Yes. AI models can help find software vulnerabilities, especially when they can inspect code, use tools, run tests, and check their own hypotheses. But performance varies by task and setup, and a suspicious code path, crash, or benchmark score is not by itself proof of a security flaw. A credible finding needs reproducible evidence of security impact.
What can AI models do in vulnerability discovery?
Depending on the task, an AI model may flag suspicious code, compare vulnerable and patched versions, suggest test cases, analyze a crash, or help investigate whether a flaw is exploitable. These are different levels of work. Identifying a possible weakness is not the same as reproducing it, establishing its impact, or producing an end-to-end exploit.
Performance also depends on the system around the model. In Project Naptime, Google Project Zero described a framework that gave models an interactive program environment and specialized tools, including debuggers and scripting, with automated verification and multiple investigation trajectories. The resulting measurements describe that model-and-harness setup—not an unaided chat model or a general rate of success in real-world research.
What do published evaluations show?
The results below measure different tasks and should not be treated as directly comparable measures of field performance. They do show why the test setup and the definition of success matter.

| Evaluation | What was tested | Reported result and what it means |
|---|---|---|
| Google Project Zero, Project Naptime (2024) | A tool-supported LLM research framework on CyberSecEval 2 memory-corruption tasks. | The framework improved performance by up to 20 times relative to the original paper’s reported results. It scored 1.00 on Buffer Overflow tests, up from 0.05, and 0.76 on Advanced Memory Corruption tests, up from 0.24. These are scores on those benchmark tasks, not a 20-fold increase in real-world vulnerability discoveries. |
| Meta, CyberSecEval 2 (2024) | Security capabilities including vulnerability-exploitation tasks and prompt-injection and code-interpreter-abuse tests. | Meta reported that coding-capable models performed better on vulnerability-exploitation tasks than models without coding capability, while further work remained necessary for proficient exploit generation. Across the models tested, 25%–50% of prompt-injection tests were successful; that benchmark result is not a real-world attack rate. |
| IBM Research (2024) | Eight LLMs across 228 code scenarios and eight investigative dimensions. | The study design probes whether models can identify and reason about security vulnerabilities across scenarios. Its findings should be read as evidence about the tested models and cases, not every model or security task. |
| OpenAI, GPT-5.6 system card | CVE-Bench 1.0 and a longer-horizon evaluation, VulnLMP, against real, widely deployed software using source-available targets and a research harness. | For CVE-Bench, OpenAI says it ran 34 of 40 challenges, withheld application source code, used a zero-day prompt configuration, and measured pass@1 over three rollouts. In VulnLMP, it reports credible memory-safety leads, reproducible crashes, root-cause analyses, and, in some strongest runs, controlled exploitation primitives. It reports no independently produced functional full-chain exploit or verifier-confirmed Critical-level outcome in that evaluation. |
The evaluations do not establish a single industry-wide success rate for AI-assisted vulnerability discovery. CTFs, sandboxed web applications, source-available targets, and longer research campaigns exercise different skills and access conditions. A score on one is not a reliable proxy for performance across arbitrary software or attack surfaces.
When is an AI-generated lead a real security finding?
Use a ladder of evidence rather than treating every alert as a discovery. The further a claim goes—from suspicious code to demonstrated security impact—the more verification it needs.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Suspicious code or hypothesis: The model points to a possible weakness or proposes a test. This is a lead to investigate, not a confirmed vulnerability.
- Reproducible behavior: A test reliably reproduces the issue under documented conditions. A crash or sanitizer report can help establish a bug, but does not by itself show that the bug is security-relevant.
- Verified impact: Independent checks establish what an attacker could affect, under what conditions, and with what access. OpenAI’s system-card evaluation describes using reproducible artifacts, controls, and verifier-owned evidence of impact or a controlled exploitability primitive.
- End-to-end exploit: A functional exploit demonstrates a stronger capability than a crash or a controlled primitive. These success definitions should not be collapsed into the single label “found a vulnerability.”
For anyone assessing a model or tool, ask what counts as success, whether results repeat across runs, what access the system had, and who verified the outcome. A polished explanation from a model is not a substitute for a reproducer and independently checked evidence.
Why do tools and task design change the result?
Vulnerability research often involves trying a hypothesis, observing what a program does, and revising the next test. Project Naptime’s results illustrate that interactivity and specialized tools can matter: the evaluated system could work within a program environment, use debugging and scripting tools, and verify results. More time or parallel attempts can also change what a system finds.

That makes the tested unit a system—not just a model. When comparing products or research results, establish whether the task involved source-code review, patch analysis, exploit generation, remote web probing, a CTF, or long-horizon target research; whether source code was available; and whether the setup included a build system, debugger, verifier, or multiple trajectories. Without those details, a headline score says little about how the result transfers to a different workflow.
What are the risks and limits?
- False leads: A plausible explanation or crash may not reproduce or demonstrate security impact. Validation takes time and can expose the tested system to unsafe inputs.
- Dual use: The same assistance can help defenders identify and prioritize flaws or help attackers develop offensive capability. Testing should be limited to systems the tester is authorized to assess, and sensitive findings should be handled responsibly.
- Safety trade-offs: Meta reported both prompt-injection susceptibility in its tested models and a trade-off in which conditioning models to reject unsafe requests can also lead to false refusals of benign requests. Those observations are benchmark-specific, not universal rates for deployed tools.
- Limited coverage: A result for a particular benchmark, target class, access level, or model-and-tool setup cannot establish reliable autonomous discovery across arbitrary software. OpenAI’s system card also notes limits in the coverage of CTF, CVE-Bench, and Cyber Range evaluations; strong benchmark performance alone does not establish high cyber capability.
Does this mean AI systems themselves are secure?
No. Using AI to find flaws in ordinary software is a different question from securing AI systems. A UK Department for Science, Innovation and Technology assessment maps cybersecurity vulnerabilities across AI design, development, deployment, and maintenance. Some risks are conventional software weaknesses, some are specific to AI, and some overlap. AI systems therefore need security assessment throughout their lifecycle as well as, where appropriate, AI-assisted testing.

How should defenders use AI-assisted discovery?
Treat a model as an investigation aid whose output must pass the same evidence standards as any other security lead. A disciplined workflow is:
- Set scope and authorization: Define the codebase or environment to test, what actions are permitted, and how sensitive findings will be protected.
- Choose a narrow task: Specify whether the goal is code triage, patch comparison, test generation, crash analysis, or another task. Avoid treating a general request to “find vulnerabilities” as a meaningful test specification.
- Provide a controlled environment: Where appropriate, give the system safe access to the code, build process, tests, and debugging tools needed for the task.
- Reproduce and verify: Run proposed tests independently, preserve the conditions and artifacts needed to repeat the result, and establish security impact before calling it a vulnerability.
- Review the process as well as the finding: Check for missed cases, inconsistent results across runs, unsafe tool actions, and unsupported claims in the model’s explanation.
For teams choosing an AI-assisted tool, evaluate it on representative tasks with known expected outcomes. Track leads separately from reproducible bugs and verified-impact findings; otherwise, a system that generates many plausible but unconfirmed alerts can look more capable than it is.
