Yes. A 512MB GeForce 8800 GT can run the original Crysis, but smooth play depends on resolution and settings: expect to lower demanding options such as shaders, objects, and shadows rather than assume High quality will be playable. Two 8800 GT cards in SLI improved average frame rates in some tests at moderate resolutions, but the gains varied, and SLI did not guarantee smooth performance.

What the 8800 GT performance numbers mean

The available figures are from period tests of the original Crysis, not a guarantee for every PC or a direct measure of every level in single-player. Average FPS can conceal dips and uneven frame pacing, so use the results to compare the tested configurations—not as a promise of consistently smooth gameplay.

GameSpot’s Sarju Shah published a hardware guide on November 13, 2007. It used the game’s built-in GPU and CPU benchmarks, averaging three runs per result. The test matrix included a GeForce 8800 GT 512MB, Windows XP, Windows Vista 32-bit and 64-bit, and NVIDIA ForceWare 169.04 and 169.09. GameSpot used ForceWare 169.04 for most NVIDIA cards and 169.09 for its SLI setup; it warned that a performance-affecting executable/driver behavior difference between the versions complicates exact comparisons.

One 8800 GT versus two in SLI

ComputerBase’s Direct3D 10 Crysis benchmark reported these average frame rates. The figures compare the cards at the same listed resolution and filtering, but do not establish performance under every patch, API, driver, or PC configuration.

2560×1600 1×AA / 16×AF 3.1 fps average 2.5 fps average

At 1280×1024 and 1600×1200, the SLI configuration raised the reported average. At 2560×1600, it scored lower than the single card, and both results are far below what most players would consider playable. This is why there is no reliable universal SLI multiplier: scaling depends on the workload and software setup.

A separate TechSpot test by Steven Walton illustrates the sensitivity to settings and patch. At 1440×900 with DirectX 9 and Medium quality, the reported 8800 GT SLI average rose from 40.4 fps to 45.4 fps after patch 1.1. At 1680×1050, patch 1.1 improved SLI more substantially; at 1920×1200 in that low-quality comparison, patched SLI was still slower than single-card configurations. Those results should not be combined with ComputerBase’s Direct3D 10 figures as if they were one controlled test.

Which settings to lower first

GameSpot identified shader, object, and shadow quality as settings with major performance effects. For a practical starting point, lower those before sacrificing every other visual setting. Medium shadows are a useful compromise; Low disables shadows.

  • Shaders: Reduce quality if performance is poor. GameSpot’s guide identifies shader quality as a major performance factor.
  • Objects: Lower object quality next if frame rates remain low; it is also among the settings GameSpot singled out.
  • Shadows: Try Medium as a compromise. Low turns shadows off, while higher shadow quality costs performance.
  • Resolution and anti-aliasing: Reduce resolution and avoid assuming that higher resolutions or extra image-quality settings will be practical. The ComputerBase results show severe performance loss at 2560×1600 even without a large anti-aliasing load.

High quality at high resolution is especially ambitious for this generation. GameSpot reported that even a GeForce 8800 GTX barely managed a playable level in its GPU benchmark at 1600×1200 with High quality, and said a dual-card setup would likely be needed to run well at high resolution with good image quality. That is a warning about the demands of the game, not evidence that two 8800 GTs will match an 8800 GTX or deliver a particular frame rate.

CPU, Windows, and driver considerations

In GameSpot’s period tests, Crysis benefited from at least two CPU cores; single-core processors lagged considerably. Moving from dual-core to quad-core did not add much in those tests. The guide also found Windows XP performed best among the tested Windows XP and Vista variants. These are findings from the 2007 test environment, not claims about current operating-system support or performance on a modern PC.

Driver version matters when interpreting old results. GameSpot used different ForceWare versions for its usual NVIDIA tests and its SLI setup, and noted that an executable/driver behavior difference affected performance. Therefore, its figures are historical benchmarks rather than a clean apples-to-apples estimate for every single-card and SLI pairing.

Is 8800 GT SLI worth it for Crysis?

For a period build or restoration, SLI could provide a meaningful average-FPS increase at moderate GPU-bound resolutions, as the ComputerBase figures demonstrate. But it is not a dependable route to a fixed target such as 60 fps: results vary with resolution, API, patch, driver, and settings, and one high-resolution test regressed. Average FPS alone also cannot establish smooth single-player play.

If you are assembling a legacy system, the relevant card is the GeForce 8800 GT 512MB PCIe model. It is a used, legacy component; current listing availability is unverified. For an existing PC, first test one card at a lower resolution with shaders, objects, and shadows reduced, then consider SLI only if the rest of the system and the specific game setup support it.
