Sometimes—but there is no universal winner. A used desktop can cost less if you already own it or buy it cheaply, its measured power draw and local electricity rate are modest, and your home internet plan can handle the stream. A VPS can be cheaper when its monthly fee and included outbound data cover your actual traffic, without the added costs of electricity, hardware upkeep, or a home connection.
Compare the full monthly cost for your workload, not a desktop’s purchase price against a VPS’s advertised starting price. The calculations below show what to count and where each option can become more expensive.
What determines which option costs less?
The answer depends on what you are streaming and how many people receive it. A single continuous live stream sent from a computer to a platform has different network demands from a video server delivering separate playback sessions to many viewers. Start by defining the workload before comparing plans.
- Watch time: How many hours per month will the stream run? For a continuous 24/7 stream, use the actual hours in the month; 720 hours is a 30-day example, not every month’s total.
- Video bitrate: Use the bitrate you intend to send or serve. Higher bitrates increase outbound data use.
- Audience and concurrency: Record the number of simultaneous viewers and whether each viewer receives a separate video feed. Do not assume a single outbound stream and multi-viewer delivery use the same data.
- Storage and retention: Include video files, backups, and how long the files need to remain available.
- Operating requirements: Note the needed uptime, recovery after outages, platform compatibility, geographic location of viewers, and how much setup and maintenance you are willing to handle.
Calculate the desktop’s full cost
For a used office desktop, add the purchase cost spread across its realistic remaining service life to its monthly operating costs. If you already own the machine, do not treat it as free: include a reasonable allowance for wear, repairs, storage, and eventual replacement.

Measure your own desktop rather than relying on a generic wattage. StreamNeo’s 2026 cost article uses roughly 120 W at the wall for a “mid-range desktop encoding a stream” as an illustrative vendor assumption, with a 720-operating-hour monthly example; it is not an independent measurement or a representative specification for used office PCs. StreamNeo’s cost example should therefore not substitute for your own meter reading.
Calculate the VPS cost, including outbound data
A VPS bill can include compute, disk, backups, networking, and outbound transfer beyond the plan’s allowance. A low advertised base price is useful only if the instance can handle the workload and its included transfer is sufficient.
As a provider-specific example, DigitalOcean’s public Droplet pricing page, accessed October 3, 2026, lists bundled plans starting at $4 per month; its displayed 512 MiB entry plan includes 500 GiB of outbound transfer. The allowance varies by plan, and the entry plan’s price does not establish that it can serve every video workload. Check DigitalOcean’s current Droplet pricing for the plan you would actually use.

DigitalOcean’s bandwidth documentation says additional outbound transfer costs $0.01 per GiB, inbound transfer is free, allowances are pooled across a team’s Droplets, and unused allowance does not roll over monthly. These are DigitalOcean-specific terms, verified September 14, 2026; other VPS providers may price transfer differently. See DigitalOcean’s bandwidth billing rules.
Estimate outbound traffic from your actual video bitrate, operating hours, and delivery pattern, then compare the result with the allowance of the plan and region you select. For multiple independent viewers, account for each viewer’s delivery rather than assuming one stream’s traffic covers all playback. Add disks, backup, and any other required services to the total.
Build a like-for-like monthly comparison
Use the same workload assumptions for both options. A simple worksheet keeps the comparison grounded in your own tariff, hardware, traffic, and service choices.

Then compare upfront cash as well as monthly cost. A desktop may require a purchase before it becomes cheaper month to month; a VPS avoids buying local hardware but can accumulate transfer or storage charges. There is no break-even figure that applies across electricity rates, ISP plans, desktop condition, VPS regions, and audiences.
Costs are not the only trade-off
Home desktop: more control, more local dependencies
A desktop depends on household power and a stable, sufficient upstream connection. Public reachability and ISP rules can matter when you are hosting a service directly; check your plan and connection rather than assuming your home network is suitable. You are responsible for keeping the machine, storage, and software running and recovering them after a failure.
VPS: hosted infrastructure, provider-specific limits
A VPS avoids operating the machine at home, but you still manage the server unless the plan includes a service that does so. Compute limits, data allowances, backup costs, and geographic latency vary by provider, plan, and region. Confirm that the selected configuration supports the intended streaming or playback software; a starting-price plan is not proof of suitability.

Managed video delivery is a separate category
Cloudflare Stream is not a general VPS. Its official pricing page describes billing by stored video minutes and delivered video minutes: storage is sold in increments of $5 per month per 1,000 stored minutes, and delivery costs $1 per 1,000 delivered minutes, with bandwidth included in delivery pricing. Cloud desktop cost guidance also illustrates why a quoted compute price may not be a complete bill: Microsoft’s Azure Virtual Desktop guidance identifies virtual-machine compute, managed-disk storage, and network bandwidth as resource charges, with related identity, licensing, and optional services potentially adding cost. - Using a vendor’s assumed wattage as your PC’s draw: Measure the desktop at the wall under the intended task.
