Those changes help explain why Bytes #458, published January 28, 2026, called Firefox “cooking again.” But the release does not show that Mozilla reversed its AI strategy: its release notes focus on browser features, while Mozilla’s CEO had described Firefox as evolving into an AI browser with AI features people can turn off.
What’s new in Firefox 147?
Mozilla first offered Firefox 147.0 to Release channel users on January 13, 2026. The release notes cover more than the three web-platform areas highlighted in Bytes; they also list changes including WebGPU support on Apple Silicon devices on supported macOS versions, improved hardware-decoded video playback on supported systems with AMD GPUs, and support for the Safe Browsing V5 protocol.
The notes also describe a progressive rollout of local-network access restrictions for users with Enhanced Tracking Protection set to Strict. Because the rollout is progressive, the restriction may not appear for every eligible user at once.
The three developer-facing changes highlighted by Bytes
| Feature | What it enables |
|---|---|
| Navigation API | Initiating, intercepting, and managing navigation actions in web applications. |
| CSS anchor positioning | Setting an element’s size and position relative to an anchor, useful for interface elements such as menus and popovers. |
| View Transitions | More ways to identify and inspect transitions, including a new CSS selector, a document property, and developer-tools visibility into transition pseudo-elements and associated animations. |
What is the Navigation API in Firefox?
The Navigation API gives web developers a way to initiate, intercept, and manage navigation actions. Mozilla describes it as a successor to earlier platform features such as the History API and window.location. In practice, its role is to provide a more unified way for an application to handle navigation, including routing behavior, rather than relying only on those older mechanisms.
#1 Best Overall
Firefox 147’s support is a browser-platform addition; it does not by itself guarantee that every website or framework uses the API. The release notes establish support, not adoption or performance results.
How do anchor positioning and View Transitions help developers?
CSS anchor positioning
Anchor positioning lets CSS size and place one element in relation to another element designated as its anchor. This can help keep a popover or menu positioned relative to the control that opens it, without having to calculate and update that relationship entirely in application code.
View Transition updates
Firefox 147 adds the :active-view-transition-type selector and exposes the active document transition through Document.activeViewTransition. Developer tools also gained visibility into View Transition pseudo-elements and their associated animations. Together, these additions give developers more ways to work with transition behavior and inspect what is happening during a transition.
Mozilla’s release notes do not provide comparative benchmarks or evidence that one of these changes has a larger measured impact than the others.

The cited statements show a contrast, not a reversal. In a December 16, 2025 post about Mozilla’s direction, CEO Anthony Enzor-DeMeo wrote that “Firefox will remain our anchor. It will evolve into a modern AI browser and support a portfolio of new and trusted software additions.” He also wrote: “AI should always be a choice — something people can easily turn off.”
Bytes #458 noted that Firefox 147’s release notes made no mention of AI and set that against Mozilla’s broader strategy statement. That observation supports saying this particular release was presented around web-platform work, not that Mozilla abandoned its AI plans. The available statements do not establish that user criticism caused the release features or prompted a strategic retreat; the newsletter itself acknowledged that much of the release work was already underway.

The January 28, 2026 issue’s phrase is an editorial reaction to the release’s developer-facing features and their timing alongside discussion of Mozilla’s AI direction. The concrete basis for the praise is Firefox 147’s support for navigation control, CSS-based element positioning, and expanded View Transition support. Whether those additions amount to a broader change in Mozilla’s priorities is not established by the release notes or the CEO’s post.
