The Cambridge Audio L/R S is a compact powered stereo pair for listeners who want several wired source options and Bluetooth without buying a separate amplifier. It is best suited to a desk, shelf, or smaller room where USB-C, optical, RCA, or Bluetooth connectivity matters more than network streaming or HDMI. Its $549 US list price makes the question of sound preference and local alternatives important: reviewers praise its detail and stereo presentation, but disagree about its tonal balance.

What the Cambridge Audio L/R S is—and who it suits

Cambridge Audio describes the L/R S as “A matched active stereo loudspeaker pair for smaller spaces – no external amplifier required.” Each speaker has its own amplification, so you connect a source directly rather than adding a separate stereo amplifier. The speakers themselves, however, connect to each other with a cable; this is not a fully wireless stereo pair.

The L/R S makes sense if you want a relatively small two-speaker setup for a computer, television or other wired source, and you value having several input choices in one system. It is less suitable if you expect built-in network streaming, HDMI ARC, or a phono stage for a turntable without additional equipment.

Inputs, outputs, and wireless features

Cambridge Audio lists Bluetooth, RCA stereo auxiliary, USB-C audio, and optical TOSLINK inputs, plus an RCA subwoofer output. Bluetooth supports SBC, AAC, aptX, and aptX HD codecs. The manufacturer lists no network capability and no HDMI input on the L/R S product page.

Connection What it is useful for
Bluetooth (SBC, AAC, aptX, aptX HD) Wireless playback from a compatible phone, tablet, or computer.
USB-C audio A wired digital connection from a compatible computer or other source.
Optical TOSLINK A digital connection commonly used with televisions and other audio sources.
RCA stereo auxiliary An analogue stereo connection for a source with RCA line outputs.
RCA subwoofer output A connection for an external subwoofer with a compatible RCA input.

The lack of HDMI means the L/R S cannot use HDMI ARC for a direct TV audio connection. What Hi-Fi? also notes that it has no built-in phono stage, so a turntable that needs one requires an external phono preamp or another suitable component in the signal chain. Those omissions matter more than the broad input count if your main source is a television with HDMI-only audio output or a turntable without a built-in phono stage.

Setup and desk placement

The supplied speaker-link cable joins the two speakers. Cambridge Audio lists a 2m cable in the box and sells an optional 5m link cable for a wider separation. Tom’s Guide reports that USB-C, RCA, and optical source cables are not included; the official product page and manual identify the speaker link cable but do not establish that those source cables are supplied. Check the box contents for your regional listing and make sure you have the cable needed for your chosen source.

For desktop listening, Cambridge Audio offers angled desk stands separately. The company says they raise and tilt the speakers toward the listener. They are an optional placement accessory, not a requirement for using the speakers.

Sound: reviewers hear different strengths and trade-offs

Listening impressions are subjective, and the published reviews do not describe one identical tonal balance. TechRadar praises a detailed, dynamic presentation and flexible inputs, but says the low end is too prominent. What Hi-Fi? calls the sound even-toned, refined, and easy to listen to, while wishing for more energy, precision, and insight. Tom’s Guide reports clear, balanced sound and strong stereo imaging, but also lists a lack of “oomph” as a drawback.

These descriptions point to different priorities rather than a single objective verdict. If you prefer a weightier bass presentation, TechRadar’s criticism is worth considering; if you want more drive or a sharper sense of detail, What Hi-Fi?’s reservations may carry more weight. Tom’s Guide’s praise for imaging may appeal if you value the separation and placement of sounds in a stereo setup. None of these reviews is a laboratory measurement, so use them as informed listening opinions, not a guarantee of how the pair will sound in your room.

Specifications and price

  • For desk size and placement: Check each pair’s dimensions and whether it can be aimed comfortably at your listening position. The L/R S is marketed for smaller spaces and has optional angled stands.
  • For source compatibility: Confirm whether your setup needs USB-C, optical, RCA, HDMI ARC, or a built-in phono stage. The L/R S offers USB-C, optical, and RCA, but not HDMI input or a phono stage.
  • For streaming: The L/R S offers Bluetooth but not network streaming. Cambridge Audio’s 2026 range announcement positions L/R M and L/R X as StreamMagic-powered models; that feature should not be assumed for the S.
  • For sound: Compare attributed listening impressions with your own tonal preferences. Reviewers differ on whether the L/R S sounds too bass-heavy, balanced, or short on energy and precision.
  • For total cost: Check local pair prices, finish premiums, required source cables, and any separate accessories before comparing offers.

Should you buy the Cambridge Audio L/R S?

Consider the L/R S if you want compact active speakers with Bluetooth plus a useful selection of wired inputs, and your sources do not require HDMI ARC or network streaming. Its integrated amplification keeps the system simple, while the wired link between speakers and optional desk stands shape how it fits into a desktop or shelf setup.

At the listed US price of $549 per pair, its value depends on whether those connections and compact format match your needs—and whether its sound suits your taste. Compare the Ruark Audio MR1 Mk3 and Onkyo GX-30ARC locally, especially if you need HDMI ARC or a phono stage, and listen if possible before choosing based on the differing review impressions.
