You can buy a used foldable with reasonable confidence only after checking the exact phone, its repair exposure, remaining software support and the seller’s return terms. The available evidence does not justify naming six models as reliably safe or three as inherently unsafe: it contains no comparable independent failure-rate data for those rankings. The model notes below distinguish documented support and repair considerations from risks that must be assessed on the individual unit.
Why there isn’t a reliable six-to-three safe-buy ranking
A foldable’s condition and history matter more than a model name alone. A clean-looking phone can still have a damaged flexible display, hinge problems, a weak battery or an account or carrier lock. Conversely, a model with complicated repairs is not automatically a bad purchase if the specific unit is in good condition, priced accordingly and covered by useful return terms.
The cited sources do not provide comparative independent field-failure rates for the models below. Manufacturer durability claims and software-support estimates can inform a purchase, but neither establishes how long a particular used phone will last. Treat the models as candidates to evaluate, not as certified safe buys or automatic avoids.

Before relying on a support estimate, check the current manufacturer support information for the exact model, regional variant and purchase market. A stated support duration is not the same as a confirmed end date for the specific phone you are considering.

How to inspect a used foldable before paying
Ask to inspect the phone in person when possible, or confirm that the seller’s return window gives you time to complete these checks. Test both displays and the hinge through normal movement; do not force the hinge or press hard on the flexible screen.
- Confirm identity and lock status. Check that the IMEI on the phone matches the listing and available documentation. Confirm the phone is not carrier-locked, activation-locked or otherwise restricted, and make sure the seller can complete a legitimate transfer or reset.
- Inspect the inner display in good light. Look for lines, dead pixels, discoloration, lifting, cracks or damage along the crease. Check the outer display as well. Google warns that flexible screens are softer than traditional screens; keep sand, crumbs and other fine particles away from the display and hinge.
- Check the hinge and its surroundings. Open and close the phone gently through its normal travel. Notice roughness, unusual resistance, looseness or visible damage. Look closely for debris around the hinge and screen edges. A brief demonstration cannot prove the hinge’s remaining life, but it can expose visible or functional problems.
- Test everyday functions. Check battery performance, cameras, microphones, speakers, buttons, charging and ports. Test calls and connectivity with the carrier or network you plan to use, where practical.
- Review provenance and seller recourse. Ask about prior screen or hinge repairs, drops, liquid exposure and the reason for sale. Read the grading terms, return window and warranty conditions; get the seller’s answers in writing when buying remotely.
- Price in repair risk. Find out whether the manufacturer or a qualified repair provider can service the model in your region, and whether parts and service documentation are available. Compare the price with the likely cost and availability of display or hinge repair. Foldable repairs can be challenging, so a low asking price is not by itself a good deal.
Which models deserve extra scrutiny?
Original Pixel Fold
Give the inner display and hinge assembly especially close attention. iFixit describes this repair path as difficult and the assembly as costly; its historical assessment does not provide a current quote. If you cannot establish local repair options and acceptable return terms, the uncertainty may outweigh a low purchase price.

Original Samsung Galaxy Fold
Its first-generation design warrants a careful hinge and inner-screen inspection. iFixit’s 2019 discussion of debris and pressure risks applies to that original model; it is not proof that later Galaxy Z Fold phones share the same failure rate.
Galaxy Z Fold7 and Pixel 9 Pro Fold
Do not confuse repairability information with reliability data. iFixit describes adhesive work on the Fold7 and reports service manuals, parts and calibration tools for the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, while also noting the difficulty of foldable repairs. For either phone, verify local repair access and costs before deciding what the unit is worth to you.

How to make the final decision
- Buy only if the individual unit passes inspection. A model’s cycle rating or reputation cannot substitute for a working hinge, clean displays and tested functions.
- Require enough software support for your needs. Verify the exact regional variant and current support timeline rather than relying only on a guide’s stated duration.
- Prefer clear recourse. A return window or warranty is valuable because a short inspection cannot establish the phone’s remaining service life.
- Walk away when key facts are missing. Unclear IMEI or lock status, refusal to demonstrate the hinge, display defects, no return path or unavailable repair options are sound reasons to pass.
