Yes—but not in the way the headline suggests. A research prototype reported in 2017 detects light from an illuminated medical instrument inside the body, such as an endoscope, and estimates where the light source is. It does not produce a general image of organs or other anatomy through skin.
What does the camera see?
It is designed to locate an internal light source, particularly the illuminated tip of an endoscope or another inserted medical device. The potential benefit is helping clinicians track a device as they guide it through the body. The camera does not show the surrounding anatomy, and the reported result should not be confused with a photograph of organs through tissue.
How can it detect light through tissue?
Tissue scatters light, so photons from an internal source usually take indirect, lengthened paths before reaching the outside. The prototype uses a sensitive array of single-photon detectors to record when individual photons arrive. Relatively direct photons tend to arrive earlier than photons that have scattered along longer routes. By distinguishing earlier arrivals from later scattered light, the system can estimate the location of the source.
What did the prototype demonstrate?
The University of Edinburgh reported in 2017 that demonstrations located a point light source through tissue approximately 20 cm thick under normal lighting conditions. That is a specific point-source detection result—not evidence that the camera can form clear images of all anatomy through 20 cm of tissue. The report does not establish that it replaces X-rays, CT, MRI, or endoscopy.

Who developed it, and what was the goal?
The work involved researchers at the University of Edinburgh and Heriot-Watt University and was part of the Proteus Interdisciplinary Research Collaboration, focused on technologies for diagnosing and treating lung disease. The University of Edinburgh said the work was funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council. The associated release identifies the study as published in Biomedical Optics Express (DOI 10.1364/BOE.8.004077).
The researchers described bedside use as a development goal: helping clinicians locate inserted devices and potentially visualize both a device’s tip and length. That was an aim for further development, not a report of routine clinical use.
