C3 AI announced a 26% reduction in its global workforce in February 2026 as part of a restructuring intended to cut costs, reduce cash burn and improve operating efficiency. Then-CEO Stephen Ehikian also said the company was using agentic AI to raise productivity. That makes AI part of management’s explanation, but available disclosures do not establish that AI caused the job cuts or quantify how many roles were eliminated because of it.
What C3 AI announced
C3 AI’s board approved a comprehensive restructuring plan on February 24, 2026. The company’s February 25 Form 8-K disclosed a 26% reduction in its global workforce and said the workforce actions had been substantially completed. The filing did not provide a precise headcount for the reduction.
The plan also targeted a 30% reduction in annualized non-employee costs. That is a separate cost target—not an additional workforce reduction—and the initial announcement described it as a target rather than a completed result.
Why the company said it was restructuring
C3 AI described the restructuring as a way to improve operating efficiency, reduce cash burn and strengthen its long-term financial position. Its filings outlined a broader operating reset, rather than a workforce change alone:

- Flatten the sales organization and focus selling on large enterprise transformations.
- Prioritize research and development on selected AI and automation applications and sectors, including energy, manufacturing, healthcare and public-sector work such as defense, intelligence and government services.
- Speed product design and delivery.
The company’s Form 10-Q for the quarter ended January 31, 2026 and later filings describe these as management priorities. They do not independently demonstrate that the initiatives will deliver particular savings or growth.
What the then-CEO said about AI
In comments reported by CIO on February 26, 2026, then-CEO Stephen Ehikian said he had restructured product, engineering, sales, marketing and customer services to use agentic AI and increase employee productivity. CIO reported his claim that productivity could rise “in many cases by up to 100 times,” and that sales-operations work was moving “an order of magnitude faster.”

Those are management claims as reported by CIO, not independently measured results. The reviewed company filings explain the restructuring in terms of efficiency, cash burn and financial position; they do not establish how much AI contributed to the workforce reduction. CIO also relayed an analyst’s view that ordinary cost-cutting was part of the explanation.
What later filings said about implementation and cost
C3 AI’s Form 10-Q for the quarter ended July 31, 2026 said the target workforce reduction was completed during fiscal Q1 2027. It said vendor-related cost rationalization was expected to be completed by fiscal Q2 2027.

The company reported approximately $10.8 million in restructuring charges for the quarter ended April 30, 2026, in its Form 10-K for fiscal 2026. It later reported another $0.7 million in restructuring charges for the quarter ended July 31, 2026, primarily related to vendor consolidation, in the July-quarter filing. These charges are reported for distinct periods; they are not measures of employee headcount or proof of realized savings.

Ehikian was CEO when he made the February 2026 comments. C3 AI announced that Thomas M. Siebel resumed the CEO role effective May 8, 2026, while Ehikian continued as president. The company’s May 12, 2026 announcement documents that leadership change.
