Sometimes, but not reliably enough to treat a chatbot as the authority on an intimate relationship or a major life decision. It may help you organize your thoughts, consider alternative interpretations, or prepare questions for a trusted person or professional. A fluent, empathetic answer is not proof that the chatbot understands your situation or has judged it well.

What the evidence says about chatbot relationship advice

A 2024 study by Haonan Hou, Kevin Leach, and Yu Huang examined ChatGPT’s judgments about intimate relationship problems. The researchers analyzed 13,138 Reddit posts and tested how ChatGPT’s judgments aligned with human judgments, including whether the model gave consistent decisions when asked identical queries. They reported significant differences between ChatGPT and human judgments, as well as inconsistency in the model’s own decisions. The paper was published in the Proceedings of the International AAAI Conference on Web and Social Media.

That finding is a reason to be cautious, not a universal accuracy score. The study focused on ChatGPT under particular prompts and evaluation conditions. It did not test every chatbot or current version, establish how often all AI relationship advice is correct, or measure what happened to people who followed the advice.

Why a confident, caring answer can still be unreliable

A chatbot can produce a plausible response without knowing everything that matters: what happened before the story you shared, how each person behaves over time, what you have left out, or what risks may be present. Its tone can sound validating, but tone is presentation—not evidence of human understanding or sound judgment. The American Psychological Association advises readers to assess AI-generated advice critically and not make major life decisions solely on it. Its guide to navigating AI-generated advice recommends using a chatbot to organize thoughts or questions while involving trusted people and qualified professionals as appropriate.

When a chatbot may be useful—and when it is not enough

For reflection and preparation

For a low-stakes first pass, you can use a chatbot to help name what is bothering you, list questions you want to discuss, or think through more than one interpretation. Treat the result as a prompt for your own reasoning, not a verdict on who is right or what you must do.

To make that exercise more balanced, provide relevant context, ask what information might be missing, request alternative explanations, and ask for reasons that could challenge the first answer. Check factual claims independently. These are practical ways to engage critically; they are not methods shown by the relationship study to make AI advice reliable.

For major decisions or mental-health needs

Do not let a chatbot make a major decision for you. Talk it through with people you trust, and seek qualified professional help when the situation calls for it. An AI conversation may help you prepare for that discussion, but preparation is not professional care.

The APA’s November 2025 health advisory says general-purpose generative AI chatbots and wellness apps should not replace a qualified mental-health provider. It distinguishes research on purpose-built interventions from the thinner evidence on general-purpose chatbots, which does not support strong conclusions about their mental-health use. For immediate safety concerns

If you are dealing with abuse, coercion, risk of self-harm, acute distress, or another immediate safety concern, prioritize appropriate human and emergency support rather than relying on chatbot guidance. The cited relationship-advice study did not evaluate chatbot crisis responses.

What you can reasonably conclude

  • Chatbots can assist with reflection, but an empathetic or confident answer should not be mistaken for reliable judgment.
  • One study found mismatch with human judgments and inconsistency in ChatGPT’s relationship-problem assessments; it does not establish a general failure rate for all chatbots.
  • Evidence about general-purpose chatbots as mental-health support remains too limited for strong claims that they reliably provide therapy or relationship counseling.
  • Use a chatbot as a tool for preparing questions or exploring possibilities—not as the final authority on an intimate relationship or consequential decision.
