Using AI to critique a student’s own work may support learning better than asking it to produce a finished answer—but current evidence available for this claim does not verify that the approach raises grades. A 2026 study examined a structured AI-supported writing program in one primary school in Eastern China; its accessible record describes the design and some motivation findings, but not the writing-performance results or a grade effect.
What “AI for feedback, not answers” means
In a feedback-focused approach, a student writes a draft first, then asks an AI tool to comment on specific features of that draft. The student considers the suggestions, checks them against the assignment, and chooses whether and how to revise. The AI is a source of feedback—not a substitute author whose finished work is copied or submitted.
For example, a student might ask whether the main opinion is clear, whether the paragraphs follow a sensible order, or whether particular sentences are difficult to understand. In the 2026 study, a translated sample prompt asked the AI not to rewrite the student’s entire text. That distinction matters because receiving comments and making one’s own revision decisions is a different learning activity from accepting a ready-made response.
What the 2026 study actually examined
The study, Exploring the impact of a GenAI-supported writing program on primary students’ writing motivation, engagement, and performance: A mixed methods study, involved 301 Grade 5 and Grade 6 students at one primary school in Eastern China. Eight classes were assigned at the class level to either GenAI-supported or conventional instruction: 151 students were in the experimental group and 150 in the control group. The program lasted nine weeks, with a pre-test in Week 1 and a post-test in Week 9. The authors assessed writing performance in opinion/content, organization, and language use, and interviewed 12 students from the experimental group. The AI prompts addressed clarity of opinion, organization, and language, while directing the tool not to rewrite the whole text. This was a planned instructional program, not a test of casual AI use at home or of every subject, age group, or AI product.
Did the students earn higher grades?
The accessible study information does not establish that they did. It does not provide a grade comparison, a numerical writing-performance result, or an effect estimate with uncertainty. Although the article’s title includes writing performance, its title and methods alone cannot show that performance improved. Without the reported results, it would be inaccurate to say that the program raised grades or caused better writing.

The record does report motivation findings: ChatGPT users showed no motivational gains compared with controls, and their ideal L2 writing-self scores were lower than those of students using automated writing evaluation systems. Motivation and self-beliefs are not the same outcome as grades or writing performance, so these findings neither prove nor disprove an achievement effect.

Feedback can make AI part of a student’s thinking process rather than a way around it. A student still has to understand the task, judge whether a suggestion is relevant, and decide what to change. That creates opportunities to notice weaknesses and practise revision. But those opportunities are not proof of higher achievement: a helpful-sounding comment can be wrong, too broad, or mismatched to the teacher’s criteria.

A 2026 systematic review about over-reliance on generative AI in higher education discusses scaffolding learning and having students evaluate AI output. A practical feedback routine for students
- Write your own first draft. Keep the assignment prompt and any rubric in view so the work remains yours and the criteria are clear.
- Ask for a narrow critique. Request feedback on one aspect at a time—for example, whether the main claim is clear or whether the paragraph order is logical. Tell the tool not to rewrite the whole piece.
- Check each suggestion. Compare it with the prompt, rubric, course material, and your intended meaning. Do not assume AI feedback is accurate just because it sounds confident.
- Revise selectively. Make changes you understand and can explain. Preserve your own voice and reject advice that does not fit.
- Follow your class rules. Teachers and schools may set limits on AI use or require disclosure. Those rules take priority over a general feedback routine.
What this evidence can—and cannot—tell students and teachers
- It can illustrate a structured method: students write, seek targeted comments, evaluate them, and make their own revisions.
- It concerns a specific setting: Grade 5 and 6 writing instruction in one Eastern China primary school over nine weeks.
- It does not establish a general grade benefit: the accessible record does not show the writing-performance comparison or a grade effect.
- It separates outcomes: motivation and writing self-beliefs are not interchangeable with achievement.
- It does not settle every use case: the findings cannot automatically be applied to other ages, subjects, schools, or AI tools.
