It brings a documented connected-display workflow to supported devices, while iPadOS 26 now has resizable windows, tiling, Exposé and external-display support of its own. The practical choice depends on your exact device, apps, files and preferred way to work.
What Android 16 desktop windowing lets you do
On supported large-screen devices, Android desktop windowing lets you use multiple app windows and move them between the device screen and a connected display. Google describes it as a collaboration with Samsung for large-screen devices; it is a windowed multitasking feature, not a promise that any Android 16 phone will turn into a desktop computer when plugged into a monitor.
Google’s developer documentation said connected displays were stable as of Android 16 QPR3 in its March 3, 2026 update. At that time, Google listed Pixel 8, 9 and 10 series, and Samsung S26, Fold7, Flip7 and Tab S11 families as supported. That is a dated support snapshot, not a guarantee for every model, region or software build. Check the current support information for the exact device you are considering.
Google’s Android Help describes the supported workflow, but does not establish universal monitor or accessory compatibility, or show that the feature makes users more productive. The important questions are whether your device supports the mode, how it connects to a display, and whether your apps behave well in movable, resizable windows.

Android devices and Samsung DeX are not one uniform experience
Samsung DeX is Samsung’s own desktop experience and remains relevant to Galaxy owners, but its behavior varies by device and software version. Samsung’s support material says the feature that let users drag an app to run on the opposite screen was discontinued starting with One UI 8.0. Don’t assume that a workflow shown for one Galaxy device or software release will work the same way on another.
For either Android desktop windowing or DeX, verify support for the specific device and software version, then test your own display connection and apps. A USB-C hub with HDMI may be part of a setup, but a hub alone cannot make an unsupported device output video.

iPadOS 26 has changed the comparison
The choice is no longer simply between Android windows and an iPad without windows. Apple’s iPadOS 26 introduced resizable app windows, window placement, tiling, Exposé and a menu bar. Apple says its windowing system also works with Stage Manager and an external display. Its support material covers Windowed Apps and using an external keyboard to navigate windows.
Those features do not make Android and iPadOS identical. Instead, compare the way each platform handles the work you actually do: arranging apps, using touch or a pointer, moving windows across displays, managing files and working away from a desk. The iPad you already own and the apps you rely on are part of that comparison.

Compare the workflows that matter to you

Try your real setup before replacing the iPad
- Check the exact Android model. Confirm current desktop-windowing support and required software for that model; do not infer support from the Android version number alone.
- Connect the display you plan to use. Confirm that the device supports display output and that your chosen connection method works. If using a USB-C hub with HDMI, verify compatibility with the device rather than assuming the hub enables video output.
- Run your actual apps. Open the apps you use for work or study, arrange their windows, and try the file operations you perform regularly. Note any app that fails to adapt or makes a key task awkward.
- Test your input and travel routine. Try the keyboard and pointer setup you expect to use, then use the device without the display. Decide whether it still suits the times you need a portable tablet.
- Repeat the same tasks on your iPad. Use the windowing and display options available on your iPad’s current iPadOS version. Compare task by task, rather than judging by the feature names.
Google’s and Apple’s announcements describe platform features, not a controlled head-to-head productivity test. There is no sourced benchmark establishing that Android desktop windowing is objectively faster or a better iPad replacement. Whether it is better for you is something to establish with the apps and setup you actually use.
