Studies report different results for different switches and tasks. The best choice depends on which keyboard lets you type accurately and comfortably, with feedback and noise you can tolerate.
What the studies say about typing speed
There is no established, universal percentage increase in typing speed from moving to a mechanical keyboard. The available experiments compare particular switches, keycaps, participants, and tasks; their results cannot be combined into a general promise about words per minute.
Findings also conflict on which switch is fastest. A 2024 English-language experiment with 33 participants found switch characteristics affected speed, accuracy, and subjective experience; tactile switches performed better than linear switches in its blue-versus-red comparisons. Backlighting also improved speed and other subjective measures in that experiment. Read the 2024 study in MDPI Electronics.
By contrast, Wenkai Fu’s 2025 experiment reported higher typing speed and accuracy with red switches than with blue or brown switches. Blue switches provided stronger tactile feedback and produced more noise. Read Fu’s 2025 study.

A 2026 study testing nine switch-type and keycap-height combinations found clicky switches yielded faster typing and stronger tactile feedback, but also the highest noise. Low keycaps increased satisfaction, while high keycaps increased discomfort. Read the 2026 Industrial Engineering & Management Systems study.
These differences mean there is no evidence-based single answer to “Which switch is fastest?” A result for one group and task does not establish what will be fastest for you.

Which keyboard characteristics matter?
Switch feedback and noise
Mechanical switches differ in feel and sound. Linear switches move without a distinct tactile bump; tactile switches have a bump; clicky switches add an audible click. The studies above do not agree on which type produces the highest speed, and the more audible feedback of clicky switches may be a drawback in shared or quiet spaces.
Keycap height and travel
Keycap height can affect comfort and satisfaction, according to the 2026 study, but that finding does not establish a universal best height. Nor should shorter key travel automatically be treated as faster or more ergonomic. A 2019 Applied Ergonomics study found one short-travel, 0.55 mm dome design produced 8% slower typing, 12% higher typing force, 6–8% higher forearm muscle activity, and twice the discomfort compared with the other devices tested. Those figures apply to that experiment and design, not to all short-travel or mechanical keyboards. Read the 2019 study on PubMed.

Layout and familiarity
A different layout can interfere with existing muscle memory while you adapt. If speed matters, compare keyboards with the same layout you already use, rather than changing layout and switch feel at the same time.

It may feel better to some users, but the evidence does not establish that mechanical keyboards generally reduce hand fatigue. In a 2021 study of 20 participants comparing brown and silent-red switches, participants rated tactile switches better for satisfaction, finger fatigue, and pleasure. The study found no significant performance differences. Read the 2021 study.

Comfort is individual, and switch type is only one part of how a keyboard feels during extended use. Treat a switch that feels comfortable in a short tryout as a promising fit, not a guarantee against fatigue.

How to choose one for your typing
- Keep your layout familiar. Start with a keyboard layout matching the one you use now so you can judge the switch and key height without introducing a separate adjustment.
- Try switch styles if possible. Compare linear, tactile, and clicky options by typing ordinary text, not just pressing keys a few times. Notice both errors and how the feedback feels.
- Consider the environment. Clicky switches were the loudest in the 2026 study. If noise could disturb other people, test the keyboard in a setting like the one where you will use it.
- Pay attention to comfort and key height. Do not assume that a shorter-travel design or a particular keycap height will suit you. Stop if a test session causes discomfort.
- Judge accuracy as well as speed. A faster burst that includes more mistakes may not help your actual work. Compare both over similar typing tasks.
- Give yourself time to adapt. Practice and touch-typing technique remain important; the cited studies do not establish that keyboard hardware alone creates a durable long-term improvement in typing skill.
