Yes, a $99 GPS watch can cover essential marathon-training tasks—but the available evidence does not show that it handles them better than Garmin. The Amazfit Active 2 is a current example listed at $99 in the US by TechRadar’s 2026 guide. It offers GPS and training features, but the cited review does not give its battery life while recording GPS, and it was not tested head-to-head with a Garmin through marathon training. Compare the exact models and the features your training requires, not price alone.
What a $99 watch can—and cannot—be expected to do
For marathon preparation, a watch’s practical baseline is reliable GPS pace and distance, support for the workouts you plan to follow, and enough recording time for your longest runs and race day. The Amazfit Active 2 is one budget example: TechRadar’s 2026 guide lists it at $99 in the US, with GPS, workout features, up to 10 days of battery life, and 5ATM water resistance. The guide also reports reviewer testing of its GPS and heart rate. The 10-day battery figure is not identified as GPS-recording runtime. TechRadar’s 2026 running-watch guide
That makes the Active 2 a plausible candidate for essential training use, not a proven Garmin substitute for every runner. The cited material does not establish its GPS-mode battery duration or show how it compares with Garmin over a marathon training cycle.

| Battery information | Up to 10 days, as reported by TechRadar; the cited passage does not specify GPS-mode runtime. Source | Up to 11 days in smartwatch mode, up to 19 hours in GPS-only GNSS mode, or up to 17 hours in all-systems GNSS mode, according to Garmin Singapore. Source |

Source | Built-in GPS, pace and distance, daily suggested workouts that adapt to performance and recovery, training effect, recovery time, and a marathon race predictor. Garmin describes Garmin Coach plans for 5K, 10K, and half-marathon distances—not a marathon plan. Source |
Smartwatch battery life and GPS recording time answer different questions. The Active 2’s reported “up to 10 days” should not be treated as 10 days of continuous GPS use. For a long run or marathon, look specifically for GPS-mode runtime and leave a margin for your expected time on course.
What the available accuracy tests actually show
TechRadar reports that its Active 2 testing found GPS accuracy comparable to an Apple Watch Ultra 2 and a heart-rate reading one beat per minute off in the tested comparison. Those are the publication’s reviewer findings, not a direct comparison with the Forerunner 165 or proof of consistent results across routes and conditions. TechRadar’s testing notes

GPS performance can vary with satellite position, surroundings, and device design. A 2022 paper by Joe Dumas examined three Garmin generations with one runner repeating one route; in that narrow study, the Forerunner 45S was less accurate in distance trueness and precision than the two older Garmin models tested. The study did not test Amazfit and does not establish a brand-wide ranking. Joe Dumas, 2022 study

Choose based on your training, not the logo
Before buying, check the exact watch against the demands of your own plan and routes:
- Long-run and race battery: Find the stated GPS-mode runtime, not only smartwatch-mode days. The Active 2’s cited 10-day figure does not answer this question.
- Route conditions: Consider where you run—open roads, tree cover, tall buildings, or repeated track laps can affect GPS measurements. Brand and price alone do not guarantee accuracy.
- Workout structure: Verify that the watch can create or follow the intervals, pace targets, or scheduled sessions you actually use. Garmin lists adaptive daily suggested workouts on the Forerunner 165; the cited Active 2 passage describes workout features without detailing an equivalent marathon-plan function.
- Training guidance: Decide whether training effect, recovery time, race prediction, or a particular coaching plan matters to you. The Forerunner 165 lists a marathon race predictor, while its named Garmin Coach plans are for 5K, 10K, and half-marathon distances.
- Heart-rate needs and run-time readability: If you train to heart-rate zones, consider how you will view and interpret that data while moving, and whether wrist-based readings meet your needs.
- Current price and availability: Treat the Active 2’s $99 as the US price reported in TechRadar’s 2026 guide, not a guaranteed price today.
Verdict: when the $99 option makes sense
The Amazfit Active 2 is worth considering if you want a lower-cost GPS watch for basic pace, distance, and workout use, and if its actual GPS battery runtime suits your longest sessions. The Garmin Forerunner 165 has more clearly documented running and recovery features in Garmin’s product information, including a marathon race predictor and specified GPS-mode battery figures. The evidence here is not enough to say the Active 2 is better than Garmin—or that it matches Garmin across a complete marathon build. Choose the model whose verified capabilities fit your plan, routes, and run duration.
