Yes, a Chromebook can be exposed to malware and online threats, but ChromeOS’s automatic updates, verified boot and app sandboxing reduce the risk of many traditional virus infections. If you see pop-ups or redirects, first check whether they come from a website notification or browser extension; a warning page claiming your Chromebook is infected does not prove that the system is.

How ChromeOS protects a Chromebook—and what it cannot prevent

ChromeOS uses several security layers. Google says Chromebook devices receive 10 years of automatic updates from the platform’s release date. Those updates cover ChromeOS, the browser and hardware components. The 10-year period is tied to the platform release date, not necessarily the day you bought your Chromebook, so check your device’s update schedule rather than estimating support from its purchase date.

Verified boot checks the system at startup

Verified boot checks the integrity of the system when the Chromebook starts. Google says it remains available after automatic updates stop and can repair a system if tampering or corruption is detected. It does not replace security updates: an out-of-support device no longer receives new ChromeOS and browser security fixes.

Sandboxing limits what apps can reach

ChromeOS normally runs apps in sandboxes, which limit how much they can affect other parts of the device. Google’s Linux guidance makes an important distinction: all Linux apps run inside the same sandbox. A harmful Linux app may therefore affect other Linux apps and files shared with that Linux environment. Google says it cannot affect the rest of the Chromebook.

Security features are not protection from every online threat

These controls reduce the impact of many traditional desktop-malware scenarios, but they do not make users immune to phishing, stolen passwords, malicious websites, unsafe downloads, abusive extensions or permissions granted too broadly. Chrome Safe Browsing can warn about dangerous downloads. In managed environments, Chrome policies can also block dangerous files or send suspicious downloads to Google for malware scanning.

What to do if your Chromebook shows pop-ups or redirects

Start by identifying where the warning appears. A web page that says the Chromebook is infected may be scareware designed to make you click, call a number or download something; the message alone is not evidence of a system infection.

  1. Record what is happening. Note the exact message and whether it appears on a website, as a browser notification, or in a new tab or redirect. Do not click the warning, call a number shown on it, or download a tool it recommends.
  2. Stop interacting with suspicious pages and downloads. Close the page or tab if you can do so safely. Treat a Safe Browsing warning as a reason to stop, not as a prompt to disable security checks and continue.
  3. Check browser notifications and extensions. Remove permissions, extensions or installed apps you do not recognize or no longer need. Be cautious about granting an extension access to websites or files when there is no clear reason for it.
  4. Install available ChromeOS updates. Open Settings → About ChromeOS, check for an update, install it if available, and restart the Chromebook.
  5. Check whether the device is still supported. Open Settings → About ChromeOS → Additional details → Update schedule. If the Chromebook has reached its final software update, it no longer receives ChromeOS and browser security updates.
  6. Secure your account if you entered credentials. From a known-clean device, change the Google Account password if you may have typed it into a phishing page. Review account security and two-step verification. A password change addresses possible account theft; it does not establish that ChromeOS itself was infected.
  7. Escalate only if the problem persists. Back up local files before using Powerwash or recovery. Recovery is a last resort because it permanently erases the Chromebook’s internal storage.

How to remove malware or unwanted software from a Chromebook

There is no single cleanup step for every symptom. A persistent browser notification, an unwanted extension, a compromised Google Account and a damaged ChromeOS installation are different problems, so start with the item that matches what you observed.

Remove an unwanted extension, app or permission

Review browser extensions, installed apps and their permissions. Remove anything unfamiliar, unnecessary or installed around the time the issue began. Avoid broad access to files or websites unless the app has a clear need for it. If the problem involves Linux software, remember that Linux apps share one sandbox and can access files shared with that Linux environment.

Update ChromeOS and restart

Use Settings → About ChromeOS to check for updates. Install any available update and restart. Automatic updates are a core part of ChromeOS security, so a device that has not installed an available update should be brought up to date before you judge whether the problem remains.

Use Powerwash or recovery only after backing up

If the issue persists after reviewing extensions, apps and permissions and installing available updates, consider a reset or ChromeOS recovery. Back up local files first. Google’s recovery guidance recommends a USB 2.0 drive with at least 4 GB of capacity and warns that recovery permanently erases internal storage. Recovery media is therefore a last-resort repair tool, not a first response to a suspicious pop-up.

Can a Linux app infect ChromeOS?

Google says Linux apps run in a shared Linux sandbox, while the rest of the Chromebook is isolated from that environment. That means a harmful Linux app can potentially affect other Linux apps and files shared with Linux, but Google’s documentation says it cannot affect the rest of the Chromebook. Treat Linux apps as a shared environment: install only software you trust, and be thoughtful about which files you make available to Linux.

Is a Chromebook safe after automatic updates stop?

It retains verified boot, which Google says can repair a tampered system, but it no longer receives new ChromeOS and browser security updates. Verified boot and current security updates address different risks; the former does not make an unsupported browser or operating system current.

Check the device’s update schedule

Use Settings → About ChromeOS → Additional details → Update schedule to see the device’s support status. Google says older Chromebooks eventually stop receiving software updates and identifies upgrading to a newer Chromebook as one option when support ends.

Consider extended updates on eligible older devices

Eligible Chromebooks released before 2021 may be able to opt into extended updates. Google says opting in removes Android apps and the Google Play Store to maintain security, performance and stability. Before choosing this option, consider whether you need Android apps, check the device’s eligibility, and account for whether a school or employer manages the Chromebook.

  • Update coverage: Is the Chromebook still receiving ChromeOS and browser security updates?
  • Android app needs: Would losing Google Play Store and Android apps make extended updates unsuitable?
  • Management: Is the device controlled by a school or employer, which may affect available settings and choices?

What to do if you entered your Google password on a suspicious page

Use a known-clean device to change the Google Account password and review account security, including two-step verification. This protects against possible credential theft. Do not assume that a password exposure means the Chromebook’s operating system is infected, and do not use a reset as a substitute for securing the account.
