A supported Samsung Galaxy Tab can offer DeX, a desktop-like interface with resizable app windows; supported Android 16 devices also have connected-display desktop features. Neither capability guarantees that every app or Android tablet will behave like a laptop. Check the exact model and test your real work tasks before you switch.
Start with the work you need the tablet to do
Compare the specific iPad and Android tablet you are considering—not iPadOS against Android in the abstract. List the tasks you perform during a normal workday, then verify that the Android candidate handles each one. An app appearing in an app store is not enough: check that you can sign in with your work account, open and exchange the right files, join calls, and use any organization-managed features your job requires.
- Edit a document while referring to a browser or another app.
- Download a file, then attach or share it from the app your team uses.
- Join a call while taking notes or consulting work materials.
- Use the work identity, cloud storage, and access controls required by your employer.
- Work on an external monitor, if your workflow depends on one.
Tablet app availability and optimization are useful comparison points, but comparative coverage is not a substitute for testing your own apps and tasks. Microsoft’s mobile-app directory can help identify available apps; it does not establish that your organization’s workflows, licenses, or features are equivalent on Android and iPad.
Check the exact Android model and its software
“Android tablet” does not describe one uniform set of multitasking and display features. Samsung’s US support documentation lists the Galaxy Tab S11 as supporting standalone DeX, where apps can appear in pop-up windows and multiple windows can be moved or resized. The same documentation says that starting standalone DeX from the Home screen and managing DeX workspaces in that way requires Android 16 with One UI 8.0 or later.

Google says connected-display support became generally available with Android 16 QPR3. On supported devices, it describes resizable app windows and keyboard and mouse input on a connected display. For a supported tablet such as the Galaxy Tab S11, Google describes extending the desktop session across both displays. These are device- and software-dependent capabilities, not a promise that all Android tablets or apps support the same setup.
Decide whether you need windows or a second screen
Working on the tablet itself
If you mainly need two or more apps visible together, try your usual combinations on the exact device. Samsung describes movable and resizable app windows in standalone DeX on supported models. Test whether the apps you rely on can be arranged usefully and whether their controls remain practical at the sizes you need.

Connecting an external display
If your work depends on a monitor or TV, confirm whether the tablet supports your intended wired or wireless connection. Samsung documents wired HDMI or DeX-cable connections and wireless connections to compatible TVs or monitors, but its support page also names models that do not support wireless DeX: Tab S9 FE, Tab S9 FE+, Tab S10 FE, Tab S10 FE+, and Tab S10 Lite. Verify the desired mode for the specific model rather than assuming support from the Samsung name.
Android 16 QPR3 connected-display support is another option on supported devices. Confirm that the exact tablet, software version, display connection, and apps work together as you expect; the feature description alone does not establish compatibility for every setup.

Account for input, accessories, and the full setup
Regular typing, pointing, handwriting, or monitor use can change whether a tablet works for you. Samsung lists a keyboard cover, mouse, and S Pen among the input options for DeX. Before buying, try the keyboard and pointing device you intend to use, and check that any case or accessory fits the tablet’s exact generation and model. If you need a stylus or external display, test those parts of the workflow too.
Compare the cost of the complete setup, not just the tablet: include the compatible keyboard case, pointing device, stylus, cable or hub, and display if you need them. A model-compatible Galaxy Tab S11 keyboard case is relevant if you expect frequent typing; a USB-C-to-HDMI cable or hub is relevant only if your tablet supports the wired configuration you plan to use.

Get your employer’s approval before moving work
Consumer product documentation cannot determine whether your organization permits a particular Android model or supports its security and device-management configuration. Ask the employer or IT team to confirm the model is approved, can be enrolled, meets required security controls, and can access the work accounts and services you need. Do this before transferring work files or relying on the tablet for critical tasks.
Use this pre-switch checklist
- Write down your normal work tasks. Include the apps, file exchanges, calls, account sign-ins, and display arrangements involved—not just a list of app names.
- Verify the exact candidate. Check the tablet model and current software version. Do not infer that one Galaxy Tab supports a feature because another does.
- Test the real workflow. On the candidate device, complete the tasks that matter, including app sign-in, file handling, calls, multitasking, and any external-display use.
- Confirm work approval and management. Get confirmation that your employer permits the device and that its enrollment and security requirements work.
- Try the full accessory arrangement. Check keyboard, mouse or trackpad, stylus, monitor, and connection compatibility; include the necessary accessories in your cost comparison.
- Keep the iPad during the transition. Retain it until critical files, account access, and work routines have been verified on Android.
How to make the decision
An Android tablet is a plausible iPad replacement when your essential apps and work accounts function on the exact model, your employer approves it, and its multitasking and input options fit your routine. If any task is unverified—especially a required app, managed-work feature, or external-display setup—treat that as an open compatibility question, not as something the operating system’s feature list can answer. Test it before you switch.
