A long-running agent needs more than a bigger context window: it needs a policy for what stays active, what gets saved for later, and what must remain in a durable record. Build a pipeline that monitors context pressure, compacts at deliberate checkpoints, persists session state separately from reusable memory, and keeps important facts in reviewed artifacts—not only in a summary of the conversation.

What a context-pruning pipeline should preserve

Pruning is not simply deleting old messages. The goal is to limit the information loaded into the current model call while keeping the agent able to continue its task and recover details when needed. Design around three distinct information layers:

  • Working context: Instructions, recent interaction, tool results, and other information needed for the current step. It is temporary and should be kept within a deliberate budget.
  • Session state and memory: Information persisted beyond the current call. Session history supports continuation of a particular conversation; reusable memory carries selected information across conversations. They can use different storage and retrieval policies.
  • Durable artifacts: Reviewed records that people or systems rely on, such as a decision log, approved requirements, or a generated report. A compacted conversation is a continuation aid, not automatically a source of truth.

OpenAI’s agent-context cookbook explicitly distinguishes working context, memory, and artifacts. Anthropic describes the context window as working memory and cautions that more capacity alone does not ensure better results.

How to design the pipeline

1. Measure the whole request, not just the chat transcript

Set a trigger based on the context actually sent to the model, or on a reliable estimate of it. The visible dialogue is only part of the total: system instructions, tool definitions, tool results, and generated output also consume context. Anthropic’s context-window documentation identifies these as parts of the request and notes that accuracy and recall can decline as token count grows.

Reserve headroom for the next model response and any expected tool cycle. A trigger set at the absolute context limit leaves no room to compact or continue safely. The appropriate threshold depends on the model, request composition, and application; the cited documentation does not establish one universal threshold.

2. Choose an intentional compaction trigger

There are three practical trigger patterns. A token threshold is predictable when the application can estimate request size. A custom heuristic can account for task stage or the amount of history likely to be useful. A workflow checkpoint lets the agent finish a coherent phase before consolidating state. These approaches can be combined, but their behavior should be explicit so that compaction does not happen unpredictably in the middle of an important operation.

OpenAI cookbook authors Wesley Pasfield and Emre Okcular recommend: “Compact at meaningful workflow boundaries, not after every turn.” In practice, a checkpoint might follow a completed research phase, a tool-heavy batch, or a decision that has been recorded in an artifact. Preserve enough working state for the next phase.

3. Decide what state must survive

Before compacting, identify the minimum state needed to resume safely. Depending on the task, that may include the current objective, completed and pending work, constraints, unresolved questions, important decisions, and references to saved artifacts. This is an application design choice, not a universal schema prescribed by the provider documentation.

Do not assume a summary retains every detail. Summaries can omit specifics, while provider-native compaction state may not be readable by a person. Keep exact facts that need to be checked or cited in a durable artifact and give the continuation state a way to refer to it.

4. Persist session history and reusable memory separately

Session persistence makes a later turn able to recover conversation items; reusable memory helps future sessions find selected information. Treat these as related but distinct concerns. OpenAI’s TypeScript Agents SDK sessions restore stored conversation items and persist new inputs and outputs; they support custom storage backends. LangChain’s Deep Agents documentation likewise presents persistent memory separately from summarization and offloading.

Keep the active context bounded by retrieving only the saved information relevant to the current phase, rather than reinserting an entire archive. The cited framework documentation describes memory and offloading but does not prescribe a universal retrieval schema, ranking method, or conflict-resolution policy. Choose those deliberately for the application.

5. Recover from interruptions and verify the handoff

A compaction point is also a recovery boundary. Persist the updated session state and artifact references so the next turn or process can reconstruct the current position. After compaction, check that the continuation contains the next objective and any constraints needed to act safely; when exact evidence matters, retrieve it from the durable artifact rather than relying on recalled wording.

