NASA’s Imagine the Universe! Q&A, answering the question “Is the Earth affected in any way by quasars?”, puts it plainly: “Because of their great distances from us, quasars have no real effect on the Earth.” Even a jet aimed along our line of sight is a statement about geometry and apparent brightness, not about a beam reaching us.
Why distance settles the question
Quasars are extremely distant objects. The light we see left them after crossing vast stretches of space. NASA’s Goddard answer, written by Eric Christian and Maggie Masetti, rests its conclusion on exactly that: distance.
A real example shows the scale. NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center reported in 2023 that the blazar Markarian 421 is roughly 400 million light-years away. Markarian 421 is a blazar, a type of active galactic nucleus that points a jet toward us, and it is still remote.
What “pointed at Earth” actually means
Headlines about a quasar or blazar “pointing at us” describe orientation. NASA defines a blazar as an active galactic nucleus (AGN) with one jet directed toward Earth. Because the jet material moves at close to light speed, relativistic (Doppler) beaming boosts its apparent brightness for an observer in that direction.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
So the alignment explains why astronomers see the object as especially bright. It is not evidence of a close encounter, and it does not mean a physical beam is acting on our planet.
Are the jets real, and how big are they?
Yes. NASA’s Fermi mission page describes some supermassive black holes accelerating “relativistic bipolar jets of ejected material to speeds near the speed of light, which stretch up to hundreds of kiloparsecs outside the host galaxies.” That is an outflow on the scale of a galaxy and beyond. It describes the jet’s extent around its own host, not a distance to Earth, and it should not be read as one.

Could the gamma rays hurt us?
Gamma rays are among the emissions astronomers observe from blazars, and that is how telescopes such as Fermi study them. But detecting high-energy photons is not the same as receiving a harmful dose.
The NASA sources give no radiation dose at Earth for any named quasar, no estimate of atmospheric effects, and no biological-risk threshold. Any claim of a specific dose or danger would need a measured flux from a particular source and a transparent calculation. No such figure is established here, so the supportable answer stays qualitative: NASA concludes the effect is negligible because of distance.

The brightness comparisons you may see are also about output, not exposure. NASA’s Webb explainer says quasars can emit 100 to 1,000 times as much light as an entire galaxy of 100 billion stars. That measures how luminous the source is at its own location, not what reaches us.

Key terms
| Term | Meaning | Relevance to Earth |
|---|---|---|
| Quasar | A very luminous AGN powered by accretion onto a supermassive black hole. The name comes from “quasi-stellar radio source,” though many quasars are radio quiet (NASA). | Extremely distant; no real effect on Earth (NASA Goddard). |
| Relativistic jet | An outflow accelerated to near light speed from an AGN, in some cases stretching up to hundreds of kiloparsecs (NASA Fermi). | Extends around its own host galaxy; no Earth hazard established. |
| Blazar | An AGN with one jet oriented toward Earth, made to look brighter by relativistic beaming (NASA). | Describes viewing angle and apparent brightness, not proximity. |
How to phrase the question accurately
- “Could a quasar jet hit Earth?” No known jet does; the sources are extragalactic and extremely far away.
- “What if a quasar is pointed at us?” Then we observe it as a blazar, with boosted apparent brightness. That is the viewing geometry astronomers already study.
- “Could its gamma rays hurt us?” No dose or biological harm has been established; NASA’s answer is that distance leaves no real effect.
