It depends on your measured electricity use, local power tariff, internet plan, stream bitrate, and the VPS’s real transfer and performance limits. An already-owned laptop can cost less in cash if it draws little power and your home connection is stable. A VPS moves the stream off your laptop but adds server rental and data-transfer costs—and you still handle setup, monitoring, and recovery. A managed cloud service costs extra but removes the need to keep a home computer running.
For a fair comparison, calculate each option’s monthly cash cost and include the quality it can sustain, interruption risks, and your time. This guide is about continuously sending prerecorded video to YouTube; a live camera or demanding scene may require different hardware and a separate cost estimate.
What determines the cheaper option?
There is no single India-wide winner. The useful comparison is not a VPS headline price against a generic electricity estimate: it is the cost of keeping your particular stream online at the bitrate and quality you want.

- Laptop or PC: incremental electricity based on measured wall draw, any incremental broadband or data cost, and any power backup or replacement hardware you need.
- VPS: rental and taxes, included outbound transfer and overages, storage, and any upgrade needed to handle encoding. The provider supplies the server’s electricity, but you remain responsible for setup, security, monitoring, and restarts.
- Managed cloud: subscription and tax, plus any channel, storage, quality, or billing-period limits. It reduces the home-connection and always-on-computer burden, while making you reliant on the service provider.
Compare all three on four axes: recurring cash cost, ability to encode and deliver your chosen bitrate, continuity and recovery when a connection or process fails, and setup and monitoring time. If one looks cheaper only because you excluded labor or reliability, say so in your calculation.

Estimate the cost of leaving a laptop or PC on
Measure the whole system at the wall
- Run the intended streaming workload, including the encoder and the video you will actually loop.
- Measure the computer’s power draw with a plug-in power meter or another suitable meter. An adapter’s rated wattage is not the same as the computer’s measured consumption.
- Calculate monthly energy use: watts × hours ÷ 1,000 = kilowatt-hours (kWh). For a 30-day month, use 720 hours.
- Multiply the kWh by the marginal electricity rate shown on your bill, then add any incremental broadband, data-overage, or power-backup cost.
If you already own the computer and already pay for broadband, separate those existing costs from the additional cost of streaming. Do not assign the full purchase price or entire internet bill to the stream without explaining why.
Use illustrative figures only as a reasonableness check
One published example assumes a 120–200 W desktop and ₹7–₹8 per kWh, producing an estimated ₹605–₹1,152 for 30 days. Those are assumptions in an illustrative calculation, not a laptop measurement or a national electricity tariff. Use your own measured draw and bill rate instead. See the example calculation.
Calculate bandwidth before choosing a VPS
For a continuous stream, the configured bitrate—not resolution by itself—is the main driver of outgoing data use. At a sustained bitrate of 1 Mbps, a 30-day month contains 2,592,000 seconds: 1,000,000 bits per second × 2,592,000 seconds ÷ 8 gives 324 decimal GB before protocol overhead. That works out to about 1.62 TB at 5 Mbps or 3.24 TB at 10 Mbps. These are planning calculations; confirm how your provider defines GB and TB, and allow for overhead. YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends H.264 at 10 Mbps for 1080p30 and 12 Mbps for 1080p60. These are recommendations, not requirements for every continuous stream. YouTube advises choosing a quality that will remain reliable on your available upload connection; test with similar audio and video motion and monitor stream health. Check the VPS bill, not just its advertised starting price
A low monthly rental does not establish the total cost or prove that a server can handle your chosen stream. Before signing up, check the provider’s current terms and the configuration you would actually need.
- Monthly rental, taxes, billing term, and renewal price.
- Included outbound transfer, any overage charge or throttling, and whether an “unmetered” or “zero-egress” claim has limits in the provider’s terms.
- CPU capability for your chosen encoder workload, RAM, storage, and the price of any necessary upgrade.
- Server location and delivery conditions relevant to your connection, without assuming location alone improves or harms YouTube reach.
- What you must do to configure the stream, secure the server, monitor it, and restart it after a failure.
As dated examples, iTechGuides reported an Inservers advertised starting price of ₹880/month and a CloudPe listing of ₹930/month for 4 GB RAM and 30 GB NVMe, checked on October 3, 2026. These are provider-specific entry listings, not verified all-in bills or evidence that either configuration can sustain a particular stream. Confirm the current listing and terms directly. Compare options by cost, continuity, and effort

Fill in the amounts from your own meter, electricity bill, internet plan, and the current provider terms. Then compare the resulting cash totals alongside achievable bitrate, continuity, recovery, and time spent. There is no reliable conclusion from a VPS rental alone or from an assumed laptop wattage.
What YouTube setup and stream limits matter?

YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate encoding, a two-second keyframe interval (not exceeding four seconds), and testing and monitoring the stream. Match the upload quality to what your connection can reliably sustain; YouTube transcodes streams into multiple viewer formats. See the current encoder settings guidance.
YouTube states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That does not establish that any arbitrarily long, uninterrupted broadcast will be archived as one video. If the archive matters, plan the stream lifecycle rather than assuming a perpetual broadcast will produce one complete recording; scheduled segments or appropriate restarts may be necessary for your content and setup. Regardless of whether you use a laptop, VPS, or managed service, you remain responsible for having the right to stream the prerecorded video and audio and for following YouTube’s applicable copyright and monetization policies. A continuous stream is not a workaround for those rules.
