Yes—but only if the doorbell explicitly supports Ethernet networking. A PoE doorbell can use one Ethernet cable for both data and power, while a doorbell wired to an existing low-voltage transformer may still rely on Wi-Fi for data. Check the model’s network, power, and chime specifications before you buy.
What “wired” means for a smart doorbell
“Wired” can describe power, networking, or both. A doorbell connected to the home’s existing low-voltage wires may have continuous power but still send video and notifications over Wi-Fi. To avoid Wi-Fi at the door, choose a model that lists Ethernet as a supported network connection.
For example, Reolink distinguishes its Wi-Fi doorbell, which connects on 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz Wi-Fi, from its PoE doorbell, which uses Ethernet for networking. See Reolink’s explanation of wired and wireless doorbells.
Ways to connect and power a doorbell
| Option | Network connection | Power and checks | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|
| PoE Ethernet doorbell | Ethernet | Confirm the model’s PoE standard and power requirements; route cable to the door. | A home where Ethernet can be run to the mounting point and the doorbell should not use Wi-Fi. |
| Ethernet networking with separate low-voltage power | Ethernet for data | Check that the model accepts the existing transformer’s voltage and wiring. | A home with a route for Ethernet and a compatible existing transformer. |
| Wired-power Wi-Fi doorbell | Wi-Fi | Check transformer voltage and Wi-Fi coverage at the door. | Someone who wants continuous power but does not need wired networking. |
| Battery Wi-Fi doorbell | Wi-Fi | Account for charging and check the model’s recording limitations. | A location where neither power nor Ethernet can be routed and Wi-Fi is acceptable. |
How PoE works—and why the standard matters
Power over Ethernet (PoE) carries network data and electrical power over one Ethernet cable. Reolink describes its PoE doorbell as using one cable for network and power, connected to a compatible PoE switch or injector. The company also documents Ethernet networking with a separate low-voltage power input for its doorbell. See Reolink’s power and connection guidance.

Do not assume all PoE doorbells use the same standard. Ring specifies IEEE 802.3at PoE+ for its Wired Doorbell Pro (3rd Gen), while Control4 specifies 802.3af for its C4-VDB-E. Match the injector or switch to the exact model specification, rather than buying equipment based only on the label “PoE.”
What to check on specific doorbell models
Ring Wired Doorbell Pro (3rd Gen)
Ring lists Ethernet or Wi-Fi 6 on 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. Its PoE+ connection requires IEEE 802.3at. Alternatively, the model accepts 16–24 VAC at 10–40 VA, with 30–40 VA recommended, or 24 VDC at 12 W. Ring recommends at least 15 Mbps average upload for its 4K devices. The PoE adapter must be indoors, and Ring estimates installation at roughly one to two hours. These are Ring’s product-specific specifications, not requirements for every Ethernet doorbell. See Ring’s Wired Doorbell Pro (3rd Gen) specifications.

Reolink Video Doorbell PoE
Reolink documents Ethernet through a PoE switch or injector, or Ethernet for data with separate 24 VDC or 12–24 VAC, 50/60 Hz power. Its support article says the existing mechanical chime will not work as-is and directs users to pair a Reolink Chime. Check the wiring instructions for the particular model and setup at Reolink’s PoE doorbell support page and its existing-wiring guide.
Control4 Chime Video Doorbell (PoE), C4-VDB-E
This ecosystem-specific option requires a Control4 system running OS 3.2 or later, plus Cat5e/6 or better cable to an 802.3af PoE injector or switch. Its waterproof Ethernet connector assembly needs a 1-inch passthrough hole and clearance behind the mounting bracket. Control4 says installation and maintenance should be performed by qualified technicians. Consult the Control4 Chime Video Doorbell setup guide for the full requirements.

Plan the cable run, mount, and chime
Before ordering, trace a practical cable route from the network equipment to the door. Check that the cable connector can pass through the wall and fit behind the mounting bracket; the Control4 guide’s 1-inch passthrough is specific to that model, not a universal dimension. Also plan where the PoE switch or injector will sit indoors and verify its standard against the doorbell’s requirements.
Existing chimes are another model-specific detail. Reolink says its PoE/Wi-Fi doorbell will not operate an existing mechanical chime as-is and recommends pairing its own chime. Ring says its current PoE model includes a Chime Kit Mini that replaces chime functionality. Confirm the chosen model’s chime documentation if you want to keep using an existing chime.

Using existing doorbell wiring for power
If the doorbell uses Ethernet for data but existing wires for power, check the transformer voltage and follow the manufacturer’s circuit instructions. Reolink lists 24 VDC or 12–24 VAC, 50/60 Hz for the relevant models, and notes that a chime bypass may be needed. An incompatible or unmodified chime circuit can cause unstable operation or abnormal chime behavior, so do not assume the old wiring is suitable without checking.
Turn off power before working on doorbell wiring. If the wiring or circuit changes are beyond your experience, use a qualified electrician or installer.

Does Ethernet guarantee better reliability or security?
Ethernet gives the doorbell a wired network path, so it avoids relying on Wi-Fi at the door. The manufacturer documents cited here describe supported connections and installation requirements; they do not establish a measured reliability or security advantage over Wi-Fi in real homes. Choose Ethernet to meet a wiring or network preference, not on the assumption that a particular performance improvement has been independently demonstrated.
Quick Recap
Buying checklist
- Confirm Ethernet is listed for networking; “wired power” alone does not mean wired data.
- For PoE, match the doorbell’s exact standard—such as 802.3af or 802.3at—and power requirements to the injector or switch.
- Verify any alternate power input against the transformer’s voltage and the manufacturer’s wiring instructions.
- Measure the cable route, wall opening, and clearance behind the mount.
- Check whether the existing chime works, needs a bypass, or must be replaced or paired with a chime accessory.
- Compare recording and storage method, smart-home compatibility, and subscription requirements in the product documentation; these details vary by model.
