Build the dashboard around three selections—countries, indicators, and years—then show the resulting World Bank observations as both a chart and a table. This guide uses the World Bank Indicators API v2 and Streamlit’s documented controls and display components. Its example country scope is a clearly named set of South American countries, not a World Bank-defined regional grouping.

Define the dashboard’s South America scope

The World Bank country endpoint supplies country names and metadata, but the cited documentation does not prescribe a single country roster for “South America.” For a reproducible dashboard, explicitly choose and document the countries you want to include rather than treating a broad API region as the answer.

This implementation uses these 12 sovereign countries as its scope: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay, and Venezuela. The list is a geographic choice for this tutorial, not a World Bank-defined API aggregate. If you use a different convention—for example, include territories or classify countries differently—make that choice visible in the app.

Use country metadata to obtain consistent labels and codes, then filter the returned records to the chosen country set. The World Bank country API documentation describes fields including ISO alpha-2 and alpha-3 codes, country name, region, income level, lending type, capital city, and coordinates where available.

Use the World Bank Indicators API v2

The World Bank documents the Indicators API as v2; v1 was discontinued on June 19, 2020. The Data Help Desk says the API provides access to nearly 16,000 time-series indicators across more than 45 databases, and that API keys and other authentication methods are no longer necessary. Use the v2 endpoint pattern and request JSON explicitly: by default, the API responds with XML.

A country-and-indicator request follows this pattern:

This is an endpoint-pattern example, not a claim about the latest returned values or complete coverage. Confirm the selected indicator code, response, and available years against the live API when implementing the app. The World Bank’s API Basic Call Structures documents JSON format selection, dates and date ranges, paging, and the per_page parameter. Its default page size is 50, so request enough records or follow pagination if a response spans more than one page. Multiple indicator codes can be separated by semicolons, subject to documented URL and indicator limits.

Load country and indicator metadata

Use country metadata for labels

Country codes make API requests concise; names make controls and charts understandable. Fetch country metadata and map each selected code to its official API name rather than maintaining a second, potentially inconsistent naming scheme. Filter the available choices to the tutorial’s stated 12-country scope.

Use indicator metadata for context

Indicator metadata includes its code, name, unit, source ID, source note, source organization, and topic. Use the metadata to populate the indicator selector and display the series name and unit near the chart. Retain the source organization and source note in the app—such as in an expander or details panel—so users can tell what is being compared. See the World Bank indicator API documentation for indicator queries and metadata fields.

For a first version, offer a short, curated list of verified indicator codes rather than asking readers to navigate the full catalog. A code and its display name should come from the API metadata, and the app should handle a code that returns no observations for a selected country or period without presenting missing data as zero.

Build the Streamlit interface

Streamlit documents selection controls such as select boxes and sliders, along with chart, metric, and interactive dataframe display components. The following layout is a practical design assembled from those documented capabilities; it is not a claim of a tested implementation.

  1. Choose countries: use a multiselect control populated with the scoped country labels. A multiselect lets readers compare several national series in one view.
  2. Choose an indicator: use a select box whose labels come from indicator metadata. Keep the selected indicator’s unit visible alongside its name.
  3. Choose years: use a range slider or equivalent pair of year controls. Set its bounds from the available observations for the selected series, or clearly show when observations do not cover the entire chosen interval.
  4. Request observations: construct a v2 country-and-indicator request for each selected country, set format=json, and include the selected date range. Read all required pages when the result exceeds the API’s default page size.
  5. Prepare the result: convert each returned observation into a row with country, year, value, indicator name, and unit. Preserve null or unavailable values as missing, not zero.
  6. Show the chart and records: display a time-series chart with one series per selected country, then place the observations in an interactive dataframe so readers can inspect the underlying values.

For the controls and displays, consult the Streamlit API reference. Keep the chart title or adjacent caption specific: it should identify the indicator, unit, selected period, and country scope. A chart without the unit or series context can make unlike quantities appear comparable.

Make country comparisons meaningful

Compare like with like

Use the same indicator code across countries, and put its unit near the visualization. Different indicators may measure different concepts or use different units; placing them on one chart does not make them comparable.

Pi 5 Offers lightning-fast CPU speed, a PCI Express interface, a Real Time Clock (RTC) and a power button and runs significantly cooler than Pi 4.

Show actual time coverage

Indicators can have different availability by country and year. The API supports date filtering, but it does not guarantee that every selected series has an observation for every year. Keep missing years visible as gaps or missing table entries, and consider offering a common time window when readers compare trends. Do not interpolate or fill missing values without clearly explaining that transformation.

Distinguish countries from aggregates

The API also permits aggregate codes in place of country codes. Its documented LCN aggregate is Latin America & Caribbean, not a South America-only total. Do not label it “South America”; use the explicit country selection for this dashboard instead. See the World Bank aggregate API documentation for aggregate queries.

Explain what each displayed value means

For every view, preserve enough context for readers to interpret the data: the selected countries, the indicator name and unit, the year window, and the indicator’s source organization and note. Values are World Bank-published observations returned for the requested indicator and period; they are not a guarantee of complete country-year coverage. Make the table available alongside the chart so a reader can inspect the individual records behind a trend.
