What are the open-box return rules at major U.S. retailers?
The retailer and the transaction—not the handheld model name—determine the return rules. The following comparison reflects published policies checked in 2026; read the listing and the policy for your seller of record before checkout.

Best Buy says its standard return policy includes open-box products, but “most products” is not a guarantee against a category or listing exception. Marketplace sellers generally follow Best Buy’s standard return policy unless noted, but the My Best Buy Plus/Total extension does not apply to those purchases. Read the seller and fulfillment details rather than relying on the retailer’s name alone. Micro Center states that “Open box items follow the same return policy as all our other products.” Its published policy distinguishes product categories, but its open-box FAQ does not independently say that every gaming handheld is a laptop or tablet. Does an open-box gaming handheld have a manufacturer warranty?
Maybe, but the open-box label alone cannot answer that. A retailer may say manufacturer coverage varies, the manufacturer may treat used or refurbished units differently, and any applicable warranty may have started before you bought the handheld.
Micro Center says the manufacturer warranty generally applies to open-box products unless the product page says otherwise, but generally starts from the original purchase or opening date. That is different from a promise of a fresh warranty period beginning on your checkout date. Best Buy’s guidance is narrower: “Manufacturer warranty coverage will vary by product.” Neither policy establishes a single warranty duration for all open-box handhelds.
The ASUS ROG Ally (2023) illustrates why model-specific checking matters. ASUS’s support page links product-specific warranty documents, and its gaming-console warranty card says coverage applies only when the product was not sold as used or refurbished. That language does not prove that every retailer’s open-box Ally is excluded, nor does it establish that every one is covered as new. Does the warranty start over when I buy open-box?
Do not assume it does. Micro Center says the manufacturer warranty for an open-box product generally begins at the original purchase or opening date, so part of the period may have elapsed before the open-box sale. ASUS offers a serial-number inquiry and a way to upload proof of purchase for a date review, but a date shown in a lookup does not by itself settle whether that open-box transaction qualifies for coverage.
Before checkout, ask the retailer or manufacturer to confirm the coverage that applies to the unit’s serial number and the date from which it runs. Save the response, the listing, and your receipt. If the manufacturer asks for documentation, those records help establish what was sold and when; they do not override the manufacturer’s eligibility terms. ASUS’s support site provides access to its product support resources and serial-number inquiry.
How can I verify coverage for the exact unit?
Use the model name to find the right support page, but use the serial number and proof of purchase to ask about the actual handheld. A retailer page that describes a product generally is not confirmation that a particular previously opened unit qualifies for a manufacturer warranty.
- Identify the seller and condition. Save the listing, note whether the seller is the retailer or a marketplace merchant, and record whether the item is described as open-box, pre-owned, or refurbished.
- Check the listed contents. Look for an explicit description of the charger, cable, case, or other included accessories. Do not infer that the original box is complete from the model name or a generic product photo.
- Read the seller’s return terms. Find the deadline, when the clock starts, the return method, and any final-sale language. Check the exact listing’s return or Warranty & Returns area where available.
- Ask about the serial-numbered unit. Contact the manufacturer with the serial number if available and ask whether the sale condition qualifies, what coverage applies, and the recorded start or end date. Ask the seller to confirm any warranty statement in writing.
- Keep the proof. Save the receipt and the manufacturer’s response. ASUS offers a route to upload purchase proof for a date review; an inquiry or displayed expiration date is not itself a guarantee of eligibility.
If the seller cannot provide the serial number before purchase, make the return deadline and return conditions especially clear to yourself. Once the device arrives, check the serial number promptly and raise any discrepancy while the seller’s return window is still open.

Before paying, make a short record of the listing’s promises and the applicable deadline. After delivery, inspect the handheld promptly while the return window remains open; this is a practical buyer checklist, not a claim that any particular unit has been tested.

- Save a screenshot or copy of the listing, including its condition description and included accessories.
- Confirm who sells and fulfills the order. A marketplace transaction can have different terms from a direct retail purchase.

Micro Center says returned accessories must be included and personal data removed; Best Buy warns that damage or missing major contents can lead to a return being denied. No. The condition labels can carry different seller policies and warranty terms. Walmart, for example, distinguishes Open Box from Restored Premium, while ASUS publishes separate warranty terms for refurbished products. GameStop’s pre-owned return policy likewise should not be applied automatically to a product listed as open-box.
Read the specific condition definition attached to the listing and the seller’s policy for that category. A label alone does not tell you whether the manufacturer will regard the device as new, used, or refurbished, or whether accessories will be included.
