Yes—but the infection route described by security authorities usually requires more than viewing a fake CAPTCHA or clicking its checkbox. The scam tries to persuade you to paste and run a command, or open a malicious download. Real CAPTCHA challenges use image- or text-based tasks; they do not ask you to run commands on your computer.
How a fake CAPTCHA can lead to malware
A fake verification page may appear on a malicious or compromised website, in an advertisement, or after a phishing message. It can imitate a familiar human-verification service and claim you need to complete a “security verification.” The telltale difference is what it asks you to do next.
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) describes a scam prompt that tells people to press Windows + R, then Ctrl + V, then Enter. The page may have copied a command to the clipboard; following those steps pastes and executes it. Microsoft has documented a related ClickFix tactic in which a page copies a malicious PowerShell command and tells the visitor to paste it into Windows Terminal or PowerShell.
Running the command can download malware. Microsoft reports that ClickFix campaigns have delivered information stealers, remote-access tools, loaders, and rootkits. An information stealer may expose email credentials, banking credentials, or other accessible information. The exact result depends on the campaign and the device; the presence of a convincing CAPTCHA does not make the command safe.

What a real CAPTCHA will—and will not—ask you to do
- Normal challenge: identify images, enter text, or complete another on-page task.
- Red flag: instructions to open Windows Run, Terminal, PowerShell, or Command Prompt and paste or run text.
- Another red flag: a prompt to download a file as part of proving you are human.
The FTC puts it plainly: “Real CAPTCHAs won’t ask you to run commands on your device.” A page can copy the look of a verification service, so judge it by the action it demands rather than its logo or appearance.
Could you be infected just by seeing the page or clicking its checkbox?
Not necessarily. The official guidance cited here describes command execution or opening a malicious download as the documented infection route; it does not establish that every visit or checkbox click installs malware. If you only saw the page or clicked its fake checkbox, close the tab, do not paste or run anything, and do not open a file it offers. If a download started or you executed a command, follow the response steps below.

What to do if you pasted or ran the command
- Disconnect the affected device from the internet. Turn off Wi-Fi or unplug the network connection to reduce ongoing communication while you respond.
- Run a security scan. Use active, current antimalware protection. Microsoft advises keeping protection enabled and software up to date; if this is a workplace device or you suspect an active compromise, contact your organization’s IT or security team.
- Use a different device to secure accounts. Change passwords and enable two-factor authentication from a device you believe is clean, prioritizing email and financial accounts.
- Contact your financial institution if you disclosed payment details. Microsoft’s tech-support scam guidance recommends contacting the relevant bank or card provider when financial information was shared.
- Report the incident. In the United States, report a suspected scam to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. Microsoft also accepts reports about tech-support scams and unsafe websites.
If you only downloaded a suspicious file but did not open it, do not open it now. Delete it if you can do so safely, then scan the device. If the file was opened or you are unsure what the command did, treat the device as potentially compromised.
How to avoid fake verification prompts
- Never paste website-provided text into Run, Terminal, PowerShell, or Command Prompt as a verification step.
- Be cautious with unexpected links and attachments, and install software only from reputable providers.
- Keep your operating system and applications updated, and maintain active antimalware protection.
- If a verification page demands a command or download, close it instead of trying to complete the steps.
Microsoft’s August 2025 analysis reported observing ClickFix campaigns targeting “thousands of enterprise and end-user devices globally every day.” That figure describes Microsoft’s observation of campaign activity, not a consumer prevalence estimate or a count of unique infections. The FTC does not provide a numerical estimate of how many consumers are affected.

Frequently asked questions
Is “Windows + R, Ctrl + V, Enter” a legitimate CAPTCHA step?
No. Those keys open Windows Run, paste clipboard contents, and submit the command. The FTC identifies this sequence as a CAPTCHA scam tactic, not a legitimate human-verification task.
What if the page says it is Cloudflare or another known service?
A familiar name or design is not proof that the instructions are legitimate. Microsoft described a TerminalFix campaign using a fake Cloudflare Turnstile overlay to persuade visitors to run a PowerShell command. Do not run a command supplied by a webpage, whatever service it imitates.
