Neither BT nor TalkTalk is the better choice for every home. Compare what each can supply at your address, the closest available speed tiers, guaranteed or estimated speeds, and the full cost across the contract. Ofcom’s 2024 customer survey results and Q1 2026 complaints data also give TalkTalk and BT different service records—but they measure different things and cannot predict your individual experience.
What changed after BT announced its TalkTalk deal?
On 5 October 2026, BT Group announced a deal to acquire TalkTalk Group. That announcement does not mean TalkTalk has already been absorbed into BT’s consumer operations: BT says the companies remain separate and continue to compete pending regulatory review.
Ofcom’s customer advice says TalkTalk customers remain TalkTalk customers and do not need to do anything differently. During the transition, Ofcom says there is no immediate change to their price, contract, billing access or service. Customers can continue using landline, broadband and pay TV as normal. BT says TalkTalk’s existing support channels remain in place; customers should use their usual TalkTalk channels. (Ofcom, 5 October 2026; BT, TalkTalk transition information.)
How do BT and TalkTalk prices compare?
The figures below are offers displayed on the providers’ pages on 7 October 2026, not permanent or address-independent tariffs. They show the advertised monthly charges and scheduled increases, rather than a calculated whole-contract total. Both providers’ availability and offers can depend on postcode.

Source: BT and TalkTalk offer pages accessed 7 October 2026. TalkTalk says its full-fibre plans are subject to location-specific conditions and Direct Debit. The TalkTalk 900 price is listed as “from” £36, so it should not be treated as a guaranteed quote for every address.
What the displayed prices do—and do not—show
On these snapshots, TalkTalk’s Full Fibre 500 starts at a lower monthly price than BT’s 500 tier, but the pages do not present all terms in the same way. The figures alone do not establish which provider will be cheaper over your particular contract. The 900-tier starting prices are close, and TalkTalk’s is shown as “from.” Check the offer available at your address and compare the total scheduled payments, contract term, installation or upfront charges, and any extras before ordering.

Ofcom notes that broadband costs can vary with technology, speed, extras, contract length and installation charges. It recommends using an accredited comparison service to compare deals across the full contract, rather than relying on the initial monthly price. (Ofcom, “Choosing the best mobile, broadband and landline provider.”)
Which provider is faster at your address?
BT’s offer page lists Full Fibre packages up to 900 Mbps as well as part-fibre plans. TalkTalk lists Full Fibre 500 and 900 among other packages. These are advertised tiers, not confirmation that either tier is orderable at a particular home. Check each provider’s address checker; the available technology and speeds can differ by postcode.

When comparing results, keep three numbers distinct: the advertised package speed, the provider’s estimate for your address, and any guaranteed minimum. For the displayed BT offers above, the page gives guaranteed minimum and upload figures. The cited TalkTalk offer details do not state equivalent figures, so request or check the address-specific estimate and guarantee rather than treating its tier name as a promise of delivered speed.
Ofcom says exact experienced speeds cannot be known in advance. They can vary with the time of day, how many people and devices are connected, and whether a device uses Wi-Fi or a wired connection. If speeds are poor only in some rooms, that may be an in-home Wi-Fi coverage issue rather than a fault with the broadband line. A mesh system may help coverage in that situation, but it does not increase the speed supplied by the ISP line. (Ofcom, “Choosing the best mobile, broadband and landline provider.”)

What does customer-support evidence say?
Ofcom’s 2025 customer-service report draws on its 2024 customer trackers. The measures below reflect reported experiences in 2024; they are not a forecast of how an individual customer will be treated now.
| Measure | TalkTalk | BT | Sector comparison |

| Broadband complaints completely resolved at first contact | 40% | Not stated for this measure in the cited report summary | 44% sector average |
| Broadband customers with a reason to complain in 2024 | Not stated for this measure in the cited report summary | 20% | 23% sector average |
| Broadband customers satisfied with speed | 75% | Not stated for this measure in the cited report summary | TalkTalk customers were less likely than average to report satisfaction |

In a separate measure, Ofcom’s report on Q1 2026 complaints identified TalkTalk as the most complained-about fixed-broadband provider for that quarter. Ofcom compares complaints received per 100,000 customers. This regulator measure is not the same as a customer survey: neither measure captures every service issue or establishes what a particular household will experience. (Ofcom, complaints report updated 30 July 2026; Q1 2026 data.)

How to choose between BT and TalkTalk
- Check your exact address with both providers. Compare the technologies and tiers actually available, not just the providers’ national or headline package lists.
- Match the speeds you need. Compare the address-specific estimate and guaranteed minimum, plus upload speed where it is stated. Do not equate an advertised maximum with a guarantee.
- Compare the full scheduled cost. Include each monthly price rise shown for the offer, the complete contract term, any setup or installation charge, and paid extras. Make sure you are comparing offers with the same term and similar features.
- Use service evidence in context. Ofcom’s survey results and complaints-per-customer data can inform your choice, but they cover different periods and measures and are not guarantees about future support or reliability.
- If you already have TalkTalk, check your contract before switching. Early termination charges may apply if you leave before the minimum term ends. The announced BT deal does not itself require you to change provider or take action.
