Make the consumer safe to run repeatedly by using a stable event ID and coordinating duplicate detection with the business effect. The AWS Console can connect the managed services, but code is still needed to shape, publish, process, and deduplicate events.
How the DynamoDB outbox pattern prevents lost notifications
A direct database write followed by a separate queue send has a failure gap: the database change can commit while the message send fails, or a message can be sent for a change that ultimately does not commit. The outbox pattern closes that gap by storing the event alongside the business change in the same atomic DynamoDB transaction. A separate relay publishes committed outbox records to SQS.
The resulting flow is: application transaction → DynamoDB business item and outbox item → DynamoDB Stream → relay Lambda → SQS → consumer. The stream is change capture, not a domain-event policy: your application must decide which changes represent publishable events and define their schema.
Define the event and write it transactionally
Choose an event envelope before configuring the services. Include the fields the consumer needs without requiring it to infer business meaning from an arbitrary table change.

- Event ID: a stable identifier reused if the relay retries the same outbox record.
- Event type and schema version: identify the intended action and how to interpret the payload.
- Entity key and creation time: provide context and help with tracing or reconciliation.
- Payload: include the data required by consumers, with a deliberate policy for sensitive or unnecessary fields.
In application code, use DynamoDB TransactWriteItems to write both the business item and its corresponding outbox item. DynamoDB transactions are all-or-nothing within the Region where the write runs; they do not make a transaction atomic across Global Table Regions. The API’s optional client token makes retries of the same request idempotent for a limited period: 10 minutes after the request finishes. That short request-retry facility is not a replacement for durable consumer deduplication.
Decide what happens to outbox items after publication. You can retain them for audit and replay, or mark them published or expired under a defined retention policy. Do not remove an event until there is a dependable recovery path for a relay or downstream outage.
Enable DynamoDB Streams and choose the record view
- In the DynamoDB Console, choose Tables, then select the table that stores the business and outbox items.
- Open Exports and streams and turn on DynamoDB Streams.
- Choose a stream view type that includes the fields your relay needs, save the change, and copy the stream ARN for the Lambda trigger.
| Stream view | What the relay receives | When it may fit |
|---|---|---|
KEYS_ONLY |
Item key attributes | When the relay can fetch the needed event data separately; this keeps the stream record smaller but adds a read. |
NEW_IMAGE |
The item after the change | Often suitable when an inserted outbox item contains the complete event envelope. |
OLD_IMAGE |
The item before the change | When the relay needs the prior item state. |
NEW_AND_OLD_IMAGES |
Both item states | When the event logic needs to compare before and after values. |
The view type cannot be edited in place. Changing it requires disabling and recreating the stream, so select it based on the relay’s actual data needs. DynamoDB Streams retains records for up to 24 hours; a longer interruption requires a separate reconciliation or replay source.

Create the SQS queue and stream relay
Create an SQS queue for the events and a Lambda function to relay outbox records. Give the Lambda execution role permission to read the relevant DynamoDB Stream and send messages to that specific queue; avoid granting broader permissions than the relay needs. Add a DynamoDB Streams trigger to the Lambda using the stream ARN copied from the table.
The relay code should identify only the intended outbox records, construct an SQS message from the durable event envelope, and preserve the event ID unchanged. Do not publish every table mutation as a business event unless that is explicitly the table’s event contract.
In the Lambda event-source mapping, review batch size, retry attempts, maximum record age, and the optional standard SQS destination for records discarded after processing failures. Configure partial batch responses where appropriate so a failed record does not force successful records in the same batch to be retried unnecessarily. A stream record exists in the stream once, but a Lambda invocation can process it more than once when retries occur.

Build an idempotent SQS consumer
SQS Standard provides at-least-once delivery, so a message can be delivered more than once. AWS’s guidance is direct: “Design your applications to be idempotent (they should not be affected adversely when processing the same message more than once).” Queue delivery settings alone cannot ensure that a repeated message has no repeated business effect.
A consumer may be another Lambda function triggered by SQS or a worker that receives and deletes messages after successful processing. In either case, validate the envelope and schema version, use the stable event ID as the idempotency key, and acknowledge or delete the message only after successful processing.
Coordinate deduplication with the business effect
For a business effect that is itself a DynamoDB write, a strong approach is to record the event ID as processed and apply the business change in one DynamoDB transaction. A separate deduplication marker can fail in a dangerous gap: the marker may be stored, then the process may crash before the effect, causing a retry to be skipped. Reversing the order can allow a retry to repeat the effect.

For effects in an external API or across systems, do not assume exactly-once effects from queue deduplication. Prefer an idempotent downstream API when available, or maintain an inbox or processing ledger with explicit states and a reconciliation strategy for uncertain outcomes. The correct design depends on the datastore and side effect; the invariant is that a retry must not silently lose the effect or apply it twice.
How do I make my Lambda function idempotent?
Pass the same durable event ID through the relay on every retry. Before applying the business operation, check whether that ID has already completed; ensure the completion record and a transactional business write commit together when both are in DynamoDB. If the operation cannot be committed atomically with the marker, design for uncertain outcomes using an idempotent downstream operation or reconciliation rather than treating “message seen” as proof that the effect completed.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose Standard or FIFO based on the delivery requirement
| Queue type | What it is suited to | Design implication |
|---|---|---|
| SQS Standard | Straightforward queueing where strict ordering is not required. | Consumers must tolerate duplicate delivery and should not assume messages arrive in business order. |
| SQS FIFO | Workloads where ordered processing is a business requirement and queue-level deduplication is useful. | Queue-level features do not eliminate the need to make effects safe around retries, crashes, and uncertain completion. |
Choose FIFO for a real ordering requirement, not as a substitute for consumer idempotency. A consumer can still encounter failures around the point where an effect succeeds but acknowledgment or processing state is uncertain.

Plan for poison messages and stream recovery
Set up a deliberate dead-letter or redrive path for malformed events and repeatedly failing work, and make failed or discarded records visible to operators. For the stream relay, configure retry limits and a destination for discarded records so a problematic batch does not remain an invisible failure. Document who investigates, how an event is repaired or replayed, and how duplicate effects are prevented during recovery.
Because stream history is limited to 24 hours, a prolonged outage can outlast the source records. If recovery may take longer, retain an independent event or business-data source from which missing work can be reconciled.
Verify the failure paths, not just the happy path
- Create a business change through the application path and confirm that the transaction creates the matching outbox item.
- Confirm that the stream trigger invokes the relay and that the expected event envelope reaches SQS.
- Cause a relay retry or repeat delivery, then confirm the event ID remains the same and the consumer does not repeat the business effect.
- Send a malformed or poison event and verify that it follows the configured failure and redrive path and can be investigated.
- Interrupt processing around a send attempt and inspect whether a duplicate can occur; verify that consumer idempotency handles that case.
- Check the discarded-record destination, CloudWatch logs, and the documented recovery procedure. AWS’s stream-trigger tutorial also uses table item writes, updates, and deletes with Lambda log checks as a basic trigger verification.
These checks validate different boundaries: the transaction protects the database change and event record, the relay connects the stream to the queue, and the consumer protects the business effect from repeated delivery.
