT] An indispensable safety addition to any emergency preparedness supply kit. Provides 24/7 continuous seismic monitoring to protect lives and property from unexpected earthquakes.
A 1981 USGS project by Dale F. Lott, Benjamin L. Hart and Kenneth L. Verosub tried to address a key weakness in anecdotal reports: it collected accounts of normal behavior as well as unusual behavior. The authors found unusual behavior a few hours to a few days before some, but not most, earthquakes without known foreshocks. Even when an individual animal reacts, other animals may behave normally. That makes it difficult to distinguish a useful warning from coincidence or ordinary variation. The USGS project report
To establish a reliable warning, observations would need to show that a specific behavior repeatedly occurs before earthquakes, is uncommon when no earthquake follows, and can be distinguished from other causes. The USGS says a reproducible connection between a particular behavior and earthquakes has not been established. USGS CoreFacts transcript

Could animals sense a precursor before an earthquake?
Researchers have proposed possible mechanisms, including sensitivity to sounds or vibrations associated with crustal movement. A 2017 peer-reviewed paper offers a testable framework for studying whether animals could detect such sounds, using elephants as an example because of their documented sound-related behavior. It proposes a research avenue; it does not demonstrate that elephants predict earthquakes. The 2017 paper
The USGS notes that historical stories—including an account of animals behaving unusually before an earthquake in Greece in 373 BC—are anecdotes, not controlled observations. A long history of reports does not establish a repeatable signal.

Detection is not the same as prediction
| Claim | When it happens | What the evidence supports |
|---|---|---|
| Seconds-ahead reaction | After rupture begins, when the first P-wave arrives but before stronger waves reach the observer | USGS describes this as plausible; the National Aquarium reported a timed dolphin example. |
| Advance prediction | Before the earthquake begins, potentially hours or days earlier | No reliable, reproducible animal behavior pattern or established mechanism is demonstrated by these sources. |
A quick reaction to the first wave may look uncanny, but it cannot be treated as a forecast of when or where an earthquake will occur. Animal behavior is not a dependable earthquake warning system.
