A Linux swap file can help a low-RAM PC finish work that might otherwise fail under memory pressure, but it does not add physical RAM or make the machine faster. Linux can move less-active memory pages to storage; because storage is much slower than RAM, the computer may become sluggish if it has to swap constantly. Whether that trade-off makes an older PC useful again depends on the workload and how often it runs out of memory.

What a swap file does

Swap is storage Linux can use as backing space for memory pages that are not currently active. A swap file is one way to provide that space; a swap partition is another. The ArchWiki’s Swap guide describes swap as potentially useful when installed RAM is below what the programs you want to run need, and notes that avoiding out-of-memory failures can prevent the kernel from killing processes.

That extra capacity comes with a latency cost. Reading and writing pages on storage is significantly slower than accessing them in RAM. Swap can improve the chance that a task completes, but a computer under sustained memory pressure may respond slowly while it moves data back and forth.

Check whether Linux is already using swap

Before creating anything, inspect the system’s current configuration. ArchWiki recommends these commands:

  • swapon --show lists active swap areas.
  • free -h shows memory and swap totals in human-readable units.

If swap is already active, check its size and usage alongside the programs that cause the slowdown. A swap file is not automatically the right fix for every performance problem; the commands show whether swap exists, not whether it is the cause of a particular issue.

Set up a swap file carefully

There is no single safe file-creation command for every Linux distribution and filesystem. First identify your distribution, the filesystem where the file would live, and whether you need swap for ordinary memory pressure or for hibernation. Follow the current instructions for that distribution and filesystem rather than assuming a method that works on one system is universal.

  1. Check the destination. Make sure the intended path does not already contain a file you need. Do not run a creation command that could overwrite an existing path.
  2. Follow filesystem-specific creation guidance. The Ubuntu Bionic swapon manual warns against swap files with holes and documents filesystem and version limitations. That older manual is not a universal statement about current systems: consult your distribution’s current guidance before choosing a creation method.
  3. Initialize the file as swap. The Ubuntu Noble mkswap(8) manual says, “mkswap sets up a Linux swap area on a device or in a file.” The utility prepares the area; it does not by itself activate it.
  4. Activate and verify it. Use the distribution’s documented procedure to enable the prepared area with swapon, then check the result with swapon --show and free -h. The Linux man-pages swapon(2) documentation also states that swap areas must be prepared with mkswap.

The exact file size depends on the workload, installed RAM, available storage, filesystem, and whether hibernation is required. Those variables do not support one blanket size recommendation.

Swap for memory pressure is not hibernation setup

Enabling swap for ordinary memory pressure does not automatically configure suspend-to-disk. Resuming from hibernation with a swap file requires additional setup, including telling the boot process where the resume data is located; the required steps depend on the distribution and its boot configuration. The Linux kernel’s Using swap files with software suspend documentation covers these considerations. Follow the distribution’s hibernation instructions for swap sizing and boot-image configuration rather than treating swapon alone as sufficient.

Compare the practical options

Option Capacity Responsiveness under memory pressure Setup complexity Hibernation compatibility
Physical RAM upgrade Increases actual memory capacity, where the hardware permits. Provides memory in RAM rather than relying on slower disk-backed swap. Requires compatible hardware and installation. Does not by itself configure hibernation; follow distribution guidance.
Disk-backed swap file Uses storage for additional memory backing capacity; does not add physical RAM. Slower than RAM; sustained swapping can make the computer sluggish. Requires filesystem-appropriate creation, initialization, activation, and possibly persistent configuration. Possible, but resuming from a swap file needs additional location and boot setup.
zswap Caches pages being swapped out in compressed RAM; it is not a physical RAM upgrade. May reduce storage I/O, at the cost of CPU cycles; results depend on workload and configuration. Requires configuration appropriate to the system. Do not assume it configures hibernation; follow distribution-specific instructions.

The Linux kernel documentation calls zswap “a lightweight compressed cache for swap pages” and explains the trade-off between CPU work and swap I/O in its zswap guide. Compression may help in some circumstances, but it is not a guaranteed performance improvement.

When swap may help—and when it may not

  • It may help when a workload occasionally exceeds available RAM. Moving less-active pages to storage can give the system room to continue and may reduce the chance that a process is killed for lack of memory.
  • It may not make a machine feel responsive under sustained pressure. If the system repeatedly needs pages that are on storage, the slower access can dominate the experience.
  • It cannot fix every slowdown. Check actual memory and swap use before attributing poor performance to insufficient RAM.
  • It is not a substitute for physical RAM in every workload. If hardware supports an upgrade, that adds actual memory capacity; whether it is worthwhile depends on the machine and your needs.

There is no established general figure for how many PCs swap has “saved,” how much faster a system becomes, or how many years of use it adds. The outcome depends on the specific machine and workload, so treat swap as a way to improve the odds of completing some memory-heavy tasks—not as a promise of a particular speed or lifespan.
