Can we build Baymax? We can build robots that borrow from the character’s soft, inflatable design, and researchers have already made a small Baymax-inspired upper body. But the evidence does not show a full-size, walking healthcare companion with the fictional character’s abilities. A realistic build would combine a yielding outer body with an articulated support frame, actuators, contact sensors, and carefully controlled software.

What a real-life Baymax means today

Baymax is a fictional healthcare companion in Disney’s Big Hero 6 and Baymax!. The real robotics work is narrower: researchers have explored how inflatable, compliant structures can make physical interaction with a robot gentler, and how those structures can work alongside rigid mechanisms that provide controlled movement.

Carnegie Mellon University says the film character was inspired in part by research on lightweight, compliant inflatable robots by Siddharth Sanan and Chris Atkeson. That connection makes Baymax a useful reference point for soft robotics, but inspiration is not the same as reproducing the character or its healthcare capabilities.

What the documented Baymax-inspired robot can do

Alexander Alspach, Joohyung Kim, and Katsu Yamane’s Disney Research paper describes a toy-sized upper-body robot designed for playful physical interaction with children. It is not a full walking robot. Air-filled, 3D-printed soft modules cover parts of the arms, pelvis, chest, and back. Pressure sensing in the modules helps detect contact, while an actuated rigid frame supports and moves the body.

Measure Disney Research upper-body prototype
Scope Upper body, not a complete walking robot
Degrees of freedom 10: a 2-DOF waist, 3-DOF shoulders, and 1-DOF elbows, as reported by the paper
Mass 2.2 kg for the reported upper-body prototype
Dimensions 21.8 × 31.0 × 24.6 cm (height × width × depth) for the reported upper-body prototype
Body construction Air-filled, pressure-sensed soft modules mounted around an actuated rigid frame

Those measurements describe that particular study; they are not a suggested size or specification for a new robot. In particular, a compact upper body does not establish that a full-size version could walk, support a person, or carry out care tasks.

How a practical build would be put together

A Baymax-inspired robot is not just an inflatable shell. The soft body, internal mechanisms, sensing, and software have to work as one system.

1. A compliant outer body

Inflatable or otherwise soft modules can yield when touched and may cushion some impacts. Carnegie Mellon’s project describes lightness and compliance as ways to reduce impact and crushing hazards, and also identifies cleanability and versatility as possible design benefits. These are design rationales, not proof that a robot is clinically safe or easy to sanitize.

2. An articulated support frame

Softness alone makes precise, repeatable movement and structural support difficult. A rigid internal frame with defined joints gives the robot places to mount actuators and helps carry its own structure. The Disney Research prototype used this approach: soft modules around an actuated frame rather than an entirely soft body.

3. Actuation and controlled movement

Actuators move the frame’s joints; control systems must limit and coordinate that movement during interaction. The 2015 “Can We Build Baymax?” workshop identifies force and torque control, compliant joint mechanisms, inflatable body structures, soft skin sensors, and muscle actuators among the relevant research areas. A list of research topics is not a ready-made design or a tested recipe for a complete robot.

4. Contact sensing

Pressure sensors in soft modules can provide information about contact. That feedback can help a robot respond to touch, but sensing contact does not by itself guarantee a safe response: the system also needs appropriate control behavior and safeguards.

5. Interaction software and behavior

Even a mechanically capable robot needs software for motion, expression, and interaction. The workshop series’ 2026 theme shifted toward humanoids for characters, performance, and creative applications, including embodied characters, motion and expression, and character design for approachability. This is a research and creative direction, not evidence of an autonomous healthcare companion.

Why the design balances softness with rigidity

The central engineering problem is that softness and rigidity help with different tasks. The 2015 workshop description says a soft body can be advantageous for human interaction, while walking and manipulation benefit from rigid bodies and well-defined joints for precise control and structural strength. A robot intended to move around people has to integrate both properties rather than maximize either one.

That trade-off affects the whole design. A softer exterior may reduce some contact hazards, but it does not automatically provide the strength, joint precision, or control needed for walking and manipulation. A rigid mechanism may move predictably and support a payload, but its contact with people still needs to be managed. The integrated design—not the inflatable appearance alone—is the hard part.

What sensing research does—and does not—show

A 2019 preprint, “Real-time Soft Body 3D Proprioception via Deep Vision-based Sensing,” tested a vision-based method for estimating soft-body shape using a Baymax-shaped toy, a latex balloon, and soft robot fingers. Its authors report computation of no more than 2.5 ms per frame and relative error of no more than 1% in their evaluation. Those figures belong to that study’s shape-estimation method and test setup; they do not show that a full-size Baymax can perceive its whole body or people with that accuracy.

Can someone build a real-life Baymax at home?

A maker could aim for a small soft-robotics demonstrator or an interactive character-inspired upper body, but the cited work does not provide a complete full-size build plan, bill of materials, total cost, or validated care-robot design. The Disney Research paper used 3D-printed components and identifies a Stratasys printer in its methods; owning a consumer 3D printer would not, on its own, reproduce the study or supply its sensing, actuation, frame, controls, and safety engineering.

A sensible scope is to treat the prototype as a research direction: build and test a limited mechanism, measure how its soft modules respond to contact, and keep movement and interaction within a controlled setup. Do not treat a soft exterior as permission for unrestricted hugging or unsupervised use around people.

Where the Baymax research is heading

The “Can We Build Baymax?” workshop series dates to 2015. Its 2026 workshop page focuses on character, performance, and creative applications of humanoids rather than presenting a completed care robot. The page lists speakers as “to be announced” at the time it was accessed. The ongoing workshop shows that Baymax remains a productive lens for robotics questions; it does not establish that the fictional healthcare role has been realized.
