Yes. An internet radio station can send its audio to YouTube Live while showing a single still image. You need an encoder that can take both the station’s audio feed and an image as its video source. YouTube documents encoder streaming generally, but does not describe or certify a special setup for internet radio with one still image.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming: YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. Enabling live streaming for the first time can take time. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- An encoder: YouTube defines an encoder as software or hardware that converts a feed for streaming. It needs to receive your station audio and a still image for the video. YouTube’s encoder workflow is explained at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Rights to stream the audio: Confirm that your music and other content licenses cover YouTube, the relevant territories, and live streaming. Existing radio or internet-radio permissions should not be assumed to cover this use.
- A reliable internet connection: The encoder must be able to upload the stream continuously while it is running.
Set up the radio stream with one image
- Confirm the channel can go live. Check YouTube Studio for live-streaming access and any restrictions. If this is your channel’s first live stream, allow for the activation time YouTube specifies.
- Create an encoder stream in YouTube Studio. In the Live Control Room, create or schedule a stream and copy its stream key. YouTube uses the key to identify and accept the encoder feed. Treat it like a password: do not publish it or share it publicly.
- Connect the station audio and still image in the encoder. Select the radio feed as the audio source and use the image as the video source. Check that the image is framed as intended and that the audio is audible and stable. This arrangement applies YouTube’s general encoder workflow; it is not a special YouTube-documented radio preset.
- Choose a supported stream profile. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video codecs for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, along with AAC or MP3 audio. Its guidance recommends 128 Kbps for stereo audio. Choose a resolution and video bitrate that suit your connection and encoder; a static image does not require you to select a particular resolution.
- Preview and test before going public. Check the stream preview in Live Control Room and confirm the picture, audio, and stream health. Use a private or unlisted test if appropriate, then monitor the stream after you go live. YouTube’s advice is at Streaming tips.
Audio hardware: when you need an interface
You do not automatically need a separate audio interface just because the stream uses a still image. If the station audio already reaches the computer as a digital source the encoder can select, that may be sufficient. If the audio comes from external physical equipment and the computer cannot receive it directly, you may need suitable input hardware. YouTube notes that encoder workflows can use external audio hardware, but does not prescribe a particular interface.

Music rights and YouTube rules
YouTube’s livestream terms require the broadcaster to have the necessary rights to exploit the live content on Google services, including applicable music rights from artists, record labels, publishers, and other rights participants, and to meet local legal and licensing requirements. Requirements can vary by territory and repertoire. Review YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions and verify your own licenses before streaming.
The channel and stream must also comply with YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. Live-streaming access can be restricted, so eligibility at setup does not remove the need to follow platform rules while broadcasting.

Can it stay live 24/7?
A still image and radio feed can be used in an encoder stream, but YouTube’s general setup and network guidance does not guarantee uninterrupted or permanent 24/7 internet-radio simulcasting. A local encoder depends on the computer, audio source, power, and internet connection continuing to work, so test the full signal path and monitor it rather than promising uninterrupted service.
