Yes. A Mac mini can run AI models locally using apps such as Ollama and LM Studio, or Apple’s developer-focused MLX tools. How well it works depends on the Mac mini’s unified memory, the model and its quantization, the context length, and what else is using the computer. “Local” means inference runs on the Mac; it does not mean every AI feature or every step in an app’s workflow is offline.
What “running an AI model locally” means
Local inference is when the Mac itself processes a prompt with a model stored on or loaded onto the computer. You can still need an internet connection to download a model, get updates, use web search, or connect to remote tools. Some AI features send requests to a cloud service instead, so check what a specific app or feature does before treating it as private or offline.
Apple distinguishes its on-device Foundation Models from separate server models hosted through Private Cloud Compute. That distinction applies to Apple’s model family; it does not make Apple’s models interchangeable with open models you download into Ollama or LM Studio. Apple’s 2026 Foundation Models research describes a particular on-device architecture, while its 2025 technical report describes an earlier generation. Neither should be treated as a complete description of every AI feature available on a Mac.
How much memory does a Mac mini have for local AI?
Unified memory is the first practical constraint to check. It is shared by macOS, applications, and the model workload, so the full installed capacity is not available exclusively for model weights. More memory can give you room for larger models or longer contexts, but memory capacity alone does not establish a particular model’s speed or suitability.

| Mac mini configuration | Unified memory listed | Memory bandwidth listed |
|---|---|---|
| M6 | Up to 32GB | Up to 170GB/s |
| M5 Pro | Up to 64GB | 307GB/s |
| M4 (2024) | 16GB base; configurable to 24GB or 32GB | 120GB/s for the listed M4 specification |
| M4 Pro (2024) | 24GB base; configurable to 48GB or 64GB | Not stated in Apple’s cited 2024 specifications |
The M6 and M5 Pro figures are from Apple’s current Mac mini product page; the M4 and M4 Pro configurations are from Apple’s 2024 Mac mini specifications. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent performance tests. Apple says M5 Pro can support Thunderbolt-connected Mac mini clusters for larger local AI models, but that product positioning is not a guarantee that an arbitrary model will run well on a particular setup.
What affects model size and responsiveness?
Installed memory is only a starting point. A model’s file format and quantization affect its memory footprint; the context length and concurrent workload affect how much additional memory it needs. Quantization reduces model precision and can make a model more practical to run, but it involves tradeoffs. A smaller quantized model may be more usable interactively than a larger model that leaves little room for the rest of the system.

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Model and quantization: Check the specific model file and the runtime’s current requirements rather than relying on a parameter-count rule of thumb.
- Context length: Longer conversations or documents can require more memory than a short prompt.
- Other work: macOS and open applications share unified memory with the model.
- Speed: Chip, memory bandwidth, model, runtime, and workload all matter. Apple’s specifications do not provide a universal generation-speed figure for third-party models.
There is no dependable “this Mac mini runs models up to X billion parameters” answer that applies to every model and usage pattern. Check the current model and application documentation for compatibility, memory needs, and supported context settings, then leave headroom for the system.
Which software can run models on a Mac mini?
Ollama and LM Studio
Apple names Ollama and LM Studio among the applications for Mac mini AI use. They are user-facing options to investigate for downloading and running supported local models. Their supported model formats and compatibility can change, so consult the current documentation for the app and the model you intend to use.

MLX and MLX-LM
MLX is Apple’s open-source array framework for Apple silicon. For developers and technically minded users, MLX-LM supports loading, running, quantizing, and fine-tuning language models. Apple’s WWDC26 local-agent session describes a stack with MLX for computation, MLX-LM for model work, MLX-LM Server, and an agent layer that can include Ollama, LM Studio, and vLLM. This is a developer-oriented route, not a promise that every model or agent will work without configuration.
Core AI for app developers
Apple’s Core AI framework provides a Swift API for developers to load and run models on device in their own apps. Apple describes it as having “zero server dependencies and zero token costs.” That describes the framework’s on-device execution path; Core AI is not a one-click consumer catalog for arbitrary downloadable models.

How to choose a Mac mini for local AI
Start with the model and workflow you actually want, then compare configurations. If you already own an M4 or M4 Pro, assess its exact memory capacity before assuming an upgrade is necessary. If you are buying, the listed M5 Pro offers a higher memory ceiling than M6, while the M6 has its own bandwidth specification; those numbers alone do not establish which will be faster for a particular model.
- Identify the model and runtime. Confirm the exact model file, quantization, supported format, and current memory guidance in the application’s documentation.
- Estimate the whole workload. Account for context length and other apps, not just model weights.
- Compare memory first. Use the Mac’s installed unified-memory capacity as a system-wide pool, not as model-only capacity.
- Check the workflow’s network behavior. Confirm whether prompts are processed on the Mac or sent to a cloud service, and whether remote tools or web features are enabled.
- Set expectations for speed. Treat performance as model- and workload-specific; do not infer a tokens-per-second result from Apple’s memory or bandwidth specifications.
An external drive can provide space for model files, but storage does not add unified memory or make a model that exceeds available memory runnable. Use extra storage only if you need the capacity.
