1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUsually, a Blu-ray player can play DVDs and CDs, but the exact formats depend on the model. A standard Blu-ray player cannot play a 4K UHD Blu-ray disc; you need an Ultra HD Blu-ray player for that. UHD players play standard Blu-ray discs and most also play DVDs, but check the specific model for CD support.
Can a Blu-ray player play DVDs?
Often, yes. Blu-ray players commonly support DVDs, but DVD playback is not guaranteed for every model or every DVD variant. ENERGY STAR advises checking a player’s format capability rather than assuming it supports every disc type: ENERGY STAR consumer guidance.
Before relying on a player for a particular DVD, look at its specifications or manual for DVD support and any recordable or rewritable formats you use.
Can a Blu-ray player play CDs?
Some models can play audio CDs, but CD support is model-dependent. Check the player’s format list for “audio CD” specifically, and confirm support for any recordable or rewritable CD variants you need. ENERGY STAR notes that a Blu-ray player may also function as a CD player, not that all models do.

Can a Blu-ray player play 4K UHD discs?
No—not if it is a standard Blu-ray player. The Blu-ray Disc Association states: “Ultra HD Blu-ray Discs cannot be played in a standard Blu-ray Disc player.” An Ultra HD Blu-ray player is required for UHD discs. People often say “4K Blu-ray” to mean Ultra HD Blu-ray, but it is a different disc format from standard Blu-ray.
UHD players play standard Blu-ray content, and most also play DVDs, according to the Blu-ray Disc Association compatibility FAQ. Confirm CD support separately in the specifications for the UHD player you are considering.

Does 4K upscaling mean a player can read UHD discs?
No. “4K upscaling” describes processing that can increase the output resolution of video from a supported lower-resolution source. It does not make a standard Blu-ray player compatible with Ultra HD Blu-ray discs. To play a UHD disc, the player’s specifications must explicitly identify Ultra HD Blu-ray support.
What do you need for UHD playback on a 4K TV?
Disc compatibility is only the first part of the setup: the player, disc, TV, and connection must also support the output you want. Ultra HD Blu-ray supports resolutions up to 3840 × 2160 pixels, HDR, and frame rates up to 60 fps, according to the Blu-ray Disc Association. Those are format capabilities, not a promise that every setup will display them.

Connection requirements vary by model. For example, Philips says its BDP7303/F7 requires a 4K TV connected with an HDMI cable that supports a 4K signal to play at maximum resolution. With a 720p or 1080p TV, that model downscales output to the TV’s maximum resolution. This is a model-specific example; check the instructions for your player and TV.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to check a player’s disc compatibility
- Check for UHD disc support. The specifications should explicitly say “Ultra HD Blu-ray” or “4K UHD Blu-ray.” “4K upscaling” alone is not enough.
- Check DVD and CD formats. Look for DVD and audio CD support, plus any recordable or rewritable variants you use.
- Check the display connection. Confirm the player’s output-resolution requirements and the TV and HDMI connection capabilities needed for your desired picture.
If you own UHD movie discs, choose an Ultra HD Blu-ray player and verify its DVD and CD support against the exact model’s specification list. A 4K-capable HDMI cable may be needed for a compatible player-and-TV setup, but a cable cannot make a standard Blu-ray player read UHD discs.
