Sometimes—but only if valid authentication state is explicitly made available to the screenshot browser. A remote screenshot service cannot automatically read cookies stored in your everyday browser. Even when a service accepts cookies, the site may require additional sign-in state, and sharing session cookies can let someone impersonate you.
How cookie reuse works
A screenshot service typically opens the page in a browser environment of its own. To see a members-only page, that browser must receive valid authentication state or complete a supported sign-in flow. There are two distinct approaches:
- Transfer authentication state: provide cookies or other saved browser state to the capture browser, if the service supports it.
- Sign in through a supported workflow: have the capture browser authenticate using a method the service and website support.
These are explicit ways to authenticate a separate browser session, not automatic access to cookies held by your local browser. For example, Playwright documents saving authentication state and loading it into a new browser context. Cloudflare Browser Run documents authentication options for its screenshot endpoint, including a cookies parameter.
Why cookies may not be enough
A signed-in session can depend on more than cookies. Playwright identifies cookies, local storage, IndexedDB, and passkeys as possible places where web apps store authentication state. Session storage may need separate save-and-load handling. Whether a cookie alone works depends on the target site’s authentication design and the screenshot provider’s capabilities.

A screenshot that shows a login page does not, by itself, mean the service is malfunctioning. Possible causes include missing or expired state, authentication data stored outside cookies, or a sign-in flow the provider does not support. Check the provider’s instructions and the site’s requirements before treating the result as a service failure.
Choose a capture method with the credential risk in mind
For a one-off screenshot
If a local screenshot from your already signed-in browser is sufficient, it avoids transferring session cookies to a third party. Use a remote service when you need automation or another capability that local capture does not meet.

For remote or automated capture
Before supplying credentials or browser state, verify that the service explicitly supports the authentication method your site uses. Review its current security and privacy information for how submitted state is stored, who can access it, how long it is retained, and whether and how it can be deleted. Endpoint documentation showing that authentication is possible does not establish those data-handling practices.

- Use a limited-purpose account where possible.
- Provide only the authentication state needed for the capture.
- If session state is exposed, revoke or rotate it where the site allows.
Playwright cautions that “The browser state file may contain sensitive cookies and headers that could be used to impersonate you or your test account.” Treat a saved state file or live session cookie as a credential, not as harmless configuration.

What to check when evaluating a service
- Authentication methods: Does it support cookies, HTTP authentication, login steps, or the state your target site requires?
- Browser model: Does it use a separate browser context, or can it capture through a connected local browser? Do not assume one model from the word “screenshot.”
- Credential handling: What do its current terms and security documents say about storage, access, retention, and deletion?
- Target-site requirements: Does the site also rely on local storage, session storage, a passkey, or another step?
Support varies by provider and site. For instance, Screenshot API documentation describes a cookies parameter using name/value pairs that are set for the target host before page load. That demonstrates explicit cookie input for that API; it does not mean every screenshot service accepts cookies or that the target site will accept them.

For an API-based capture, ScreenshotNeo takes a URL in one GET request and returns an image or PDF. Its API documentation covers its request options. This is an alternative capture workflow, not a way to import cookies from your everyday browser; use it for a members-only page only if the authentication method you need is supported and you have reviewed the credential implications.
Quick Recap
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com/members -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. It also provides an MCP server for AI agents, with tools including take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. Learn about ScreenshotNeo, then sign up free for 1,000 screenshots a month with no card.
