Before buying software online, verify who is selling it, what the license includes, the full price after any trial or promotion, how cancellation works, and what the refund and privacy terms say. A padlock icon or a set of positive reviews cannot prove that a seller is legitimate. Use a payment method with a dispute process, and save the offer and purchase records.
Verify the seller and the offer
Start with the software publisher’s own website or a seller the publisher identifies as authorized. Check the seller’s identity and contact details independently rather than relying only on information in an unexpected email, pop-up, or ad. The FTC’s online-shopping advice recommends checking sellers and keeping the company name and website with your purchase records.
Confirm that the offer is for the software version, device or platform, region, and license type you need. Check whether it permits your intended use and whether access lasts for a set term, renews automatically, or continues after a one-time payment. Those details depend on the specific product’s license and terms; there is no single rule that applies to every software purchase.
Reviews can help you assess an offer, but they are not proof of legitimacy: the FTC’s shopping guidance warns that reviews may be fake or manipulated.

Work out the full price before entering payment details
For a subscription or free trial, identify the date billing starts, the amount and frequency of renewal charges, when a promotional rate ends, and whether there is an early termination fee. Compare the introductory price with the later renewal price. The FTC recommends checking trial terms, looking for prechecked boxes, noting cancellation dates, and finding out whether renewal will cost more than the promotional or previous rate in its guidance on free trials and auto-renewals.
Find the cancellation instructions before providing card details. The FTC says businesses should explain how to cancel before collecting payment information and that cancellation should be straightforward. If the price, renewal date, or cancellation route is hard to find, pause rather than assuming the offer will be easy to undo.

Read refund and privacy terms
Check the refund policy before downloading, activating, or starting a subscription. Look for the deadline, how to request a refund, and whether the seller treats downloaded or activated software differently. Save the policy as it appeared when you bought the product.
Refund and cancellation rights depend on where you buy and the terms that apply. For purchases within the EU, the European Commission describes a 14-day cancellation or return right, subject to applicable rules and exceptions; digital content and services can have conditions. See the Commission’s online buying guidance and check how the rule applies to your purchase. That EU-specific information should not be treated as a worldwide guarantee. The FTC’s US-focused shopping guidance recommends reviewing refund terms but does not establish a universal software refund right.

Review the privacy policy and user agreement for what the website or software collects, uses, and shares. Pay particular attention when an app requests sensitive information or device permissions. If the terms do not make those practices clear, consider whether you are comfortable proceeding.
Choose a payment method with recourse
HTTPS and a padlock help protect payment information in transit; they do not establish that a seller is honest. The FTC notes that scammers also use encrypted sites. In the United States, the FTC recommends credit cards for online shopping because they can provide a way to dispute charges, and warns against sellers who insist on hard-to-recover methods such as gift cards, wire transfers, payment apps, or cryptocurrency. Read the FTC’s online-shopping advice and use a payment route whose dispute process you understand.

Compare offers on the same terms
When weighing two or more products or sellers, compare the details that affect both cost and control—not just the introductory price or feature list.

These are comparison criteria, not a tested ranking of vendors. Check the current offer and license terms for each seller rather than assuming that similar-looking listings provide the same rights.

Keep records and act promptly if something goes wrong
Save the seller’s identity and website, offer page and terms, order confirmation, purchase date, amount, refund policy, and relevant correspondence. If you cancel, keep the request and any confirmation. These records can help you explain what you agreed to and when.
If you see a charge you did not authorize, contact the company, monitor your statements, and dispute the charge with your card issuer when appropriate. The FTC’s subscription guidance covers unauthorized subscription charges and recordkeeping. If a renewal notice or support message seems suspicious, do not use the link or phone number in it; reach the company through contact details you independently know to be correct. The FTC explains this precaution in its tech-support scam guidance.
Why cancellation terms deserve close attention
Subscription enforcement actions illustrate why buyers should read renewal and cancellation terms, but they do not establish that every subscription is problematic. In June 2024, the FTC announced action over allegations that Adobe hid an early termination fee and made cancellation difficult. Those were allegations and agency action, not a general finding about all software subscriptions. Read the FTC’s Adobe announcement for the details.
In May 2026, the FTC announced that Shutterstock would pay $35 million to settle allegations that included charging consumers without informed consent and making cancellation difficult. The case concerned Shutterstock’s digital photo and video service, most of whose content was offered through subscriptions; it is an enforcement example, not a software-specific estimate or a measure of how common subscription problems are. In the announcement, FTC Bureau of Consumer Protection Director Christopher Mufarrige said: “Subscription and negative option features can be beneficial for both companies and consumers, making renewal simpler and streamlining payment processes.” The FTC’s qualification is that the benefits depend on clear disclosure, informed consent, and straightforward cancellation.