Choose a compaction mechanism that fits the stack

Mechanism How it carries state forward Implementation considerations
OpenAI Responses API server-side compaction With a Responses create request configured using context_management and compact_threshold, the server compacts when rendered token count crosses the configured threshold and returns an encrypted compaction item. OpenAI describes that item as opaque, carrying prior state and reasoning in fewer tokens, not as a human-readable summary. For stateless input-array chaining, append output items, including compaction items, to the next input. Older items before the latest compaction item can be dropped to reduce request size. For previous_response_id chaining, send the new user message and carry forward the response ID; do not manually prune history in this mode. The API also documents a standalone compact endpoint for explicit stateless compaction; pass its returned compacted window through as-is as the canonical next context window.
OpenAI Agents SDK sessions Sessions restore persisted conversation items on later turns and save new user and assistant items. OpenAIResponsesCompactionSession wraps a session and can compact stored history using the Responses compact API. MemorySession is intended for local development; a custom backend can implement the session interface. The compaction wrapper’s default trigger is based on accumulated non-user items, and developers can override it with token-count or other heuristics. Verify defaults for the SDK version in use. The documentation cautions against pairing the wrapper with OpenAIConversationsSession, which uses a different server-managed history flow.
Anthropic Messages API threshold compaction The documented threshold approach detects a configured input-token threshold, generates a summary, inserts a compaction block, and continues with compacted context. The threshold-compaction guide labels the feature beta and shows the compact_20260112 strategy and a beta header in its API example. Check current feature flags, supported models, and API syntax before implementation; these details can change.
LangChain Deep Agents context management The overview treats context management as including initial input, compression or offloading, isolation, and long-term memory. It describes summarization and offloading for work exceeding one context window. This is a framework-level context-management approach rather than the same provider-native compaction representation used by the APIs above. Decide how its memory and offloaded information fit the application’s persistence and retrieval requirements.

These mechanisms are not interchangeable formats. Provider-native compaction can reduce the work of carrying conversation state forward, but it can tie continuation to one provider’s API semantics. A portable application-owned state representation can ease migration, but requires the application to define and maintain its own state and artifact conventions.

A practical decision framework

Make the following decisions before adopting a mechanism; they determine whether the pipeline is recoverable, portable, and appropriate for the task.

  • Trigger: Is compaction automatic, threshold-driven, based on a custom heuristic, or tied to workflow checkpoints? Define what happens if the trigger fires during an unfinished phase.
  • Fidelity: Which details must survive exactly, which can be summarized, and which belong in artifacts? Treat opaque provider state and human-readable summaries differently.
  • Persistence: Is history held only in process memory, written to a custom backend, or managed by a provider conversation service? Confirm what can be restored after a restart.
  • Retrieval: How does a later phase find a specific earlier fact without loading the entire transcript? Retrieval design is application-specific.
  • Portability: Can the application move between providers, or does it rely on provider-specific compaction items and chaining behavior?
  • Quality and operations: What additional model calls, latency, token usage, and task-quality effects does the chosen policy introduce? OpenAI frames compaction as a balance among quality, cost, and latency, but the cited sources provide no cross-provider benchmark.

Common failure modes and safeguards

Compacting too late

If the trigger waits until the context is almost full, the application may have too little room for a compaction operation or the next response. Leave headroom and include tool schemas and outputs in the estimate, not just messages.

Compacting after every turn

Frequent compaction can discard useful local continuity and create unnecessary work. Prefer meaningful checkpoints unless a threshold policy is needed to protect against context pressure between checkpoints.

Treating a summary as a complete record

A compacted summary is not guaranteed to preserve every detail, and an opaque provider item is not designed for human inspection. Store decisions and relied-on facts in artifacts, and retrieve exact material when needed.

Mixing distinct history-management modes

Chaining and compaction rules differ by provider and session abstraction. Follow the relevant API’s documented continuation path; for example, OpenAI distinguishes input-array chaining from previous_response_id chaining and warns against manually pruning the latter.

Assuming a larger window removes the need to curate

More available context does not itself solve relevance or recall. Anthropic warns that performance can degrade as token count grows, which is why a pipeline should manage both capacity and information selection.

What to monitor after deployment

Instrument the pipeline so operators can see whether its policy behaves as intended. Useful application-level measures include how often compaction triggers, whether recovery succeeds after interruption, how often the agent retrieves archived information, and whether tasks fail because required details were lost. These are recommended operational checks, not benchmark results established by the cited documentation. Evaluate them on the application’s own representative tasks; do not infer a token, cost, latency, or accuracy improvement without measurement.
