Those rules are voluntary crawler instructions, not an access-control barrier. To keep material private or reliably deny access, use authentication or enforce restrictions at the server, CDN, or firewall.
What robots.txt can—and cannot—do
The IETF’s Robots Exclusion Protocol (RFC 9309, September 2022) defines how a site can ask crawlers to avoid specified URLs. The file belongs at the site’s service root, such as https://example.com/robots.txt. As the RFC states, “These rules are not a form of access authorization.”
In practice, a crawler that follows the rules should not fetch disallowed paths. But robots.txt does not require a crawler to comply, prevent a person from opening a URL, or protect a page from a request made by a bot that ignores the file. Google likewise explains that robots.txt controls crawler access and traffic, not confidentiality or guaranteed removal from search results: Google’s introduction to robots.txt.
Choose which AI use you want to permit
Do not assume every AI-related crawler has the same purpose. OpenAI documents separate controls for ChatGPT search discovery and potential model-training crawling. Google’s Google-Extended token addresses certain Gemini-related uses, while Anthropic documents a crawler opt-out for ClaudeBot.

For the current operator-specific details, consult OpenAI’s crawler documentation, Google’s crawler documentation, and Anthropic’s ClaudeBot guidance. Crawler policies and effects can change, so confirm the live documentation when making a site policy decision.
Block only the crawler you intend to block
A robots.txt rule uses a user-agent group followed by directives. For example, these separate groups request that GPTBot and OAI-SearchBot avoid the entire site:

User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Disallow: /This is illustrative syntax, not a tested configuration or a recommendation to block both agents. Include only the group matching your policy. In particular, disallowing OAI-SearchBot can remove the site from ChatGPT search answers, while allowing it and disallowing GPTBot separates search discovery from the documented training-related crawl.
For other operators, use the precise user-agent token they currently specify in their official documentation. Do not guess a token or assume that similarly named crawlers share a purpose. A robots.txt group is a request to matching crawlers, not proof that a requester is who it claims to be.

Use access controls for private or restricted content
If the goal is to keep content confidential or prevent access rather than express a crawler preference, do not rely on robots.txt. Put the content behind authentication or enforce denial through server, CDN, or firewall rules. User-agent strings can be imitated, so they should not be the sole security boundary.
Google notes that a URL blocked from crawling may still appear in search results if other pages link to it. If the concern is search indexing rather than access, use an appropriate indexing control such as noindex; if the concern is confidentiality, use access controls. Robots.txt alone is not a substitute for either.

Deploy and check the rule
- Decide the policy. Identify which named crawler or use you want to allow or disallow, and consider the visibility effect of blocking a search-discovery crawler.
- Edit the root file. Put the relevant user-agent group and rule in the site’s root
robots.txt, not in a page-level file. - Check the response path. Confirm that the root robots.txt is reachable and that the server, CDN, or WAF behaves as intended. If you need enforced denial, test the actual protected request path and response as well as the robots file.
- Recheck operator guidance. Use current official documentation for each crawler token and behavior; published policies and service effects can change.
