A VPN can help protect data in transit on public Wi-Fi, but it does not reliably protect you from phishing, malware, or account scams. A VPN routes network traffic through a VPN provider; it does not make a deceptive message trustworthy, remove malicious software from a device, or secure an account with stolen credentials.
What a VPN can—and cannot—protect
The Federal Trade Commission says a VPN app can help shield information sent over public, open Wi-Fi. That is a network-traffic benefit, not a general guarantee of safety. A VPN may be one privacy layer, but it is not a substitute for secure websites or protections on your browser, device, and accounts. The FTC also recommends researching a VPN app, reviewing its permissions, checking that it encrypts information, and understanding whether it shares data with third parties. On public Wi-Fi, look for HTTPS and use the organization’s legitimate website. The FTC explains that a secure website encrypts information even if the Wi-Fi network itself does not: how to safely use public Wi-Fi networks. A VPN does not verify that a site, message, or caller is genuine.
Does a VPN protect you from phishing?
Not reliably. Phishing works by deceiving you into trusting a message or website and sharing information, such as a password or payment details. The FTC describes scammers impersonating trusted sources to obtain personal information that can be used to open or access accounts. A VPN can route your connection differently, but it cannot reliably identify a convincing fake email, text, call, pop-up, or site. The FTC’s phishing guidance explains how these scams work.

What to do with a suspicious message
- Do not click an unexpected link or attachment. CISA advises verifying suspicious messages through a known, trusted route rather than using contact details in the message: CISA’s phishing and social-engineering advice.
- Open the organization’s website using an address you already know, or contact it using independently verified details.
- Be cautious of urgent requests for passwords, payment, or personal information, even when a message appears to come from a familiar organization.
Does a VPN protect you from malware?
A VPN is not a dependable way to detect or remove malware already on your device. Some VPN products may offer optional filtering features, but that does not make every VPN an antivirus tool or establish that it can clean an infected device. The FTC recommends reliable security software with automatic updates, along with automatic updates for your operating system and browser. Its malware guidance covers recognizing and addressing infections.
If you think your device is infected
- Stop entering passwords or other sensitive information on the suspected device.
- Update its operating system, browser, and legitimate security software, then run a scan.
- From a different trusted device, change passwords for affected accounts and enable multi-factor authentication where available.
Does a VPN stop account scams or account takeover?
No. A VPN does not prevent an attacker from using a password you disclosed, reused, or lost in a breach. Protect account access with a unique password for every account and multi-factor authentication (MFA), especially for sensitive accounts. A password manager can help you maintain unique passwords. The FTC recommends these practices in its account and identity protection guidance.

MFA adds another check beyond the password. The FTC gives a USB token as one example of an additional factor; it is useful only for accounts that support that method. MFA does not make phishing impossible, so continue to verify unexpected requests and sign-in prompts.

The FTC’s VPN-app guidance dates to 2018, so check current claims and privacy practices for the particular app you are considering. The practical distinction remains: a VPN is a possible network-privacy layer, while phishing, malware, and account access call for protections aimed at messages, devices, and credentials.
