An old Android phone can control supported smart TVs and streaming devices over Wi-Fi, but it does not automatically become a universal remote for every device in your living room. Google TV and Roku offer official mobile remote apps for compatible devices; older infrared-only equipment needs a phone with a built-in IR emitter or a separate Wi-Fi-to-IR hub. Whether one phone replaces five remotes depends on the exact devices you own.
What an old Android phone can—and cannot—replace
A phone remote app sends commands over your home network to compatible smart TVs and streaming devices. That is different from infrared (IR), the signal used by many traditional TV and audio remotes. Installing an app does not give a phone IR hardware: for direct IR control, the phone must have a built-in IR emitter.
Network remotes are platform- and device-specific. Google’s remote supports Android TV and Google streaming devices through Google TV or Google Home, while Roku provides its own app for compatible Roku players and TVs. An old phone can consolidate control of devices that support these apps, but compatibility must be checked for each target.
Set up the official remote for your device
Android TV
- Connect the phone and Android TV to the same Wi-Fi network. Google’s Android TV virtual remote instructions specify that same-network connection is required for Wi-Fi control.
- Open the Google TV app and tap Connect TV.
- Select the TV, enter the code displayed on the television, and tap Pair.
If the TV does not appear, check that both devices are on the same network. Google recommends restarting the TV and setting up the virtual remote again if connection problems continue.

Chromecast with Google TV or Google TV Streamer
Google says to use Google Home or Google TV to control these devices. In the Google TV app, tap Connect TV, select the target, enter the code shown on the TV, and pair. Google documents controls for navigating apps, playback and settings, as well as typing with the phone keyboard and accessing bookmarks and inputs. See Google’s virtual remote setup instructions.
Roku
- Connect the phone and Roku device to the same Wi-Fi network.
- Install and open the official Roku mobile app, then allow it to discover devices.
- Select the Roku device you want to control.
Roku lists Android 5.0 or later for app compatibility and supports devices running Roku OS 6.2 or later, though features may differ by device. See Roku’s mobile-app setup and compatibility guidance. Roku also documents local-network access settings that affect mobile-app control and advises against third-party control apps for security reasons.

When you need infrared instead of Wi-Fi
If a device only accepts commands from an IR remote, a Wi-Fi remote app alone will not control it. You have two options:
- Use a phone with a built-in IR emitter. Confirm the phone has the hardware and that the app supports your specific appliance. The cited app listing makes IR control conditional on a built-in emitter.
- Add a Wi-Fi-to-IR hub. This separate device receives network commands from an app and sends IR commands to compatible equipment. Check the hub’s supported appliances, app, network requirements and setup process before buying. Product documentation for Wi-Fi-to-IR hub options describes control for TVs and other IR equipment.
A hub is optional hardware, not an IR upgrade to the phone itself. Compatibility can depend on the appliance model, its firmware, the region and the phone or app being used, so verify the exact combination rather than assuming a device will work because it uses a remote.

Check compatibility before retiring a remote
Make a list of the five devices you hope to control and identify how each one communicates. A network-connected Roku may work with Roku’s official app; an Android TV or Google streaming device may work with Google’s remote. A sound system or older television that relies on IR may require an emitter or hub. Some devices use other protocols, such as Bluetooth or RF, and an IR hub will not automatically cover them.
- Confirm the exact device model and supported app, not just the brand.
- Check required phone and operating-system versions, network conditions and any device-side settings.
- For IR control, verify that the phone has an emitter or that the hub explicitly supports the appliance.
- Test every essential function—such as power, volume, input switching and playback—before putting the original remote away.
App features and device compatibility can change. Google, Roku and app developers document their own support; third-party app listings are developer-provided information, not independent compatibility testing.

When a dedicated universal remote is still the better fit
A dedicated remote may be more convenient if you want physical buttons, reliable control without unlocking a phone, or one controller that supports a mix of devices and protocols. Compare the exact devices and functions you need, the protocols supported (IR, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi or RF), how many devices can be controlled, and whether a hub is required. A consumer guide to choosing a universal remote likewise emphasizes checking each streaming device and its required functions.
The practical answer is conditional: a spare Android phone can replace several remotes when those devices support its official network apps. It cannot control every living-room appliance by virtue of being a phone, and the title’s specific five-device result is not established for any particular household.
