Build GTK with Meson, using Ninja on Linux and other Unix-like systems. For a Linux desktop, installing your distribution’s GTK development packages is usually quicker; a source build is useful when you need control over the version, installation prefix, or enabled platform backends.
Choose a source build or distribution packages
The GTK project recommends using prebuilt packages when they are available, since they let developers start programming sooner. Packages also follow the versions and configuration choices made by the distribution. Building from source gives you control over the installation prefix and Meson options, but means managing dependencies and their discovery.
| Option | What it offers | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Distribution packages | Faster setup using the distribution’s packaged GTK and development files. | Version and packaging choices are set by the distribution. |
| Source build | Control over the installation prefix and backend configuration through Meson. | Requires Meson, build tools, dependencies, and correct paths for dependency discovery. |
For the Linux package names listed by GTK, Arch uses gtk4; Debian and Ubuntu use libgtk-4-1 and libgtk-4-dev; Fedora uses gtk4 and gtk4-devel. GTK 3 and GTK 4 development environments can coexist. See the GTK installation guide for package details.
Install the build tools and dependencies
The GTK build guide states, “In order to build GTK, you will need meson installed on your system.” Linux and other Unix-like systems also need Ninja for the build step.

Documented prerequisites include pkg-config, Meson, Ninja, JPEG, PNG, and TIFF libraries, and FreeType. Depending on the system, libiconv and libintl may also be needed. GTK-team-maintained dependencies include GLib, GdkPixbuf, Pango, and GObject Introspection. GTK’s installation guide identifies GTK, GLib, Pango, Gdk-pixbuf, ATK, GObject-Introspection, and Epoxy as components of a stable environment.
Build dependent libraries in order
If building dependencies yourself, build GLib, Cairo, Pango, and then GTK. Install the dependencies and GTK into the same prefix so Meson and pkg-config can discover a consistent set of libraries and metadata. The build guide’s prerequisites and procedure are documented in Building GTK and the GTK installation guide.
Configure and install GTK with Meson
From the GTK source directory, set up a separate build directory, compile, and install. This example installs under /opt/gtk; choose a prefix appropriate to your system and permissions.

Compile the configured build with Ninja through Meson:
meson compile -Cbuilddir -
Install the build into the prefix:
meson install -Cbuilddir
Meson stores build artifacts in builddir. To inspect or adjust available options, run meson configure builddir. The official guide covers the build setup and configuration options: GTK building documentation.

Make a custom prefix discoverable
If GTK or its dependencies are installed outside standard system locations, set CPPFLAGS, LDFLAGS, and PKG_CONFIG_PATH so compilation and pkg-config can find the headers, libraries, and metadata. At runtime, a nonstandard library location may also require adjusting LD_LIBRARY_PATH and PATH. The required values depend on the chosen prefix and system layout; do not copy paths from another installation without checking where your files were installed.
Select the platform backends
GTK supplies widgets, GDK handles window-system facilities, and GSK provides a scene graph for rendering. GDK supports Wayland and X11 on Linux, Microsoft Windows, and Apple macOS. Default backend choices vary: Linux enables Wayland by default and also enables X11 unless the platform default changes it; Windows defaults to win32, and macOS defaults to its macOS backend.
Recommended Free Tools
To make a backend choice explicit, pass the relevant Meson option when setting up the build, for example:
meson setup --prefix /opt/gtk -Dx11-backend=enabled builddir
Available options include -Dx11-backend=enabled, -Dwayland-backend=enabled, -Dwin32-backend=enabled, and -Dmacos-backend=enabled. Use options that fit the target platform and build; inspect the configuration with meson configure builddir. The defaults and options are described in the GTK build guide.
Build an application against the installed GTK
Use pkg-config to obtain the compiler include flags and linker flags for GTK 4. The GTK getting-started documentation demonstrates this command:
gcc $(pkg-config --cflags gtk4) -o example-3 example-3.c $(pkg-config --libs gtk4)
If GTK is installed in a custom prefix, pkg-config must be able to find its .pc metadata, typically by setting PKG_CONFIG_PATH. Using pkg-config keeps the application’s include and link flags aligned with the installed GTK metadata. See Getting Started with GTK.

Build GTK on Windows and prepare an application for shipping
GTK’s Windows installation method supplies scripts that build the GTK stack from source and produce libraries and tools usable by Visual Studio or Meson projects. A program that builds successfully on a development machine is not, by itself, a complete Windows distribution: the application installer must include the application artifacts, GTK binaries, and runtime dependencies. Follow the Windows-specific instructions in the GTK Windows installation guide for the supported build workflow.
The GTK documentation also describes a macOS backend and the corresponding Meson option. The exact build steps and dependencies are platform-specific; use the project’s platform guidance rather than assuming the Unix-like command sequence covers every detail.
