The ByoWave Proteus is a modular controller kit designed for Xbox and PC gaming. Its snap-and-play components let players rearrange physical controls, while a mapping system can save and switch configurations. Xbox announced preorders in May 2024, then said the controller was available for purchase in August 2024—so “pre-orders now” is no longer a reliable statement of its current status.
What is the ByoWave Proteus Controller?
Proteus is a physical controller kit made by ByoWave and designed for Xbox. Xbox described it as working with Xbox and PC games out of the box, but its 2024 announcement did not provide a detailed compatibility list for console generations, operating systems, individual games, or connection methods. Check ByoWave’s current product information for the setup you intend to use.
Instead of presenting one fixed controller layout, Proteus uses snap-and-play modules that can be arranged to suit a player’s preferences. Xbox says its mapping system lets players save configurations and switch between them. The company reported over 100 million possible combinations; that is Xbox’s 2024 product claim, not an independently verified count.
Can you preorder it now, and how much does it cost?
Xbox announced Proteus preorders on May 15, 2024, and on August 21, 2024, said it was available for purchase. The August announcement listed a $299 USD estimated retail price (ERP) and availability in the United States, Europe, the United Kingdom, and Canada. Those are historical launch details—not confirmation of today’s price, stock, or regional availability. Verify current terms with ByoWave or a seller before purchasing.

What makes Proteus an accessibility controller?
Its main accessibility idea is to let the player configure the physical placement and arrangement of controls rather than adapt to one fixed layout. That can matter when a standard controller’s shape or button positions do not work for a particular person. Xbox describes the modules as configurable around play style, physical needs, and game preferences, with saved mappings available for different configurations.

- Advanced Gaming Buttons – Get an edge over the competition with two mappable buttons you can program on-the-fly, mid-game—no system settings to configure
- 3-Way Trigger Locks – Set the travel distance of the triggers with three different positions to pull off quicker actions in your favorite FPS games or go full throttle in a high-end race car
- Dual Rumble Motors - Take your gaming experience to the next level, providing tactile feedback and sensations that bring your virtual worlds to life
- Immersive Impulse Triggers – provides reactive rumble sensations using built-in motors so you can feel the action of the game*
- Extra Long USB-C Cable - Provides you with 10ft of distance for more comfort and flexibility than shorter cables
That flexibility is not a guarantee that a particular arrangement will work for every disabled player. Xbox recognizes that gaming with a disability is individual. Consider which controls you need, where you can comfortably reach them, and whether the modular pieces and mapping options support the games and setup you use.
How does Proteus compare with other accessible controllers?
These products take different approaches. Proteus is an internally modular kit; the Xbox Adaptive Controller is a hub for connecting external input devices; the 8BitDo Lite SE offers a conventional controller form with specific button and joystick features. Which approach is useful depends on the controls and placement a player needs.
